Re: Tesla Model Y Test Drive
Just want to say…I love talking about cars. Almost as much as audio. Not trying to piss anyone off. It’s nothing personal. I have friends who love their Tesla’s.
I love anything with four wheels (or two) and a motor or battery pack thingy.
I think it all comes down to how you envision your car and how you will use it.
And yes, old habits die hard too. From posters on your wall of the Countach or a 308 or 911 when you’re a kid to spending your entire life idolizing Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche and others to now switch to a big golf cart with a roof and a farting noise generator is hard for an old fart (no pun intended) like me.My Systems: http://www.audioshark.org/showthread...481#post158481

Re: Tesla Model Y Test Drive
No switching for me ...
its like class D and digital, i can choose to have or not , EV’s are not for me too many piston and cam swaps over the years to get into a one note Hummer..
But when” they” drive gas up to 10.00 a gal most will end up with one and then cry blood when charging rates go up to compensate for lost gas sales and taxes.. Yep 1K + a month to charge a family of EV’s May look reasonable to those born into the stupidity of it all ...!

Re: Tesla Model Y Test Drive
Under my normal driving conditions which is a mixture of highway and limited traffic lights 500 is normal.
Also my brother and his wife have driven in from Colorado a few times in the last year in their Audi A7 and their S7. The range for both of those is over 500 too. Many vehicles with at least a 19 gallon tank can get 500.Jim

Re: Tesla Model Y Test Drive
I guess a big tank is good for gas cars but with electric you have a “full tank” when you wake up every morning so big range is not as important IMHO. How many people are driving over 300-400 miles a day? Basically nobody unless you’re on a trip. Then how many people on a trip are driving more than 600-800 miles a day? Even much fewer. So if you can’t stop once for a charge then gas is definitely best for you. I prefer never having to go to gas stations. Waste of time.

Re: Tesla Model Y Test Drive
My Jeep Grand Cherokee can supposedly do over 600. I've never done over 500 without stopping for a break anyways.
The 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee has a fuel efficiency of 19 miles per gallon in the city and 26 miles per gallon on the highway when equipped with its 3.6-liter V-6 engine. This vehicle's fuel tank has room for 24.6 gallons so that you can have a maximum driving range of approximately 639 miles.

Re: Tesla Model Y Test Drive
"This vehicle's fuel tank has room for 24.6 gallons so that you can have a maximum driving range of approximately 639 miles." Locally that works out to $98.15 at my nearest gas station.
I have just over 3100 miles on my model 3 in the six month since purchase. With 1000 mile of free charging at a Tesla super charger. That leaves 2100 miles I charge at home. Looking at my last years electric bill from February-August compared to this year. I figure my 2100 miles has cost me around $75.00. Just a close guess. But, pretty close I think. So, 639 miles for $98.00 or 2100 miles for around $75.00. I guess I don't quite get you point?!Speakers: Magico S3 (23')

Re: Tesla Model Y Test Drive
All the arguments aside, if Tesla can somehow pull itself together and stop rolling out cheap looking and feeling interiors, they might attract more people. I’ve gotten in a few Tesla and every time I couldn’t wait to get out. To be fair, I also thought Maserati Gibli interior is terrible too when I had it for merely 2 months (Tesla is worse though).
BTW what’s so great about one screen thing? It’s a car, easy access to utilities trounces everything else. You as a driver don’t want to hop a few times just to change your suspension mode. One touch should be the name of the game. Like below.

Re: Tesla Model Y Test Drive
My post was about range not economy. 1000 promotional miles from Tesla has little to do with the topic. There were/are also government Tax Credits that can also enter the conversation then.
It does cost cheaper to run an EV, at least with the average KWh being at approximately 13 cents ($0.13) and gasoline prices being around $3.40 average for regular.
"What is the cost to charge a Tesla Model 3?
The Standard Range Model 3 comes with a 50 kWh battery and 263 miles of range. Both the Long Range and Performance Model 3s come with an 82 kWh battery. The Long Range taps out at 353 miles of range, while the Performance model has 315 miles of range.
If you purchase the 2021 Standard Range Model 3, you can expect to pay about $7.65 to fully charge the battery. That brings the cost per mile to about $0.03, or $2.91 per 100 miles.
To completely charge the 2021 Long Range and Performance models, it would cost $12.54. That’s about $0.036 per mile for the Long Range, and $0.04 for the Performance model."
My Grand Cherokee has a combined average of 21 mpg which works out to be $0.16 per mile at $3.40 for regular.
I work from home so to me it doesn't matter one way or the other....
There is no way that our grids can support everyone going EV and will need major overhauls and upgrades. There will need to be many more charging stations as well. All of that will translate into higher costs down the road. Cost of energy is also rising due to inflationary pressures and has doubled over the last few decades.
Enjoy the EV at the early stages while they really are cheaper than their gasoline predecessors.

