Definitely a big boost for other EV makers, but will certainly increase wait times to charge when this happens.

Never heard of anyone getting ill from regen braking. One pedal driving is the best!

I personally found it nauseating. My family too. Many reports online of the same. Adjusting its sensitivity would be nice, but King Musk took that away.

I didn’t notice since I can’t imagine turning it down. When I drive with a full charge or it’s cold out (and regen is therefore off) it’s very weird.

I was taught to feather the throttle and coast. Regen braking for me was horrible. I guess I could get used to it if it was my only car. It will be interesting to see if other EV manufacturers adopt it. I imagine they will and I’ll have to learn to adapt.

You'll have to feather in reverse. Easy-off the throttle and she slows down.

    Tesla Model Y Test Drive

2021 Tesla Model S Plaid Review | Our Full Instrumented Test | Price, Range, 0-60 & More - YouTube

At 9:20 he has to get out of the car, sit by the side of the road because the car is making him sick (sound familiar?) and he’s just driving it normally.

Worth watching as they test the measured performance claims (spoiler alert, it fails) and they give their opinion on the yoke. The analysis of the build quality of this $130k car is also interesting.

Good to see a proper review and not a “let’s not piss off Elon” review. Reminds me of Jeremy Clarkson bringing along a car full of lawyers when he reviewed at Tesla. LOL.

Agree with him that the Model 3 is the one if you must go Tesla.

It seems like the auto industry is at a bit of a crossroads right now, chip shortages and a lack of vehicles on the lots.
I've been very happy with driving a Tesla -- since 2016. Very very few people NEED a longer range; it's mostly range anxiety. Because it's only an extra 15-20 minutes to do a Supercharger stop along the way on a long trip.

What has kept me from seriously considering any other brand is the lack of such high-speed charging. Sure, other than for a road-trip, who cares?? You just charge overnight at home. But if you want to charge on the road on a road trip, imho you need the speed and ease of access of Tesla supercharging.

I would like to try the "Yoke" steering wheel. From what I've seen it takes a short time to get the hang of it. Much like the one peddle driving. If there was a small display in front of the driver. I would switch the wheel out. Just to try it. I waited to order the the 2021 refresh model 3 in February to avoid the end of the quarter push in production and sales issues. Anyone who has worked production kind of knows. Don't buy the first versions of a new product.

1/10th of a second difference when measured the same way in which Tesla measures it. Still “by far” the fastest car they have ever tested. Edmunds even says 1/10th difference means nothing. For the sickness he’s clearly on a track and comparing his experiences with a supercar or race car. Seems like you’re angry at Tesla now because you get car sick?

It's very different driving my Model Y vs my former Model S. I miss being able to tone down the regen braking; my wife as passenger misses it a LOT.

I've been a 'one-pedal driver' with all my Teslas and now with the Y it was just a learning curve. Really have to ease off the accelerator pedal with passengers in the car; when it's just me I don't feel it.

No not at all. It just doesn’t live up to the hype IMO. I don’t get the love affair for Tesla. The interior could be better. The car is only fast in a straight line and there is just too much stupidity associated with it. A yoke? Give me a break. This isn’t nightrider and to top it all off, autonomous driving is dangerous.

EV might be the future, but until it’s at 500 mile range and 5 minute to charge up, I think it will take a while to dominate.

IMO, Hydrogen may pass it by before it gains much more traction. I will be interested to see the cyber truck, but again, I am not hopeful. I’m not about to tow a trailer to Georgia and need to recharge 8 times. A two or three day job would take a week.

If I’m retired, don’t care about the thrill of driving and just need to toil to the grocery store around the corner or take my wife to the doctors every now and then, it makes sense. But I’m not there yet.

But to each their own, nothing personal. I just don’t get it.

Not to mention a bunch of obnoxious model 3 drivers on the road. On a sub $50g and they want to race anything that moves on the road.

Only fast in a straight line? Which model are you referring to?

Model S is already 405 mile range. Further than probably any gas car. So you’re saying if it was 95 miles more then it’d be worthwhile? As far as 5 min charge, do you really think you’d often be driving 800 miles straight and can’t take a lunch break to charge? Charge 8 times to get to GA? LOL, what? Are you leaving from CA or FL?

How about having a “full tank” every morning and spending zero time sitting at the gas station? I bet if you totaled up a years worth of going to the gas station it would FAR outweigh any time you might spend at a supercharger. I’ve had my car exactly one year and went to a supercharger twice, 15 min each time. So in one year I spent a grand total of half an hour at the “gas station”. And for us in the colder climates not going to the gas station in the winter is a major plus!

Personally I’m not into autopilot or full self driving or the gimmicks either but I don’t turn them on so it doesn’t impact me at all. The yoke, I’d like to actually try it before passing judgement.

Charging will be the same as charging your cell phone at an airport , everybody hogging and queuing up ..!

Towing a trailer will kill that battery on the Tesla Truck. I’m anxiously waiting for those real numbers. A proper diesel truck can pull any trailer and you don’t have to think twice about pulling or refueling.

Did you watch the review I posted? The
plaid is lame in the corners. It looked like Dad’s old saloon car. Reminded me of the last episode of The Grand Tour. If I wanted a four door sedan, I would get a proper one, something like a BMW M5 competition.

For $130k you can get a M5 Competition or a fully loaded C8 3LT convertible and have about $40k left over. As a mid engine, it will handle beautifully. Or you can get a 911 4S (992). Or plenty of other cars that will be proper handling cars in corners without a yoke and plenty fast enough in a straight line.

