This is not an amp you have probably seen too often. It’s the baby stereo amp from Boulder, the 1161. The 1160 is it’s bigger Brother and the 2160/3060 it’s big Brother.

The 1161 puts out 200 watts/channel in 8 ohms and it is ballsy! The size and weight are very manageable and compact.

For someone wanting the new Boulder sound in a small, manageable package, this 1161 is highly recommended.

MSRP: $22k

Mike...what's the retail $$$. Boulder has always intrigued me ,for some reason.

Oops...saw the msrp you had listed...sorrry.

Mike, how does this amp's sound compare with other SS offerings, e.g., MSB S500, Luxman M-900u, Gryphon Essence?

In the $20k space, it’s the amp I would buy. It has all the attributes of the 2160 with a little less power in a manageable package.

The matching preamp is gorgeous. The front machining is based on the topography of Flagstaff Mountain here in Boulder...

Ah! I didn’t know. Have you toured their factory too?

Yes, I've passed by their shop on the way to my office for years. Finally made time to stop by a month ago. Steve and Logan were wonderful hosts. They have a very impressive operation, and the entire place is spotless and incredibly organized, as one might predict...

The 1161 is on the top of my list, if I get the chance to reward myself. Small package, balanced inputs, power button on the front, more power than my speakers need. I have a very small room, and a larger Class A would probably be hotter than I should be using. The 15-20 watt DIY amps sound great, but my 45 watt kit EL34 amp puts something energy to the system that’s missing at lower wattages.
