Re: EV Cars
Interesting video Joe ! So in essence Tesla said 'replace the battery' and one wonders , would they then just dispose of it ?? if so, so much for the great 'green thinking' of EV's !!
I would hope they would in fact refurb it for further use, regardless they have clearly demonstrated how to screw over the consumer !!Cheers ! …. Dave

Re: EV Cars
One of the issues with EV's, is how will the government recoup the loss of road/sales taxes.
When you buy a gallon of gas there is a significant amount of taxes. When charging and using an EV these do not apply.
I'm sure that they will figure out a way to tax and at least maintain their share. My System

Re: EV Cars
The battery pack was absolutely fine. It was just a broken inlet that lets coolant circulate around the pack to keep it cool. They would not even let the customer keep the battery pack which he could have sold to make up the difference. There's a big movement now for "right to repair" so entire assemblies will not have to be replaced for a small broken part.

It already exists. It’s called ‘The Electric Bill’. When I bought my amps in the middle of July of 2008 (I think) I played them for two weeks. Because they creat so much heat, I ran my AC the whole time. When I got my outrageous July electric bill I freaked out, and then had solar installed in September. Now I listen to my stereo, at most, twice a week in the summer. Nothing is cheap anymore.

How would you power these stations nuclear or coal burning plants?
Technology for Solar and wind power is not even close to supporting our infrastructure. Hydro electric is not considered clean sustainable power, no credits applied to that industry.
Unfortunately politics and money interest run the “clean” energy narrative.

Re: EV Cars
In the French Alps last summer, a plane set seven new world records. The two-seater aircraft climbed more than 20,000 feet in under two minutes, and reached speeds of 142 miles per hour. It flew nonstop for 300 miles, yep a single battery. The plane was called the e-Genius . Sure battery in big planes is too many years off to count but people are working on it. Which by then some new technology will be invented.
And hell we already have cyber attacks on the power grids all over the world.. And even fuel supplies have been hacked which impacted the south and lower east cost. . May 7 Colonial Pipeline was hacked (a ransom attack) . A February report from IBM found that the energy industry was the third most targeted sector for such attacks in 2020, behind only finance and manufacturing.2chl : Vincent Sp331MkII, W4S STP-SE Stage 2, Kef 201/2, KEF 140, Vapor Breeze, Lumin, Bryston CD, BHA-1, Quicksilver Headamp, HD650, HD800s, HD820's, Dan Clark 1.1, Focal Stellia, OPPO 203, 105. Solar powered stations and solar homes can charge the batteries in EV. No need of a rocket science PhD. In 2050 nuclear fusion is another possibility.

At this point and time and anywhere in the near future, nuclear is the only alternative to replace fossil fuels and hydroelectric (if we have water) to power the globe
Your major industries all rely on coal, natural gas and hydro electric.
Gotta start sometime since I’ll probably won’t be around in 2050.

You cannot build enough or as many as you need for sustainable water with desalination plants, won’t happen.
Aquifers are drying up globally……Farmers in California largest agricultural state in the world is drying up. They’re having to drill for ancient water to water their crops and ground water does not have the nutrients that rain water has.
I agree we need alternative methods to power our infrastructure or life style as we know it may not exist, but again, I doubt I’ll witness that event. My kids and grandkids will, though!

In North Korea they have to get rice from the army's supplies to feed their population.
In North America they have to evict for the landlords to survive.
In Asia they have to find oxygen to save their people.
In South America they have to elect new leaders to save themselves.
They can build all the EVs for 7.8 billion people, and it can rain for a full year; it won't save the planet and all the audiophiles.
Anyway, we try our best to enjoy now for everyone. What else can we do that we didn't already do.

Re: EV Cars
I am a landlord. Having previously owned a small business, these homes were intended as part of my retirement portfolio.
I don't understand (nor agree with) the ability of a government to take away my source of income on one hand, while still demanding me to pay the taxes, utilities, maintenance, registration and inspection fees. Plus there is for many landlords loan payments to the bank that need to be met. All while not receiving ANY income.
If the government wishes to impose such restrictive policies (which I don't understand how this can be legal) on business owners (landlords) they should justly compensate them.
Can you imagine the government telling WalMart that they need to maintain an ample supply of food in their stores yet the customers don't have to pay for it?????My System

Re: EV Cars
Perhaps if this were only up to the consumer, but virtually all major governments are "interfering", and now even Toyota (which had been committed to hybrids) is having to adjust to the likely future of EVs. Good or bad, it is happening, and perhaps rather than complaining we should be looking more closely at the technological hurdles to overcome to make it a more pleasant reality.
It's still a bit hard for me to understand the resistance to the overall driving experience in a high quality EV, which is astonishingly better than any other road vehicle. As Porsche, Mercedes and BMW roll out more of their EVs in both car and SUV platforms it will become even more obvious to the doubters.Rob

Re: EV Cars
and now back to our regularly scheduled programming.
I'm all in favor of EV's However I don't feel that they have reached a level of practicality to where I would chose to participate.
I am against government subsidies in development, manufacturing and purchases. Let private industry do their thing . Isn't an old adage, develop a better mousetrap and people will buy it?
My primary concerns are Price, range and availability of charging stations. Until these are significantly addressed count me out.
IMO they have surpassed the novelty stage and have entered into the limited usability stage. Just not fully fleshed out yet. Perhaps great for a second vehicle to be used in the city.
I keep flashing back to the news photos of EV's lined up at charging stations trying to flee the California wild fires. My System

Re: EV Cars
Here in California Teslas seem to be almost every 5th car I see on the road. I expect delivery of a Model S Long Range (405 miles) this month. I have yet to encounter a single owner who wasn't extremely pleased with theirs. Many claim it's the finest and most pleasing auto they have ever owned. Many YouTubers say the same. My average daily trip is 80-100 miles. I will charge at home overnight with surplus energy from my 9 year old solar system, so Zero cost, and no trips to the gas station! Since I live in the boonies, my nearest gas station (8 miles away) charges $4.99/gallon.
Auto Pilot is proven by statistics to be far safer (fewer accidents/100,000 miles) than any human driver, although the driver still needs to be paying attention. Full self driving will happen very soon. It's only a matter of time before the many naysayers on this thread will have to change their opinion!Tom