Like I said, nothing personal, horses for courses. But IMO Tesla’s are seriously overhyped. I’d consider a model 3 for my daughter or something, but even then, the level of distracted driving is off the charts.

None of us know what the battery drain will be on the Cybertruck pulling max capacity. Sure, diesels are great for towing. It’s specifically made for that. Want to drive an F-350 diesel as your daily commuter?

Guess we’ll see how slow the Plaid is when driven properly on a real track.

I drive a Dodge RAM Limited and my GT4, depending on what we’re doing that day, so I guess so. And a 2500 diesel with RAM boxes, a split tail gate and bed extender with a big beautiful comfortable cab for five for long trips is great. Adjustable suspension is great for hitching up. Companies like Ford, GM and Ram own the truck market. It will be interesting to see what Tesla does. Again, to each their own. For me, it may sound silly, but the storage in the floor and RAM boxes are indispensable. I’ll be curious to see what storage the Cyber Truck has. Storage of tools and other materials like tarps and straps and so many other things is crucial. Couldn’t live without the ram boxes or something similar myself.

If I’m going for Nürburgring times, I’d sure love one of these (or even a 992 GT3):

Wisdom is wasted on the youth ...!

Those track junkies modded tesla’s are not available to you , look at curb weight on the regular version and compare to a normal track type sports car , weight is everything when tracking.

Towing , running heat in the winter all shortens battery life considerably, charging will be an issue as cars cue up, not to mention power grid issues currently in many states ...

This is nothing more than another liberal feel good fail , everyone cant be driving electric cars , its not practical and worse its unnecessary ..!

The Plaid at Nurburgring is said to be stock. So it’s a heavy boat which is going to embarrass a lot of light gas cars.

Charging won’t be an issue because it will mostly be done at night when the grid is basically idle. There will be no reason to charge at public stations during the day unless you are on long trips.

Better get used to the idea. Every major car company has announced they’re ending gas car production completely or limiting it so a small segment. States are also outlawing selling of gas cars such as NY did this week. It’s only a matter of time.

For the record if I could have any car in the world it’d still be a gas with manual trans!

Yeah, that video of the GT2 RS around Nordschleife at the 'Ring is impressive. I've watched it a number of times. The driver really knows his way around the course.

Speaking of GT2 RS, here's one I photographed in a real estate assignment back in Dec. 2019.

LOL! The only reason the car companies are doing anything is because a newcomer came in with better tech and majorly crushed their market cap! If Tesla never came around they’d still be pushing the same junk.

In 2019 the Plaid prototype did 7:13. That puts it in the top 25 of all time, only slower than the most hardcore pure super/hypercars. Not bad for a big heavy 4 door grocery getter sedan. Question is will the production car be faster 2 years later?

Tesla is no doubt here to stay, but I don’t think other car manufacturers are turning out junk. Some yes, but most, no. In my review, we compared SUV’s costing about the same as the Model Y. Frankly, the Model Y was more “junk” than the Porsche, BMW or Audi we’ve since drove.

I just hope Tesla begins to focus more on the things that matter for EV’s, like build quality, range and less on stupid stuff. I love their process for buying. Simple. Easy. Brilliant in that regard. That being said, I read constantly about Tesla owners complaining about build quality, stuff like the intermittent wipers not working properly and on and on. Taking away the gear lever for example is another idiotic idea. The automobile has been around for almost 130 years. I don’t recall ever, anyone saying “gee, I wish we didn’t have a gear lever.” Even when screens and tech became ever so prevalent in cars, I don’t recall ever hearing someone say “gee, they should put the gear lever on the screen.” I’ll be honest, at my stage in life, I have all the tech I can handle. My patience for tech is running out. I lived it 24/7 for nearly 30 years in my previous life. My laptop is from 2009 and I avoid using it as much as possible. The lack of tech is one of the reasons why I love my GT4 so much. It has nothing. Christ, not even proper door handles! Nothing on the steering wheel. Not even memory seating. No memory anything. No keyless entry. Nothing. It’s a true sports car that you have to actually DRIVE. My truck on the other hand has a giant screen and every technology known to man. Adjusting anything is a pain. It’s also so distracting and frustrating.

I do half wonder if the guys at Tesla spend half their time coming up with good ideas and the other half just sitting around thinking up stupid things like moving the gear lever to the screen, the yoke (called “the Joke” by the reviewer) and the regenerative braking (for me, I know you love it) and farting horns, dancing reindeers, video games and whoopee cushions and other silliness. I’m certain that all appeals to the TikTok/snap chat millennials, but it’s not something I would ever want or consider.

And you know what really scares me? The fact that their software updates can fundamentally change the way you interact with the car. I really don’t like that idea. King Elon calling the shots on how I drive my car? Oh no…no thanks.

My hunch is that in 10 years, the EV market or Hydrogen market will be dominated by others. Tesla may make a nice car for a certain segment of the market, but I don’t think they are a serious car company. Sorry, I just don’t. They seem like a bunch of adolescents, albeit brilliant adolescents, sitting around trying to be very different and seeing how much silliness they can add to the car before pissing everyone off. Sometimes being different is good and their focus on the core elements like charging stations, range, etc has really paid off. Other times, being so different is not good.

That being said, I’m patiently waiting for the Tesla Robin. Tesla Model Y Test Drive