I think the interior is great. The seats are so comfortable, better than any car I’ve been in. I like the simplicity of the design. Easy to clean too! That console is ridiculous. I understand though, old people are resistant to change especially when it involves technology.

Re: Tesla Model Y Test Drive
What makes you think the grid won’t be able to handle the charging at night? I would love to know how much capacity is freed up at night compared to the day. If the avg person is driving 45 miles a day that’s only 1hr of home charging. Even if the grid was an issue the cars could all be staggered into charging slots.

Federal tax revenues
Federal fuel taxes raised $36.4 billion in Fiscal Year 2016, with $26.1 billion raised from gasoline taxes and $10.3 billion raised from taxes on diesel and special motor fuels.
Then there’s State taxes :
California pumps out the highest state gas tax rate of 66.98 cents per gallon, followed by Illinois (59.56 cpg), Pennsylvania (58.7 cpg), and New Jersey (50.7 cpg).Jul 28, 2021

Re: Tesla Model Y Test Drive
Not insulting anyone. Common knowledge that older people are more resistant to learning new tech. Kids today are born practically with tablet in hand so something like a Tesla is more natural to them than a console with 37 (I counted) physical buttons. Times change. The point is every car manufacturer is going electric and computerized. Depending on your age you may be able to ride it out until your demise but others will be forced to adapt. Kind of like when TV channels went digital.

Re: Tesla Model Y Test Drive
You keep saying new tech. Do you really think us old farts don’t do new tech? Ever thought it’s the way Tesla is bringing new tech is what being disliked here and not the “new tech” in general?
Yes times change. Future will be dominated by EV or hydrogen. But when I do get an EV it won’t be Tesla. The only thing Tesla is ahead of other EVs is battery technology and I will wait for a proper car company to catch up on that. Note, Taycan.

Re: Tesla Model Y Test Drive
At this point in my life I look at stereo systems like I look at cars. The more you add to it...the more you take away. I control my simi simple stereo with a remote that changes input and volume and the ipad controls the library and Roon services. The Tesla for me works the same for my driving. The less in front of me the better I like it. I just want the driving and listening experience. If people get off on nobs, switches and moving things around. Go for it. I'm done playing and cleaning those things.

Re: Tesla Model Y Test Drive
“If every American switched over to an electric passenger vehicle, analysts have estimated, the United States could end up using roughly 25 percent more electricity than it does today. To handle that, utilities will likely need to build a lot of new power plants and upgrade their transmission networks.
“There’s no question that utilities can do this, but it’s not going to be trivial,” said Chris Nelder, who leads the vehicle-grid integration team at the Rocky Mountain Institute. “It takes time and money.” In a recent study, his team found that many utilities and vehicle fleet managers planning to go electric have yet to fully grapple with all the challenges involved.”

As much as I don't like the guy... Gates is spot on with this one.
According to Gates, “if we’re serious about solving climate change, and quite frankly we have to be, the first thing we should do is keep safe reactors operating.”
But “even then, just maintaining that status quo is not enough. We need more nuclear power to zero out emissions in America and to prevent a climate disaster,”

in 2013 Telsa announced this change: " The Model S' bigger 85 kwh battery pack is warranted for eight years or unlimited mileage. The smaller, 60 kilowatt-hour pack, is eight years or 125,000 miles, whichever comes first. The video never mentions the cars mileage. Kinda vague and it appears its based on pushing non manufacturing repairs which is not a bad thing. . But yep its darn expensive to repair if a person actually kept this car that long. .

Can't even put a word into a topic without someone getting their panties in a bunch and complaining... EVs and Carbon Footprint/Climate Change are all related. So what if someone adds a few words or an idea to the thread. Tell me why you want an EV if you are not worried about your carbon footprint then? Somehow the idea of letting someone wrench on a battery that can incinerate the vehicle and all the occupants in a blink of an eye (yes I know what these batteries are capable of and yes, I am that smart) does not sound appealing at all to me.
