    Nordhavn yachts

Any Nordhavn fans? I’ve always been intrigued by the build quality of these yachts.

Here is a nice delivery video of the 68 Nordhavn. Anacortes, WA to Ketchikan, AK.

    What a great hobby/lifestyle.

i'm subscribed to the Nordhavn 'Dreamers' group distribution list. and i enjoy all the information discussed. i watch some of the youtube Nordhavn content. tried to go aboard one locally a month ago but the schedule was all full up.

big fan of the new 41, and likely the 47.5 is my favorite. my problem is my wife is on the fence whether she is gung ho enough to dive that deep into trawlers. so i'm dreaming, but not doing. then there is the 'live-aboard' approach verses keeping your land home too. which changes the financials.

it does not hurt to think about an escape from this really crazy world we find ourselves stuck in. i'm pretty fed up with it. and one of the best ways is Nordhavn.

Nordhavn + S.E Alaska = my idea of bliss.

I've been on their list for years so also enjoy the material and videos from time to time. I like the idea of a Trawler or a Lobster boat although I've never owned that style boat. I can see myself moving further up north of the east coast, somewhere in the New England area and getting into a trawler to spend days and perhaps some nights on the water.

It is a big commitment, no doubt. But if the 41 is within your reach and the 47.5 will force you to think much harder or make sacrifices, I'd go for the 41 and start living the dream. One thing money still can't buy is one extra day on this blue planet... Not yet anyways. The worst regrets must be letting go of dreams and never doing the things that were within reach...

    Good luck!

I'm on their mailing list too, seemingly after my first tour of a Nordhaven 15 years ago at the Southampton Boat Show - they have long memories!

I was impressed with the build quality and comfort and the fact that it's sort of affordable as far as running costs go. Instead of twin 370 hp engines that typical day runabouts have and capable of 40 knots (my brother has one), these plodders have single (usually I believe) big lazy engines that sip fuel rather more considerately. This gives them a huge range, high reliability and low running costs - just the job for an explorer type of vessel for those wanting to cast off, travel hundreds of miles and explore.

Although I've visited Nordhavens, I eventually convinced myself that I prefer to see land rather than sea, so opted for an inland waterways motor cruiser that offers similar benefits of low costs and good accommodation, but finding overnight moorings is easy and weather becomes nothing more than a mild inconvenience. The best thing though is that you are never more than a few feet from land and this changes by the minute - rather different from sea travel. This inland waterways lifestyle is probably more difficult to find in the US than Europe where I travel. It surprised me how many Americans (and Canadians, Aussies and Kiwis) that I encounter on these canals, rivers and lakes.

For a cost effective vessel for prolonged distance or time travel at sea, I’d seriously look Nordhaven or perhaps Trader.

I enjoyed this video of a 2008 47 Seabird. This yacht has seen some great adventures in her lifetime and I am sure has plenty more to give the new owners.

Nordhavn 47 SEABIRD is for sale by her original owners who traded their Sparkman and Stephens sailboat in to embrace life under power with a solid vessel that could take them anywhere. They took delivery in California and have traveled north to Alaska, spending a couple of years in the Northwest before heading south back to California, on to Mexico and then exploring central America. Cutting through the Panama Canal they ventured through the Caribbean and then used Florida as their stepping off place to sail eastward. SEABIRD crossed the Atlantic on her own bottom.

Two glorious years were spent cruising the Mediterranean before shipping back to the US as on deck cargo aboard a freighter due to other commitments. A veteran of four different summer trips to Alaska and extensive cruising that included ocean passages, island hopping and exploring remote coves and isolated shores. She eventually meandered back to their home port of Santa Barbara, an appropriate and special home for this wonderful trawler. Since 2012, SEABIRD has enjoyed a more coastal lifestyle with many adventures along the US west coast, the California Channel Islands becoming the preferred location to get away. SEABIRD has travelled more than 40,000 miles.

    Peter-

There are thousand of miles if inland waterways in the US and Canada.

The Great Loop is a continuous waterway that recreational mariners can travel that includes part of the Atlantic, Gulf Intracoastal Waterways, the Great Lakes, Canadian Heritage Canals, and the inland rivers of America's heartland. Anyone who completes the journey is then named an official ' Looper.'

Lots of videos and info on line.

I thought about getting a new N41, but I think the Greenlines are a better choice for my plans.

For those interested in Nordhavns, I can highly recommend this book(two parts) abount a couple that took a N43 around the world.

By the way, the Nordhavn 43 "MV Freedom" from the video blog I posted above was Fleetwood Mac John McVie's yacht before he upgraded to the N60 "MV Pearl". Pendana: Making The Last Rounds Of Hawaii (BLOG) - PassageMaker

So, John McVie’s N43, Endurance became MV Freedom.

Isn't it bad luck to rename a boat?

Hmm, not sure. I thought MV Freedom stood for McVie Freedom so I doubt the new owners would rename the boat and keep the MV part?

Quick search on DuckDuckGo — Privacy, simplified.

What does 'MV' before a ship's name mean?

    It stands for Motor Vessel.
