    Tesla Model Y Test Drive

My wife is in the market for a new SUV, so we decided to see what all the fuss was about. You know, that Tesla fuss…

The process for booking a test drive was quite easy. Go to the website, book a day and time and model and voila….show up 15 minutes before your scheduled time oh and watch about 5 videos on how to drive and operate the car because there won’t be a sales person coming with you….and it has nothing to do with Covid.

One little wrinkle….there was no scheduled times for the day of, so a simple phone call to Tesla and young fellow on the phone was very happy to provide a list of times for that day. I did find it funny that he insisted we should order the car with him right there, on the phone, at that minute prior to test driving the car. Silly boy. But I will say, I do like the no haggle, clean way of actually purchasing a Tesla. Literally 3 or 4 options at most and that’s it.

We arrived 15 minutes prior to our scheduled appointment. The Tesla store near our house was quite busy with other interested customers asking questions. The salesman was a little distracted, but handed us a keycard, gave us a few tips and we were on our way.

The first thing you notice is that there is about a dozen test cars in the lot, intermingled with customer cars getting a free charge and no easy way to distinguish between the one you’re supposed to drive and all the rest. We haphazardly went along running the key card near the drivers side door slot before one finally opened.

Our demo car was charging, so we removed the charger, put it back on it’s little holder. We hopped in and as instructed, placed the little credit card between the cup holders and the center arm rest.

Just then, things came to life. We sat there for 10 minutes figuring out all the options on the screen. Nothing overly complicated for myself, but adjusting your mirrors, climate control, etc. is a multi step process. We weren’t quite sure what a lot of the options did and I was thinking at that moment, it sure would have been nice to have the sales person along. Oh well….we have four University degrees between the two of us, we should be able to figure it out. If not, we have a 13 and 16 year old who can pretty much do anything with tech.

I admired the interior and felt it was “adequate”, maybe a little cheap feeling for a car costing nearly $65,000, of course without all the extras like the charging station. But it was just a test drive. We did not inspect the Model S or X, but hope the interior would be a step up considering both are $100K vehicles. I admired how the vehicle from the outside had a bit of an odd, not so appealing egg shape, but from inside, it was quite nice. I really liked the gigantic sunroof/sky roof/whatever they call it. This is a car designed from the inside out. Meaning, it’s appeal was being in the car, not necessarily from the exterior.

The heart of the Tesla is it’s giant screen in the middle. It’s where you can make all the necessary climate control adjustments, adjust your mirrors, tune the radio, adjust even the vents for the cold air, set your sat nav, find out your battery life and various other things some of which are good and some which are stupid….more on that later.

We got the seat adjusted, mirrors adjusted, jokingly yelled out to Siri (which brought a back seat of laughter from the kids) and searched around for how to make the damn thing go. Ah, where the windshield wiper would normally be, there was R/N/D and the little push button on the side was P. Got it. Oh, and speaking of windshield wipers….yeah, those are a few touches deep on the screen. Odd. Pulled down on the lever and we were in drive and off to the races.

I thought the lack of an engine roar would bother me, but it really didn’t. I appreciated the silence. The car felt solid and very quick even just pulling out of the parking lot and onto the main street. We eventually found a strip of road and really got to test out this machine. This was the long range version, not the performance version, but let me tell you, it was lacking for nothing. The torque from an EV, even one with as modest spec as this one is VERY impressive. It’s like be thrust into space. The standard combustion engine has great torque too, but this is just different and quite hard to explain. There is no lag whatsoever….it’s just hold on and launch!

Handling of the vehicle was good, not midengine sports car good, but good for a four door saloon car/suv. Ride comfort was very good, not Mercedes S class good, but very good none the less.

We pulled over, played a little more with the settings on the giant screen, switched drivers and off we went again. I found my wife zipping along at 80mph in a 35mph zone and had to gently say “dear, this is a 35mph zone and you’re doing 80!” She slowed down and smiled. “It’s quite zippy!” Yes it is and it’s easy to lose track of the speed limit because of the seamless never ending glorious torque that this vehicle has.

We tried parking it in some spots, navigating some roundabouts and trying a variety of maneuvers. It passed with flying colors.

Were we ready to head back and place our order? Well….no.

It’s because of the one peddle driving, among other things. What is the one peddle driving? Take your foot off the gas and the car starts to brake firmly. Tesla calls this “regenerative braking”. Basically, you’re using the cars momentum to power up the batteries while slowing down the vehicle.

So what’s the problem? It did take a little to get used to and perhaps with a few weeks of driving it you get really get it down, but frankly, it made us all quite sick. Nauseous. Car sick if you will.

