Re: Corvette ZO6 .........
Great looking car! Still surprised that it took GM more than 50 years to come up with a mid engine Corvette. Very glad they did!

I would say since the C5 a corvette was no longer just a muscle car and had always represented good value , C6 and C7 just made it real ..
Comparing them to exotics costing ridiculous sums more and winning less races is so ...

Re: Corvette ZO6 .........
I have - the best quote I heard was - its the best sports car to come out of America - that's not saying much. Vs a Porsche 911 - no contest - yes there is a significant price difference - the Corvette does offer "so much for so little money compared to a Porsche" - which is the better car - the answer is Porsche & by the value in the difference in price - the defence rests.

Re: Corvette ZO6 .........
Well, I’ve owned 4 Porsche’s, including a 2018 911 GTS. Compared to my C7 GS, the Corvette was a far better car, way more fun and it didn’t sound like a 2 stroke scooter when it took off either. Don’t get me wrong, the 911 GTS was great in many ways, but boring as hell compared to the C7 GS.
As for the C8? That’s a whole different level and the C8 Z06 proves to be, quite possibly, the last true naturally aspirated Corvette that will be made as the future for Corvette is a separate brand and “E-Rays”. This last Z06 will be a collectors item and a great car I’m sure.

Re: Corvette ZO6 .........
Because in the 60s, Zora Arkus-Duntov the “Father of the Corvette” wanted to build a mid-engine but GM corporate (the suits) did not want to invest in it. His parting words when retiring from GM in 1975 were to ask his successors for a mid-engine Corvette.

Re: Corvette ZO6 .........
Enzo famously said he "never seen a horse push a cart" the Italians were the last adopters in motorsport to to go mid and rear engine. It all came about when the British--by way of Cooper--brought the first rear-engine F1 car into prominence. One could argue Auto Union (nee Audi) did it first, but it wasn't called F1 back then.

Re: Corvette ZO6 .........
Because the technical arguments for a better Corvette with a mid-engine were well established since the 60s.
One could argue (shortsighted view of course) that if a car is selling fine despite its limitations, why bother? That’s probably what GM corporate thought. But with many older boomers having bought their last Corvette and perhaps a younger generation looking for a more technically advanced car, GM finally changed course.
IMO, the mid-engine Corvettes are attracting new buyers that would have never consider Corvettes before. I am also sure that it is viewed by some old timers as sacrilegious but those guys probably already bought their last Corvette anyway.
Change is good.

Re: Corvette ZO6 .........
exactly and thus, not a surprise !
Remember at the time Zora was doing his best to push the mid-engine concept GM was quickly trying to distance itself from all things racing. As we now reflect back to that time it's only fitting that GM (Corvette) has acquired the rights to the name Zora Duntov for I suspect when the 'statement' C8 is produced it will bear his name and justifiably so !Cheers ! …. Re: Corvette ZO6 .........
IMO , a corvette is a front engine car , the collector is going to be the last front engine ZO6 , the Mid engine car thought to be a swan song was really influenced by Leman rules which favor mid Engine cars , Corvette want’s to keep continuing to dominate at Lemans, it also makes it also easier to transition to EV for the predicted class rules ...

Speaking of Le Mans and the WEC in general. This coming weekend the boys are at 'Spa' in Belgium and it will be special, Ollie Gavin and Antonio Garcia to pilot the C8R entry. This will be Gavin's last professional race, best of luck to the 'Captain', one of the best sports car drivers of all time !

Well there you go , goggle corvette at le lemans and awaken so successful even Ferrari had to run , Domination was such the class died then they added weight and smaller inlet restrictors in an effort to run in the lower class against porsche, BMW and Ferrari ..
This mid engine car is for the future ..!
Ok so no Bathurst Wins ..
BTW never owned or raced a corvette ( driven a few) only competed against them, i’m mostly Porsches the last 30 yrs, you learn to respect winning competition and win they did ..!

Re: Corvette ZO6 .........
Not sure what Le Mans or "racing" has in common with a typical Corvette or a Porsche owner, driving his car in bumper to bumper traffic but all that HP and new designs sure do generate lots of excitement behind the keyboards...
After owning all kinds of performance and exotic oriented cars from various countries over the decades, I have completely gotten it out of my system and drive a Jeep with the top open to get my automotive adrenaline fix these days.

