Same thing with iPhones playing the most demanding games; their batteries suffer.
That's probably why they don't have a 120Hz refresh rate, yet. We could see that next year (maybe) or in 2023. That too takes a toll on batteries; the reason why smart adaptive refresh rate is best...like in some top Android smartphones. You can have high mileage still with efficient batteries (dual configuration).

    * EV manufacturers are working hard with investors cash to perfect their batteries...made in Canada, Mexico, etc. ...With materials from all over the planet (Lithium from Afghanistan, etc.).

Google Engineers Explain Why They Stopped R&D in Renewable Energy

    “This realization was frankly shocking.”

The team came to that conclusion after examining different scenarios for renewable energy penetration using a low-carbon modeling tool from the consulting firm McKinsey. They compared those scenarios to former NASA scientist James Hansen's famous 2008 model showing that a 350 ppm emissions level was needed to stabilize the climate.

    They didn't find promising results:

We decided to combine our energy innovation study’s best-case scenario results with Hansen’s climate model to see whether a 55 percent emission cut by 2050 would bring the world back below that 350-ppm threshold. Our calculations revealed otherwise. Even if every renewable energy technology advanced as quickly as imagined and they were all applied globally, atmospheric CO2 levels wouldn’t just remain above 350 ppm; they would continue to rise exponentially due to continued fossil fuel use. So our best-case scenario, which was based on our most optimistic forecasts for renewable energy, would still result in severe climate change, with all its dire consequences: shifting climatic zones, freshwater shortages, eroding coasts, and ocean acidification, among others. Our reckoning showed that reversing the trend would require...radical technological advances in cheap zero-carbon energy, as well as a method of extracting CO2 from the atmosphere and sequestering the carbon.

Incremental improvements to existing technologies aren’t enough; we need something truly disruptive to reverse climate change. What, then, is the energy technology that can meet the challenging cost targets? How will we remove CO2 from the air? We don’t have the answers. Those technologies haven’t been invented yet.

Disinformation? Is that like a new blanket statement when convenient or the truth is inconvenient? You call information from the best engineers that Google money can buy disinformation? There is a reason Elon Musk is donating $100 Million for carbon sequestration ideas. The green energy approach won't get us there fast enough. It is not possible.

    Re: EV Cars

Trying to solve the climate change in a disruptive way will only hurt everyone. You can drive your EV and you can feel good about it, I get that but we have some very serious problems brewing because many administrations and policy makers around the globe are taking an approach that neither the demand created by our civilization, nor the infrastructure is capable of dealing with. With news like this, we can all clearly see that we will be all paying through the nose for ALL the changes.... Trust that EV is not going to change anything but only complicate things further in the mean time.

From CNN for example as the first article that popped up! CNN! I repeat the left leaning CNN so one should not claim political agenda and disinformation here Also notice everyone is scrambling to secure oil, gas and coal, not more windmills....

Astronomical increases in natural gas prices. Skyrocketing coal costs. Predictions of $100 oil.

A global energy crunch caused by weather and a resurgence in demand is getting worse, stirring alarm ahead of the winter, when more energy is needed to light and heat homes.

Governments around the world are trying to limit the impact on consumers, but acknowledge they may not be able to prevent bills spiking.

Further complicating the picture is mounting pressure on governments to accelerate the transition to cleaner energy as world leaders prepare for a critical climate summit in November.

In China, rolling blackouts for residents have already begun, while in India power stations are scrambling for coal. Consumer advocates in Europe are calling for a ban on disconnections if customers can't promptly settle what they owe.

"This price shock is an unexpected crisis at a critical juncture," EU energy chief Kadri Simson said Wednesday, confirming the bloc will outline its longer-term policy response next week. "The immediate priority should be to mitigate social impacts and protect vulnerable households."

In Europe, natural gas is now trading at the equivalent of $230 per barrel, in oil terms — up more than 130% since the beginning of September and more than eight times higher than the same point last year, according to data from Independent Commodity Intelligence Services.

In East Asia, the cost of natural gas is up 85% since the start of September, hitting roughly $204 per barrel in oil terms. Prices remain much lower in the United States, a net exporter of natural gas, but still have shot up to their highest levels in 13 years.

"A lot of it is feeding off of fear about what the winter's going to look like," said Nikos Tsafos, an energy and geopolitics expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington-based think tank. He thinks that anxiety has caused the market to break away from the fundamentals of supply and demand.