We pulled over, called the salesman and asked how we turn this damn thing off (it was grayed out on the screen). He explained that Tesla had removed it for all cars a few months ago. A search on the internet found many Tesla owners complaining about it (and making their families car sick) and noting that Tesla had quietly “turned it off”. Quite stupid if you ask me.

I’ve never felt so ill driving a car as I did with the Tesla. After an hour, I couldn’t wait to get it back. I would happily give up 50 or 100 miles of extra range (it’s probably more like 20), just not to have this herky jerky driving. It’s like having your left foot on the brake and right foot on the accelerator at the same time, all the time.

We got the car back to the Tesla store and sat in the car to talk about it. The kids of course loved the technology, loved that you could play video games in your car. But for the two people who could actually afford the car and would likely even consider the $100K X or S models, there were some serious deal breakers.

For me, it was the one pedal driving. It really made us sick not only as a passenger but for me, especially as a driver.

For my wife, there was a few more things. She wanted buttons. My wife is not a technology person. Pairing her Apple Watch to her phone is quite simply far beyond her technological abilities or patience. But she has many other skills, especially relating to the health care field. Her ability to understand hundreds of medications, the human body and such tends to make me glaze over.

But she wanted buttons. Hard physical buttons. She doesn’t even use cruise control. This is how much technology she doesn’t want in her car. This business of going into screens and clicking here and back over there and such was far beyond what she wanted in a car. Even adjusting where the air vents blow on you is a task in searching through screens.

But then there is what I would call “silliness”. When a 50 year old medical professional and Mother is considering a new car, I can assure you, farting noises, fart bags, fart horns and other fart related items, burping horns, burping noise and other such stupidity are a complete a utter turnoff for them.

The silliness of video games and other such things as well are a complete turn off. If Tesla is trying to appeal to the 9 year old (who can’t drive) with this stupidity, I can assure you, they succeeded. But if they are trying to be a serious car company and to be taken seriously, they would be well advised to keep the silliness hidden unless someone enters a code to enable them. And why any self respecting middle aged professional man or woman would do that, is beyond me. Perhaps to impress their 9 year old son or grandson. That’s it.

We plugged back in the car, locked it, returned the key card to the salesman and chatted for a while. We had several discussions about the single peddle driving and the ridiculous new “yoke”. It certainly does not feel right or good, but to be fair, we did not get a chance to drive a car with it.

There is no doubt about the appeal of electric vehicles and we will certainly keep an eye on what other manufacturers are doing as well. Most, admittedly, are playing catch up and are years behind Tesla. Tesla obviously is going in their own direction and carving out their own path. Good for them! It’s obviously been very successful. But for many reasons, I don’t think my wife and I will be a customer of theirs any time soon.

Earlier in the day, we test drove a Porsche Macan. Base model 2021. This one was modestly configured and was about the same price as the Tesla Model Y. My takeaway from that test drive was that it was a proper SPORT utility vehicle from a proper sports car company that was well made, extremely fun to drive and didn’t have any stupid one peddle driving nor farting horns. It had excellent acceleration, excellent braking, fantastic steering and buttons galore to appease my wife. The 2022 is reportedly going to be the last combustion engine Macan. After that, it will be an electric version for Porsche, which had better get their range ratings up or Tesla will lap them all again.

The future is EV’s. But today’s buyer needs to do some hard comparisons to really find if they are ready for a new way of driving. For us, we will wait a little bit longer.

    Tesla Model Y Test Drive

Macan 2021 flight deck like button galore will be the last. Even 2022 internal combustion engines won’t see that. I’m sure keeping my 2018 turbo for as long as it is operational.

Tesla stock is entertaining me. Their products? Not so much. It is not about 0-60 all the time.

There will be so many choices in the coming years that Tesla will be lost among the others... But the speculative stock keeps on delivering in the mean time... Just have to keep your eyes on it.

Porsche recently announced that the next generation of its Macan crossover will go full electric. The Porsche Macan EV will be based on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) platform that is being co-developed with Audi. It will have the same 800-volt tech as the next Taycan and will probably share its electric motors and battery packs too. Porsche plans to start production of the Macan EV in 2022.

See above, I mentioned that in my review. It’s the future.

Sometimes I wonder if it’s better to wait, but then I think it’ll be awesome to get the Tesla now for example. I would love a real world 400-500 mile range but wonder if that’s too optimistic.

It seems like the auto industry is at a bit of a crossroads right now, chip shortages and a lack of vehicles on the lots.

Joe, it’s an incredible car. So advanced in so many ways. I’m sure I could get used to the regenerative braking, but for my anti-tech wife, it was a nightmare. It’s clearly the future and the torque is intoxicating. We will have an EV I’m sure soon.