Serge, I hear 'ya but there is a lot left of the, 'win on Sunday, sell on Monday' ideology and all the brand loyalty that goes with it. Just go to any major sports car race here in N America and you will find the legions gathered at both the Porsche and Corvette corrals.
As for the driving excitement, you and I both live in this third world country of roads known as 'Pennsytucky' !Cheers ! …. Dave

Re: Corvette ZO6 .........
Oh I know the culture well. It wasn't that long ago that I was still driving up to cars and coffee with my stallions that would come and go... Some guys would buy a Ferrari and trade it for another before it was time to wash it for the first time... I'm not kidding!
The cars are so capable and so mind blowing in terms of technology and progress that it is hard not to be impressed. Just not sure what actual use they have unless one takes them to the track where they shine. I try to visit my parents in Naples FL every year and all I can say is the "traffic" during the season is also mind blowing.... Not much use for a Z06 in Florida the way I see it.
The Pennsytucky pot holes are indeed impressive. Amazing how much taxes we pay and how large the potholes still get. They bother me not one bit with my 33" tires of the Jeep though. It just swallows them up like they are not even there.... Quite a difference from the damaged rims and tires of the sports cars and exotics... yikes!

You should come to N Texas then.
I drive 80-90 mph everyday for my 20 mile trip to the office. Very seldom is that not the case. No - not rush hour, but not in the middle of the night either. When my wife comes to visit (we live in Oregon) she will go out and hit 130 easy - but she's crazy . . . .

I think both C7 ZO6 and C8 ZO6 may become collectible, for different reasons.
I have bought 2020 Audi R8 V10 (5.2L NA engine, reving up to 8800rpm) with the intention to keep it indefinately. I will probably get the new, budget Tesla in 2024 as a daily and will be all set.Adam

Re: Corvette ZO6 .........
As for comparisons to Porsche 911s let’s remember there are a variety of 911 models. If we stick to the base 911, I would expect the C8 Z06 to be a FAR better car on the road and track. As you go up the chain with the Porsche 911 ladder, that conclusion would no doubt change from a performance on the track standpoint but the value side of the equation will almost no doubt favor the Z06.
A base 911 is not a match for the C7 GrandSport on the track. (I know first hand)
I would expect the base C8 to trouble even a Turbo 911 and perhaps the higher models. The reported/expected performance of the C8 Z06 may very well put it in Gt3/GT2 land at half the cost. Again, performance and value.
But we need to actually see the new Z06 on the track.

Re: Corvette ZO6 .........
Corvette needs an extreme track focused version of the Z06 ŕ la rennsport like Porsche's RS versions of the GT2/GT3. The C8 could stand to loose 400+ lbs, the demand for such a car would surprise you (maybe not). Demand for RS versions over the standard GT3 are like 2:1 with a stiff upcharge for the privilege.

Re: Corvette ZO6 .........
That is basicly Audi R8 V10 performance (midengine / 620hp / 8800 redline / 5.2L NA engine / magnetic ride / carbon brakes) minus the AWD drive, for 120k less. Which makes it a screeming deal.

I remember your gated R8. Now the manual R8 command +30% premium. Recently, a low milage (10k miles) mint condition 2009 Audi R8 V10 6MT sold at an auction on BringaTrailer.com for ... $177k. That is over its original MSRP. Not bad, for a car that is only 12 years old.

Re: Corvette ZO6 .........
No. Anyone that follows endurance racing and esp Le Mans knows its not simply a winner takes all event there are several races on the same track over the same 24 hrs. for other classes. When was the last time a production-based car that wasn't a prototype took the outright win, do you know? and you cant use google, etc.

Re: Corvette ZO6 .........
Oh please - lets just agree to disagree - I have watched many races with individual classes & I couldn't tell what brand won what class last year - other than outright. I note the Corvette's last win was in 2015 in the GTE Pro class - the only person who would know that without Google would be a dedicated - rusted on Corvette fan...
