B&W 802D4’s arrive

Quick review of the new 802 D4:

- after break in, gone is the top down presentation of the D3. MUCH more of a balanced approach. Not sure if it’s the retuning of the crossover or the longer tweeter tube or both….but MUCH more to my liking now. No bite.
- bass is greatly improved, tighter and far far far more impact.
- the cabinet seems bigger, fatter, but I haven’t compared to an 802D3
- the speaker is very very well balanced top to bottom. Neutral, balanced, but extremely musical.
- midrange is very good, big and palatable.
- they work superbly with Nordost, which frankly, would have been my opposite guess, thought it might be too much of a good thing, but it’s truly not.
- the better the electronics and cables, the better they perform.

Your characterization of the 802-D3s was what I recall from some years ago at a dealer with a sub-optimal setup. I wanted to buy but couldn't based on what I heard. The new ones sound promising.

Thanks, Mike.

For the 802 D4's, have you found they are best with solid state or tube amplification? Or is the answer..."it depends"?

It depends. For me, Solid State. More slam and control.