Joe, there will be no shortages of EV cars just like there will be no shortages of audio gear. One would be wise to exercise a bit of patience unless there is a pressing need. I personally lease all my cars for that reason. In and out before the warranty expires and there is always a new and exciting model waiting for me just as the lease runs out....

If you are getting a Tesla just because you want a Tesla, go out and keep test driving it and see after how many times you either really want it or you will wait for something even more exciting. Isn't that what this thread about in a nutshell?

Perhaps a year or even longer. I don’t follow EV progress from various manufacturers closely. That was a quote from an article.

Re: Tesla Model Y Test Drive

Thanks for the review Mike. I test drove a Tesla 3 Long Range version last May. I actually liked it more than I thought I would. Plenty of pep, reasonably good driving dynamics, comfortable seats and ok range. I was not a fan of the “cheapish” plastic interior pieces and, to some degree, dealing with the LCD screen for everything as some simple functions should not take multiple actions on the screen.

I will eventually get an EV. If I were getting one now, I would lease. This segment of the auto industry will go through dramatic evolution over the next few years.

Get the Porsche and don't look back Mikey , my brother got one for his wife , she loves it ..

Get her to test drive a Macan - preferably S or better - she will love it; even the base models are quick and handle very well..........I have a 2017 Macan Turbo with PSAM (Air Suspension), and prob will never let it go, especially if they go all electric in the future. Fantastic solid, fast, luxurious car. Best car I have every owned, and I have driven a bunch of them in my 50 years of driving. You can pick up CPOs for approximately the same price as the Tesla.

Re: Tesla Model Y Test Drive

Good write up on the test drive Mike. I actually love the one peddle driving. That took me about ten minutes to get use it. Now, I don't think I could drive without it. As far as no nobs. I don't miss those either. If I want the air condition or heat on or off while I'm driving. I just use the voice command with a push of the right button on the steering wheel and give a command. You can control most functions using the voice command this way. If I'm parked I just set things up on the screen and your done. My first turn off on the model three was the nose of the car. I just did not like the looks. But, after six months. I don't give it a thought. For me the car has grown on me more over time. I'll drive 20 mile to a store just to pick up a single item like hot dog buns just so I can listen to my music in a quiet car. It is a real pleasure. If I'm driving and see a two or three second gap to enter a lane I know I can gain at least 30 or 40 miles per hours. Plus, I never think about a gas station except to notice the price of gas. Everyone has their own interest or likes in cars and the driving experience. But, I'll never go back to a gas car again.

Also, my first drive in a electric car was when I picked up my model 3 February 11th this year.

Darrell - I think you’re right. I felt that if I could have the car for a little while longer, I may get the hang of it. It’s certainly going to be a feature in EV’s in the future since it just makes sense as to why that function is the way it is. So, we better learn how to use it!

And the benefit of not having to worry about burning gas for that small trip is sure nice.

It’s definitely the future. A torque fun filled future!

Re: Tesla Model Y Test Drive

My wife is on her second Tesla (Model 3 and Model Y) and I just reserved my third Model S. Like any piece of audio equipment, personal preferences make a big difference. You did a smart thing by driving before buying to find out how you would react to the car's features. I did the same with the Model S. I immediately sold my Ferrari and never looked back. The car is a combination of enthusiast's sleeper supercar and practical family sedan. I've never had any service issue on any of the cars, only tire replacements. Before I retired I had a nasty commute. The regenerative braking was a godsend. I can't live without it now. As they say, YMMV. Best of luck with whatever choice you make. There are no bad choices.

Model S over a Ferrari , interesting choice

I know more than a few who go back to gas , one in particular did similar with his M-Car for a model S and went back to gas after his lease was up, said it bored him to death, but he does do track events and an occasional auto -X .

Funniest story was a cross country trip in a model S , apparently running the heat shortens battery life by 50- 70% , i can see heavy city commuting over short distances as being ideal for sure , most i know who really like Tesla’s and are on their 2 or 3 rd buy for the self driving feature , apparently nothing like sitting back and watching traffic when commuting to and from the office ..!

Options are great and I'm sure many will have one sooner or later its the forced mandatory EV Agenda is the problem IMO, as to gas prices, 5.00 + a gallon will speed this along nicely, now imagine what the Electrical charge rate is gonna be in the future for electric cars ..!

    Yep ..!

We went back to gas, not because of any performance short comings of our model S p100D. , it was the range ( actual range at highway speeds) and charging locations on roads other than interstates.