The frenzy to secure natural gas is also pushing up the price of coal and oil, which can be used as substitutes in some cases, but are even worse for the climate. India, which remains extremely dependent on coal, said this week that as many as 63 of its 135 coal-fired power plants have two days or less of supplies.

The circumstances are causing central banks and investors to worry. Rising energy prices are contributing to inflation, which already was a major concern as the global economy tries to shake off the lingering effects of Covid-19. Dynamics over the winter could make matters worse.

A global energy crisis is coming. There's no quick fix - CNN

    Re: EV Cars

China and others will be very happy to provide everyone with an EV but to make that happen and in the mean time... Again, notice there are no windmills and no solar panels mentioned...

BEIJING/SINGAPORE, Oct 8 (Reuters) - China has ordered its two top coal regions to boost output and will allow coal-fired power utilities to charge customers higher prices as the country battles its worst power crunch in years.

Inner Mongolia and Shanxi told coal miners to lift combined annual production capacity by more than 160 million tonnes, while China's cabinet said market coal-fired power prices may now fluctuate up to 20% from base rates, an increase on previous limits, or more for high energy consuming sectors.

The pricing adjustment is designed to prevent high energy consumption, state media reported, adding that prices for residential and agricultural users, as well as public welfare initiatives, would be kept stable.

Near-record high thermal coal prices and electricity shortages that have prompted power rationing across China have dented the country's industrial output and threaten its economic growth.

Shanxi, China's biggest coal-producing region, ordered its 98 coal mines to raise annual output capacity by 55.3 million tonnes over the remainder of the year, an official from the provincial government confirmed on Friday in a document reviewed by Reuters. read more

Shanxi will also allow some 51 coal mines that had hit their maximum annual production levels to keep producing in the fourth quarter and to raise capacity by 8 million tonnes, which is expected to add 20.65 million tonnes of extra supply.

That is sad. Imagine if decades ago manufacturers had had different gas tank fill pipe openings and requirements. There would not be any Arco, Shell, or Exxon stations. There would be GM, Ford and Dodge gas stations, etc. Do not even think about buying a Saab you would have to put gas into a 5-gallon can and then pour it into your tank.

Maybe someday there will be charging stations with multiple configurations. Like the diesel pump nozzle next to the gasoline nozzles.

I agree that EV is coming but I think its going to take much longer than most people are thinking for a couple of reasons. First … look at average fleet life of cars and trucks and since its 7+ years and since most people in the US won’t be buying an EV for their “Next” purchase you can see how the timeline is going to go way out there. Also, for folks that live in apartments … no good solution for charging for them and nothing on the horizon. Lastly … price is still way to high for the average car buyer. I didn’t even mention the upgrades to our electric infrastructure to deliver such a massive increase in power delivery did I? LOL .. Yes .. folks may be trading their Mercedes and BMW’s for EV’s today as money for them is not the issue and they mistakenly believe they are reducing carbon emissions. My neighbor bought one for that very reason .. when I asked them how our electricity got produced they had no idea and had a blank look on their face.

If you want one because of the features or performance go for it .. the new Hummer seems interesting to me but way too pricey! Bought a 4Runner instead.

I think we are 50 years before EV is the majority of cars actually on the road. That said … if I was a good fortune teller I’d live in Vegas which I don’t so there you have it. Just my 2c! :-)

    Re: EV Cars

I think conversion to EVs may be regional/political like vaccination rates. EV is probably a swear word in oil-producing states. And states with a lot of open space between towns may have a harder time converting.

My utility (Sacramento Municipal Utility District) is going carbon free by 2030 and we get bad air in the summer (cars and fires) so EVs make more sense here.

Living in California, Tesla EVs are almost as common as Toyotas and Hondas. It seems like Teslas are every 3rd auto on the road! Of course, PG&E has the highest electric rates in the entire country. Depending on your usage, it can be as high as $0.50/kwh! Nonetheless, EVs make sense.

I installed my 1st solar system (hot water) in 1980. It has paid for itself several times over. I have had solar panels to heat my swimming pools for the last 40 years. My 1st solar electric system was installed in 2003. Several additions over the years has brought it's size up to 16KW.

