Also other German magazines have reviewed them very favorably, such as Stereoplay.

At some point I thought this might also be a potential replacement for the S3, should I at some point choose change.

Anyone seriously interested in horn loudspeakers should do some research on the advantages of square vs. round tractrix profiles. There is a reason why Avantgarde dedicates so much guidance in their owner's manual pertaining to positioning and even makes available special software for further assistance with setup.

In June/ July edition of French Magazine Haute Fidelite Uno XD had better test score than Magico S1 mk2 and Focal Sopra 2.0.

We had these in the store for a while, and showed them at THE Show Newport this year. They are indeed incredible speakers, and not only with tube amps!
Good, Class A-biased solid state shines on it as well!
And the Avantgarde software to tweak and adjust the bass modules is an endless source of fun

Re: Avantgarde Uno XD Review (97/100)

Could any members post their experience of the Uno XD vs Duo XD? it used to be the Duo was a clear cut winner due to the bigger horn /lower crossover point and hence much better integration. Now with XD, I wonder if that negative has disappeared.

Very room dependent. Smaller room, go Uno XD. Something like 14 x 20. Anything bigger and the Duo XD's are the way to go. Very similar sound, but the Duo's do play bigger and seem to integrate better at the 150hz range vs the 290hz range. But again, we are talking about a 435i vs M4 if you know what I mean. Both are excellent. Honestly, the Uno XD's are properly the better match for my room, but the Duo Mezzo XD's are so damn good, I just had to make them work - and I think I have.

Thanks gents - I owned Solos a long time ago and fondly remember the sound.

I really think the XD tech is a huge leap vs prior versions, so am interested as a "you're done" speaker.

I, too, am interested in these speakers. I see they are 107db, so what Amps do folks typically use to drive them ? Will low power SET work ? Can they be placed closer to the front wall and still have great imaging and depth ?

18ohm, 107db. Any amp will work. I have a 45 SET that puts out a whopping 0.8 watts/channel and it drives them fine. Most common pairing is a 300b SET amp (8 watts). That's my go to amp. Mine is the Triode TRX-M300's. According to the meters, I rarely get to 1 watt on the amps.

Geez, sign me up for more posts in this thread. The thought of buying the Uno XD has really messed with my mind in the last 3+ months. Ever since hearing Mike's Duo, I wake up occasionally in a sweat.

Do I stay married to this polite, educated, really impressive woman with unbelievable test results? After all, the audio rags love it.

Or do I file for a divorce and follow my heart. My crush. The one path that gives me goosebumps, that sends an immediate shockwave to me and gives me nervous anticipation, like that first date with the woman of your dreams? I am torn and it eats away at me every day. I don't know if I will ever be happy. Forever tortured.

any idea why AG has >10 watts on their website?

i can't imagine more than a watt or two in normal listening rooms, especially since there is active bass.

Thanks much Mike. How hard is to place it in the room ? Closer to the wall is fine or do they need more room to breathe ? Driving a speaker with a watt of SET has always been on my radar for a long long time

Devg - if you're in the U.S., you must come by and hear the Avantgarde Duo Mezzo XD's and Avantgarde Zero XD TA's. The Avantgarde's are a controlled directivity speaker, and as such, are much less susceptible to room anomalies and room challenges. They do however still need to be out from the front wall about 2-3 feet measured from the wall to the back of the speaker to sound their best. However, they can go a little closer to the wall without too much issue since they are not ported on the back. I have my Zero XD's quite close to the front wall (2 feet) and they sounded wonderful. My Duo Mezzo XD's are measuring 60 1/8 inch from the back of the speaker to the front wall. I have a rather long room (25 feet), so I have some play with moving the speakers into the room a bit.

I really hope you can come for a visit. As Justin pointed out above, it's not an experience you will soon forget.

