New Porsche Cayman GT4 RS Roars to Life

New Cayman GT4 RS Roars to Life in Nurburgring Lap

"The first-ever ‘RS’ Cayman stuns its younger brother the standard GT4 with a massive 23.6-second improvement across the Green Hell.

Once upon a time Porsche led us to believe that the coveted ‘RS’ title would never find its onto the 911s little brother, the Cayman/Boxster. However, we are happy to report that the 718 Cayman GT4 RS is a real thing and soon to be ready for official debut in November."

Many of us know the longstanding hot take that the Cayman is secretly the best Porsche money can buy. Not just that, but that Porsche knowingly has hamstringed the Cayman time and time again (cue gear ratios) in order prevent rivaling the flagship 911.

However, it seems that finally the GT division at Porsche has finally decidedly made up their minds and given in into realizing the full range of the Cayman’s stunning mid-engine potential. The result is the first ever RS variant of a Cayman. So far it looks like everything we could have hoped for.

Had my name on the proverbial list for a long time for the 718 GT4 RS. Will check out the official launch next month, but if it checks out, my 718 GT4 will be going bye bye.

Now what to do about that Z06 I’ve been #2 on a wait list for 2 years….New Porsche Cayman GT4 RS Roars to Life

If you are lucky to actually score an RS for yourself, it is a no brainer from every aspect of the game, including financial. They hold value and in this market carry a premium. I scored an RS GT3 some years back and I don't even want to mention what people were willing to pay.... Let's just say I could not resist that sum.

I saw this coming a while back. While everyone was fussing over the GT3 (including me), I thought the better play was the GT4 RS. I think I got in early enough. Myself and another member here are 1 and 2, so….fingers crossed.

Good luck! The GT3 in any form is always a solid buy with either a premium or at the very least near full value retention years down the road... The GT4 Caymans seem to be holding that trend as well.

I once turned down a $200k GT3 4.0 as I had my garage full of other toys... Let's just say that car popped to over $750k these days as my other toys were long sold and forgotten... I was number 1 on the list for a 911R but all those cars went to owners of the 918 Spyder first and I never got one...

    Try this with a Corvette....

"The 911 R isn't the only limited-edition Porsche that sells for obscene amounts of money.

We're used to seeing the 911 R being overvalued at $1 million, but it turns out it isn't the only limited-edition Porsche that can command unbelievably high price tags. Recently at the Amelia Island auction of Gooding & Co, a rare 2011 example of the Porsche 997 GT3 RS 4.0 was sold for an incredible $748,000. There are reasons for its rarity, but it still doesn't justify the shockingly steep price. Only 158 examples were built for the US, 36 of which were painted black."

The crazy prices on rare Porsche models is just the beginning. You ain't seen nothing yet... Give it another 10-15 years as the EVs flood the roads and see how much some of the Stuttgart/Zuffenhausen creations with screaming internal combustion engines and especially with manual gearboxes go for as the collectors are concerned...

A Ferrari 250 GTO was often a tough sell at $12-14K used in the 70’s…
    Some were sold below $10k.
One was auctioned by Victoria High School in Texas, US for $6600 in ‘71. It had been donated to the school seven years prior.

Talk about a $50-75Million plus windfall profits for the dedicated collectors. They will only keep going up in price.

My local Ferrari dealer was the first in the country. Algar Ferrari…At some point in the mid 60’s They had a few preowned 250 Testa Rossa cars sitting outside in the rain. No one wanted to buy them…

I had a great time with the Cayman R. That was actually my first PDK equipped Porsche as I wanted to experience what all the hype was about. No doubt a brilliant car and PDK was insanely good. Went on a few organized road rallies and impressed the heck out of myself with what the car can do. Still missed the manual though. If tracking, I would not hesitate to go with PDK. For street driving, not so much. Traffic or errands driving? PDK all day long but driving a Porsche in traffic would at the very least have me consider a Panamera, Cayenne or a Macan instead.

The RS GT4 would be a blast on the track and a sprint on the back roads away from traffic where the car can at least strut its stuff in the smallest degree

We have a Macan Turbo and just like all 911’s with a small turbo, I just don’t like it as much as a pure NA. NA all day for me.

I had the pleasure of owning an ‘08 and ‘10 GT3 and an ‘08 Cayenne GTS. All would make beautiful NA noises that would wake the neighbors as well as the dead and make any enthusiasts blood boil. Those were the days. The howl of that GT3 at full throttle as one would row the gearbox still lives in my memory. They just don’t sound anywhere near as good today.

here is the CEO/major domo of the world's largest carmaker and his take.

Toyota President Akio Toyoda: All-EV plan wrong for Japan | Automotive News

Tesla is still the only one making money selling automobile electrics, and that is more sociology/bling/coolness than market trend. unless these auto makers sell millions and millions of ICE cars there will be no R&D to fuel electrics. of course, some would like Uncle Sugar to foot the bill for them.

ultimately Congress will make this pro-electrics decision for us, the value equations don't work for a market based solution. no one is beating down the doors for non Tesla all electrics in the volume part of the marketplace.

Serge, you know what's interesting, having attended many IMSA and before American LeMans series event over the years, nothing is more piercing than the exhaust note of the 911's. I remember this past June @ the Glen listening to the #79 GTLM Porsche come out of turn 11 and scream down the front straight. Even with ear protection it was WOW !!
    Cheers ! …. Dave

I have a ‘18 Macan Turbo with performance package which to my ears sounds incredibly good. But it’s a 3.6L unlike the newer Turbo that equipped with 2.9L. Of course it’s nothing like how a GT3 could scream though.

The cayman is a great platform. Fantastic to see Porsche finally installing the right power plants in them.

I originally owned a 2006 Cayman S and it was a joy to drive. Terrific handling and road feel but it was a bit underpowered. Fast forward to the GT4 and GT4 RS; now, this is exciting!

Dave, no doubt. Racing engines can sound glorious and the Flat 12 of Porsche sure had a wail that is unforgettable. The Ferrari P 330 is an amazing car visually and it sounds magnificent. Outside of the track, the 250 GTO with its Colombo V-12 is still one of the most petrolicious cars there ever was!

My 14 Turbo S is the fastest, funnest, and well made car I have ever owned.
My dealership hates me, 'cause I never have any need to take it in (do my own basic maintenance).

    Very cool!

I was always more of a NA fan but had my share of Turbo cars, Porsche and some other brands... Some years back I picked up a 997TT and bought my son his first dream car, a lightly preowned 996TT. We have great memories of running the cars together on many road trips. Both were modified by AWE Tuning and producing in excess of 560HP with the 997 and 996 not far off that mark either. In retrospect, probably not the smartest idea to let a 17 year old drive a Twin Turbo Porsche as his daily but he is a very responsible young man. Both fantastic cars.