A few years ago my area experienced a power outage for 4.5 days after a nasty ice storm that damaged many power lines.... I was able to get in my car, start it and go over a few towns over to get some food and necessities. Thank god for natural gas stove and two gas fireplaces in the house or would have been frozen in the middle of the winter. Slept in a jacket at night... One can have a few jugs of gasoline in the garage (with fuel stabilizer for longer storage than one season) but not sure what I would do with an EV in that situation...

We’ve had a couple of power failures for several days over my lifetime here. I wonder if our fairly local Superchargers maintain power or not during future outages.

I remember with Hurricane Mathew, we had NO power for 6 days, then we got it for 3 hours before the pad mounted transformer 3 houses down which was flooded in the storm surge finally died after the power was restored., I can just see attempting to charge an EV with the power going off and on for days would be a total bummer. I do know, once we were allowed back home by the authorities, our LP Weber came in handy as did our Honda 3000 generator and a couples of coolers full of ice. But the humidity was horrid. The next year we put a whole house 18kw Generator in along with 500 gals of LP buried.

That's correct around here. But Telsa has been installing Powerpacks at some charging stations.

But it would be freaking nuts to get this message from Tesla about a power outage in your area, like this.

Tesla sends in-car warning to owners about upcoming power outage, recommends full charge - Electrek

I had a Generac natural gas 17KW or 18KW, in my previous house. I’m thinking it was a Honda engine inside, don’t recall. I should look into installing one again.

I don’t live in California but it seems very problematic in some areas with the outages..

I had to go to my car to see if that option is in my model 3 menu screen. I'm not sure what software version that is on. But, my screen just allows "hold" or "roll" for braking. There has been at least five over the air updates since I bought the model 3. This is one of the big advantages of Tesla. You don't have the same car you bought six months later. It's similar to a iphone. It does the same job. But, there are constant updates and add on options.

The EQS is amazing and maybe in 10 years it will be for me. I have a ‘21 Porsche Cayman GT4 as my daily driver and a ‘21 Dodge Ram 1500 limited for when we need to pull the trailer or use it for work. I have a deposit down on a C8 Z06 for over a year now. I’ll wait for the reveal on October 26th, check it out and then decide to get the C8 Z06 or a 911 992 GT3 Touring. I love cars. I read and watch everything I can get my hands on. It’s a problem!

But this is an SUV for my wife. I’ve told her to just get a car, but a lot of women like to sit up high. So far, admittedly being very very biased, I think the ‘22 Macan GTS is the way to go. 434 BHP. Amazing sport like handling and braking. And lots of buttons! LOL. Hey, she makes good money, she can afford it. Tesla Model Y Test Drive. Come to think of it, what am I still doing working? Tesla Model Y Test Drive

Never having driven a one pedal Tesla, I am curious what the driver does if an emergency happens and you need to 'slam' on the brakes.

Definitely the benefit side! Still trying to wrap my head around the incredible tech. The sheer lack of technology is one of the most appealing features of my GT4. Not a thing on the steering wheel. Hell, it doesn’t even have memory seating or proper door handles. LOL.

It has a conventional brake, aka two pedals, and you can brake anytime. Because of regeneration and software control, many hardly use the actual brake pedal.

The brake peddle is still there. I was taught 100 years ago or so when I started driving to feather the throttle and learn how to coast a lot. The regenerative braking turns that upside down a little. But I think one could get used to it.

But as I dig more into the Tesla model, I just don’t think it’s for my wife. Concerns about break downs and getting just any place to work on it, resale complications, etc. I need to do more research into selling a Tesla. I get the feeling you won’t be just walking into the BMW dealership and handing them over the keys and driving away in a new 5 series. But I could be wrong.

On the bright side, it appears they have very good resale value at the moment. A bit odd that there are a bunch of states that prohibit selling of Tesla’s. Must be the oil industry lobbyists hard at work.

Anyway, it’s definitely a new and exciting market. I do feel as others have pointed out, that the rest of the industry will catch up and surpass Tesla in the not too distant future. But for now, they are lapping the rest.

Because of the outrageous used market, many people including Tesla owners have sold or traded in their cars for almost as much or more in some cases than they paid. I think the market will dictate pricing as always. I bet you’ll find Tesla holding their value a little better than your average car.

You’re right Joe and with new models taking longer to build, the resale will continue to rise.

The one area where Tesla has a major advantage is their Supercharger charging network. If you only drive locally and do not travel this is not as significant, but otherwise it is a big benefit.

Currently I believe that the Tesla Supercharger network only works on Tesla's. This is the huge advantage Tesla has and yes they are years ahead of other Manufacturers.
Rivian did state that they also plan on developing a similar network for their vehicles.
Universal networks like Chargepoint and Electrify America show a large network, but lack capacity and fast charging capability in many areas.