Three weeks ago I took delivery of a Tesla Model S (refreshed version), Long Range (405 miles). It had been on order since April. It was well worth the wait. The fit, finish, and features are wonderful. The instant acceleration, 0-60mph in 3.1 seconds is thrilling. In short, it has exceeded my expectations and is the finest vehicle I have ever owned. With the exception of the occasional road trip, it will be totally fueled by my home solar system. In spite of income from the oil industry, I believe solar is the future, and to ignore or belittle the fact is stupid. The use of fossil fuels must and will decline. The future is coming on rapidly. Embrace it!

BTW, The Tesla has the best sound system I have ever experienced in an automobile

I also ride an e-Bike. It is my primary mode of inner city (SF) transport.

I suppose we don't need to mention the BIG OIL pays a lion's share of the federal tax revenue? Three out of top 10 companies paying taxes are BIG OIL. The government spends way more and runs a tremendous deficit. In fact last time there was a surplus was in 2001. Removing BIG OIL from the pictures will help HOW? Only by taxing other industries and individuals more and more and MORE...

Thumbs up for the efforts using renewable energy!

Here in Singapore, cars including Tesla are ridiculously expensive. But I am still waiting for availability of Model Y and hopefully it will be available soon.

I get where you are coming from. Yes there will be major upheaval. It is inevitable. There is no stopping it everyone is on to climate change, so there will be a rush to move on from ICE. The oil company's are major tax contributor, they do get healthy amount of subsides. There are bigger fish that will get caught up in this.
I for one believe this is necessary. From upheaval will come growth.

One step at a time. Let's get through this winter first... China and others are scrambling for coal right now to keep the AC flowing and factories from standing still in the dark due to energy shortages.

    Re: EV Cars

By the way, Elon Musk is not a proponent of electric cars because of climate change as many would assume. It is a different reason besides obvious success in a profitable business venture. He claims oil is finite and we should be thinking of sustainable energy that we don't run out of. Oil scarcity would cause an economic collapse. Very true... Look at what is happening to oil prices now and we have NOT run out or even close to it yet. (A topic for another time but there is a theory that the Earth replenishes oil much faster than we think and we just do not understand the process.)

    Re: EV Cars

"Abiotic Oil a Theory Worth Exploring....

It's our nature to sort, divide, and classify. We label ourselves to identify political leanings, religious beliefs, the food we enjoy, and the sports teams we cheer. The oil industry too has its own distinct labels which include the "Peak Oil" theorists, those who believe the world is fast depleting the finite supply of fossil fuel; and the pragmatists, those who recognize that engineering and technological advances in oil drilling and extraction continuously identify new reserves that make oil plentiful.

And there's a third group you may not know. These people are deeply interested in oil and its origins, but their advocacy of "abiotic theory" has many dismissing them as heretics, frauds, or idealists. They hold that oil can be derived from hydrocarbons that existed eons ago in massive pools deep within the earth's core. That source of hydrocarbons seeps up through the earth's layers and slowly replenishes oil sources. In other words, it turns the fossil-fuel paradigm upside down. "

What makes you think my posts from actual scientists and leading figures on the topic are disinformation and your opinion and sources are factual? Let's see some counterpoints. If you cannot provide them, please refrain from further comments and cheap attempts at insults.

It was a beautiful autumn day where I am. Nice foliage and a great day for a drive in my ICE car.

Bolsonaro is into the rainforest deforestation for profit, can’t say I agree with that personally and hopefully the trees that are planted by various countries, will compensate. 7 Billion trees were planted. USA has far fewer trees than Brazil and about 3x less trees than Russia which also relies heavily on logging as one of their exports.

How many trees were planted in 2019?

About 7 billion trees. Planting trees to help alleviate the impacts of climate change was pretty much the theme for 2019. There were thousands of organizations, events, and causes that sought to help plant as many trees as possible.

In the US alone, the country planted more than 5 million trees over the year across 18,000 acres of the National Forests.

Countries like Ethiopia almost made a Guinness World Record with their 4billion tree planting initiative when they tried to plant 200million trees in a day. In slightly over 12 hours, the country reported planting 353,633,660 trees – which was 100m trees more than their target.

In the UK, the government reported planting over 3,281,000 trees across a 1,956-hectare piece of land. For Brazil, more than 4.7 million trees were planted to help recover the forest cover lost from fires.

Turkey also famously planted around 11million trees in late 2019.

With most countries setting tree planting initiative goals for 2030 and 2050, we can expect even more trees to be planted in 2020 and the subsequent years.
