    Four Seater Convertible

I'm thinking of picking up a four seater convertible for fun with the family. I have my eye on a preowned Audi S5, maybe a preowned BMW 335. I've even looked a preowned California. A lot more than I wanted to spend....but oh so pretty!

Whatever I get has to have a reasonably big enough back seat for kids, not some faux backseat. I would like to be able to get my golf clubs in the trunk. Has to have good power and be real sporty to drive. I prefer preowned because it's a third car and really just for fun, but will consider new for the perfect car.

Would these two be at the top of your list of suggestions or should I look at something else?

Is the backseat in a 911 a joke or worth considering?

I think the S5 is the best looking convertible. That said, new A4 will be introduced later this year....you can probably pick one up for a song after that.

the other thing you want to consider is if you prefer soft or hard top.

my favorite convertible for sane money is the Boxster S...but its a true roadster. I would take it over a Cabriolet...

    Re: Four Seater Convertible

Mike.......Maybe it's just my age but convertibles in Florida seem damn near useless most of the time. It's too hot nearly all of the time to be able to enjoy the experience of having the top down and it's noisy. The people in the back seat get beat up with wind buffeting and in stop and go traffic the exhaust fumes can be aggravating. Convertibles remind me of owning a boat. You use it often the first couple of months, then once a month after that, then once every six months, then once a year and after three years you want to sell it.

Naturally, if you're considering an Aston Martin Vanquish Volante, that's a whole different story when cruising around in the evening with the top down. Still, even something as nice as the Vanquish will be a garage queen more than a road runner.

    Re: Four Seater Convertible

    Mike,

i have an M4 - not the convertible. Love the car. The convertible is a bit heavy - adds 400 pounds for the convertible hard top. The S5 is a nice option if you can find one. The Mercedes E550 is another good option. Both accommodate 4 and under $100K. For short rides and a blast to drive the BMW 235M convertible has plenty of pep but space is somewhat limited in the rear.

I personally dont like the convertible hard top. It is too heavy and it tends to be noisy - when deployed. Drove a MB SL550 and the darn thing drove me crazy. Also, my sister in law has. 335 convertible and it has a similar issue.

Yes, the California is a beauty. No way 4 can fit. But, really, how often do you drive with a car full of people?

I forgot the BMW 6 series (650 and M6). Very nice and elegant. Another good option. But, it drives a little heavy. Depends what you are looking for in a car.

OK, this would be totally impractical, insanely expensive to maintain, definitely not seat four, but it would check something off my bucket list and fulfill a life long dream of mine:

Steve.......That's supposed to be funny? It's totally lost on the majority of AS members, with only a small group who understand your dig. It appears you revel in carrying old baggage. I have corresponded with you on forums for a number of years and consider you an intelligent individual so I must ask what positive results can possibly come from continuing to beat a dead horse? This is beneath you. We get it, there is someone you don't hold in high regard. Fine, but who else do you think cares? Set yourself free and leave this baggage behind you.

Pretty bad ass...must give this a try...my only reservation is that I had a 2004 M3 and compared to my Porsche I owned previously, it drove like "Dad's sedan".

The Mercedes E550 is another good option. Both accommodate 4 and under $100K. For short rides and a blast to drive the BMW 235M convertible has plenty of pep but space is somewhat limited in the rear.
Yes, that's my issue with the M4 as well- it adds 400lbs which takes away the driving dynamics on what is a pretty large vehicle to begin with. The M235i vert might be the perfect idea as the smaller chassis lends itself to better handling. I am looking at trading my S5 coupe for an M235 or upcoming M2...still haven't figured out which one. My car's 3950lbs is just too much for me in the SoCal canyons. Its a great daily driver though.

If it's a fun convertible that seats 4 that you want, then the Mini is the most fun. Especially for the money. You should test drive one. It doesn't have the finesse or speed of say a BMW or Audi convertible, but much more fun to drive.

    Re: Four Seater Convertible

Took delivery yesterday. My wife surprised me - she totally appreciates what this car can do (eg she will be using launch control). Here pix of his and hers. Last two pix are of Jenny driving with too down (with a big grin) and my son driving home from dealership with me in my new Turbo S. He was so interested in the whole process including the negotiation. He spent hours with me on this - I think he has the car bug firmly rooted now. Thought you guys would enjoy the pix and celebrate with me a great family moment.
