Here is what a small hobby grade LiPo (Lithium Polymer) fire looks like. This is just a radio control "toy size" fire. The EV batteries are much, much bigger and pack energy density that will incinerate the car... well, I'm sure everyone has seen a picture or two by now what happens. Not that it never happened to ICE cars and gas tank ruptures and resulting fires. One never wants to damage an EV battery! Drive safe.

Chinese Foxconn will be building a factory/factories for EV production in the US. Fisker will be one of the clients and there will be other EVs in the future. There will be a new type of vehicle code named Project Pear between both companies. Foxconn builds iPhones for Apple.

Fisker builds a hell of a better looking car than Tesla.... Foxconn will provide all the financing muscle Fisker lacked a decade before to make it happen this time.

Re: Tesla Model Y Test Drive

The one pedal thing would definitely be a deal breaker for me. The tech is cool, but it has to be usable for all drivers. Cheryal and I are thrilled with her new (well just turned one year old) Mercedes Benz GLE-450. It has every feature that Benz offers. It has the full touch panels huge screen, but most functions are also available from switches. The voice control actually works, and the screens are customizable and not that complicated. I also love the HUD, which we have on both cars. Even that is customizable. It also has a Burmester sound system (which I love)!

Yes, it would be nice to have it be fully electric; I mean a tank of gas cost almost $100 for the thing. It does have electric assist which works well. The electric motor kicks in when starting from a stop so it eliminates the jerkiness that most every car that turns the engine off when stopping at red lights, etc., has when pulling away from a red light for example. It also utilizes the electric motor when shifting through the nine gears. Super smooth.

Cheryal loves some of the little things like an overhead view when parking so she can get in the parking spot perfectly. We don't really use the automatic parallel parking even though it does work great. I think some of the little things are very cool, like when you put it in reverse the camera drops down (opens up) and the rear of the SUV actually raises a little (not sure why).

Their distance maintenance system, automatic lane change, steering assist (Mercedes does not call it auto drive like Tesla does), etc., all work fantastic. It is scary the tech they put into cars now.... but most important... the sound system is AMAZING!

Re: Tesla Model Y Test Drive

Congrats to you and Cheryl on the GLE-450. That’s a great looking SUV! We test drove the Tesla, MB, BMW, Audi, etc. before deciding on the Macan Turbo for my wife. The MB was certainly one of our favorites too. My interest in an EV diminished greatly after our Tesla experience. I talk to people all the time who drive to the store in their Tesla from say Georgia and my God, it takes forever with all the waiting times at charging stations and all the charging that goes on. Uh uh, not for me.

My new 911 992 C2S cab has so much technology in it as well and the infotainment system in the Porsche is pretty good, maybe not the best out there, but pretty good. I like the GPS activated garage door opener! Funny the stupid things we like best!

Re: Tesla Model Y Test Drive

The lack of easy-to-find high speed charging keeps me with Tesla, for now. I'd be delighted to drive another brand of all-electric, but the high-speed charging solutions seem difficult outside of the Tesla ecosystem.

I know, as a long-time ev owner (Tesla daily driver since 2015) that this is really just a form of range anxiety on my part. In my day-to-day life I don't rely on high-speed charging; I have a 40 amp/230v line at home. And we COULD take our other car on long road trips.

    Mike-
Having taken delivery of a Model S Long Range in September of last year, I have gotten completely comfortable with all aspects of the car. It is, without doubt, a delight. All of your reservations about the vehicle have faded from view, and I am completely pleased. in particular, the regenerative braking feature is a non issue! It simply requires learning a new habit; letting off slightly on the accelerator controls the braking beautifully. Once learned, the rate of deceleration is completely within your control. You will only use the brake pedal when needed for quicker stopping.

The incredible acceleration will inspire a new style of driving, which will make winding country roads a delight. Coming out of a tight turn, you can immediately accelerate to 70-80mph, even if only for a few seconds until the next curve!

While it may not be the car for your wife, you should keep an open mind for yourself. I believe that within a few days, you would climb the learning curve enough that you too would become an enthusiast!

BTW, the audio system is the best I have ever experienced in any car. With the built in Tidal app, it will soon learn your favorites automatically from any other Tidal usage.

Tesla is years ahead of any other EV, and will continue to be so. I have a CyberTruck on order, and even though I will be waiting longer than I want, I will!

Congrats! Glad you’re enjoying it. Did you see the video of the up and coming Porsche Cayman EV? Oh boy, they better work on that sound. It’s awful.

Tom it's the 2022 Model S, with the yoke style wheel? I have one on order that should be ready in February sometime. I had 2 model S's in the past, and compared to them the Y doesn't really cut it for ride quality.

Yes, 2022 Model S Refreshed with the Yoke and the air suspension which does provide a superior ride over the Y. Plus, the ability to adjust the clearance is very important to me since I live at the end of a 5 mile from the highway private gravel ranch road, which goes from sea level to 1800' elevation in that distance. With all wheel drive and superb traction control, it does the best of all the cars I have driven on this road over the last 45 years.

While controversial among non Tesla owners, the Yoke is very easy to adjust to and I have learned to like it a lot.

My order was placed in April of 2021 and delivery came at the end of September.

My CyberTruck order was placed in 2020 and it now seems delivery won't happen until late 2023. It will replace a 2005 Chevy Silverado 2500 Diesel which only has 95,000 miles and is a workhorse when needed. I have owned it since 2010. It has a lot of life left, so I can easily wait. I do believe the CyberTruck will be a huge interrupter of the GM/Ford/Dodge pick/up truck market which has seen little innovation over far too long a time.