I will say this about the Avantgarde's: they start out on the precipice between heaven and hell. If you take them home and stick bright cables, bright amps and a bright source on them, you will not be happy. But if you go with a SET amp (preferably 300b), a nice tube preamp, some smooth cables (I love Siltech on AG), than you will be in heaven. I find the ones who struggle are those that try to put a square peg into a round hole: putting AG's in a very revealing system. They are so revealing at the outset...you need to dial that back a little. Horns have so much detail and resolution and are so revealing, you end up focusing on two things: noise floor and smoothing things out. The Denali really took care of the noise floor in my system and the Siltech/Triode 300b amps really took care of "smoothing things out".

I said before, if you truly want to know what something sounds like, bring it over to my place. AG's are like a giant spotlight or magnifying glass on sources, cables, amps, etc.

The XD customization also allows for easier integration to the front wall. I recommend starting with my Duo Mezzo XD settings (which I've provided on a couple of threads) and tweaking from there. I put my Duo Mezzo XD settings into the Zero TA's and was surprised at how much it helped.

I will also suggest, a professional setup by Jim Smith is strongly recommended. Jim has set up hundreds of pairs of AG's and he is phenomenal.

Beauties... Look even nicer than what's on the AG site.
Is it just my monitor, or do the horns, the Vivids AND the blue tape all match?

Bet this would sound extra special on them:

Meant to ask what amps. How do the VAC compare to your Triodes?

    Avantgarde Uno XD Review (97/100)

Thanks guys. Yes, the blue on the AG’s and Vivid’s is very close. The blue tape is quite a bit lighter. I worked on the AG’s until about 7pm last night and got them dialed in. I ran two long USB Cables from the back of the speakers to the laptop and then using the room measurements, dialed in the AG speakers bass to the room.

I’m going to try the VAC amps on them today. I was using the Gryphon Diablo 120 at first. Believe it or not, with KT150’s, the VAC amps have a SET like sound.

Magico M3’s will be shown with either the Pass X350.8 or VAC Signature 200iQ monos combined with the new Lampizator Pacific and the Avantgarde Uno XD’s will be shown with Lampizator 211 amps and Lampizator Golden Atlantic.

I would love to be using my ARC preamps, but the Lampizator’s all have built in volume control.

When you say "room measurements" what do you mean? H-W-L dimensions or microphone measurements from a 3rd party program?

    Thanks

Microphone. Pink noise. Get an idea of how the speaker is interacting with the room and that gives me a starting point.

For a quick and dirty, I use Spectrum Analyzer on my phone:

    (Top one)

For more serious calibration, I like the Dayton Audio Microphone System.

For a quick and dirty, Tidal has pink noise tracks.

I have pink noise on my Stereophile, RR/XLO, and Ayre IBE test discs, but never realized something was to be learned from graphing the noise. One last question (unless your reply raises more ...) -- are you using the phone's microphone with that Spectrum app or a plug-in mic?

    Thanks

Both are excellent. Honestly, the Uno XD's are properly the better match for my room, but the Duo Mezzo XD's are so damn good, I just had to make them work - and I think I have.

Mike, your advise were then spot-on but regretfully, I had the Devialet & Raidho D3.1. After 3 years, I've decided to give myself another go at re-building the entire retirement system, not without a lot of story telling to my wife. Long story short, I got my way (maybe of my age perhaps?). The Uno XD Piano Edition will be delivered next month and so are the rest except the Luxman D-10x in August. The speakers are specifically configured to my room measurement in Avantgarde factory so that only minor adjustment, if necessary will be done upon delivery. Asked for this (and provided room exact measurement - Width, Height & Length) for a unbox, plus & play. Still, was told minor adjustment may still be needed due to placement. Oh well. I am looking forward to enjoying this new system upon retiring from the workforce - truly this time. 30th June, my last day at work. Wow! How time flies! Cheers.

    Good choice Atvinyl.

I had 2002 vintage Unos until last year. Bought following their choice by Stereophile as their Joint Speaker of the Year. Unos have been upgraded a number of times since then so the latest version should be amazing. I think they are probably the best value speaker in the AG range.

I’m eagerly awaiting delivery of my new Duo XDs to replace the 2006 ones I bought last year and am currently enjoying. I nearly went for the Kalahari Desert but decided on another colour in the end – probably to be regretted, but I hope not!

I’m also concerned that the DSP offered by AG seems pretty poorly thought out. As far as I can see, all adjustments are made with only ones ears as judge to whether you’ve got it right. A few people may be able to do that, but I’m sure I can’t.

I’d have preferred to be offered a system similar to Martin Logan and others who include a kit comprising a calibrated microphone, tripod, cables and software so one can use a PC to actually see on your screen the response curve before and after running the DSP. Then one could be reasonably sure that the listener is hearing a flat curve and not one that has peaks and dips resulting from room acoustics and positioning. But I’ll reserve judgement until the Duos arrive and I’ve run them in and played around with the adjustment settings.

Have others here with XD Avantgardes found difficulty in making these adjustments and how much faith do you have in believing them to be as accurate as they could be? Thanks

    Hi Peter,
I don't really know much about the needed adjustments. However, understanding/advise was to let the speakers "run-in" for a period of time before doing the adjustments. I guess this will need to be done by the dealer as for sure, I don't really know how to do so. Meanwhile, all settings are at null except for the bass at "7". So far, so good in my little room. Meanwhile, I cant fault anything at all and am running in/enjoying the music. Having own a G2 Mezzo, I can safely say Avantgarde are great speakers to enjoy.
    Cheers!

Meanwhile, I cant fault anything at all and am running in/enjoying the music. Having own a G2 Mezzo, I can safely say Avantgarde are great speakers to enjoy.
    Cheers!
you set your subwoofer at 7 DB only? wow that's really low. I guess I like a more solid body of the bass. I tend to listen from 9 DB all the way to 15 DB, with 12-13 DB feeling like the most common for recordings. I tend to listen to audiophile reissues of jazz like the Blue Note 80 or Tone Poet series, or MMJ, and I think the bass response tends to be weak. Pop albums on the other hand can be overwhelming with bass and then I will dial it down a lot.

My old Duos (and before that Unos) thankfully have only 2 adjustments - crossover frequency and bass level. Oh yes, there's also a very low cut off filter switch 20, 25 or 30Hz.

The crossover setting that's recommended in the User Guide is usually too high so there seems conflict between mid and bass. Others who have adjusted down have also found a cleaner sound.

The prospect of multi adjustments doesn’t fill me with joy! With “DSP” advertised by AG, I’m expecting to be disappointed if it’s still down to my ears as to how to make sensible adjustments. It’s like offering tone controls or “graphic equaliser” in a preamp – all too haphazard and not DSP as I understand it. I’ll be looking for a response curve on a PC screen to confirm that I’m on the right track.

I’m interested to learn that you adjust the bass amp settings to suit the music – or at least recording. Fortunately I can do much of this sort of tuning with the IR remote for my amplifier. Also I can cut the deep bass late at night when my neighbours may be disturbed within its settings.

I’m pleased to hear that you’re enjoying your Unos. As you say, Avantgarde seems to have it right if you want excitement and realism in your music. So many systems seem to be obsessed with “accuracy” at the cost of enjoyment. Peter

    Hi Peter,
I did not make the adjustment ... it came preset that way - out of the box. However, like the dealer says, they will come over in mid to end August ti help make the adjustment that befits my small room. So far, so good as there music does not seem to lack anything. Hope this clarifies.
    Cheers

Hi, did anyone upgrade the jumper cable to another brand? What plugs do you use on the jumpers' ends?

I did. I used Shunyata Sigma jumpers. I went spade to spade because my speaker cables were bananas.

Hi I presume your speaker cables are the Shunyata Sigma as well?
