    Stout's system

New member here and I thought I would post my system. It has taken years but I'm no longer in search for any improvements. I've never been able to say this until very recently but I think I have arrived.

Gorgeous looking system! What is the R2R? Looks like a Revox, but I can't tell.

Those are Audio Artistry Beethoven Elite speakers. Made in the late 90s and designed by Siegfried Linkwitz. These are the very rare Elite version with a balanced 4 way active crossover.

That is a Sony TC-880-2 from the late 70s. Sony only made 500 of them. Mine is totally rebuilt (it did not really need it) and works perfectly

Awesome! Did you replace the heads with the Flux Magnetic ones? Are you using the internal electronics or an external tape pre?

Yes, I am very found of Modwright and own the LS 35.5 DM, PH-150 and Elsye. I also have a KWA 150 Signature Edition but it is out of rotation because the Beethoven Elite's require eight channels of amplification and I simply can't spring for six more channels of Modwright amps. Right now I am using two Classe CA-150 and two Classe CA-100 amps and I think they work perfectly. They are balanced (which is required with the Audio Artistry four way crossover), a rock solid build and sound great!

I have a VPI Classic signature, in rosewood to match the Beethovens , with two 3D wands and two standard wands. ART-9, DV20x2L, VAS Nova Signature and Transfiguration Axia carts.

Yamaha CD-S2000, Yamaha T-2 tuner, Nakamichi Dragon, and a Sony TC-880-2.

All powered by a dedicated 20 amp line and a Richard Gray 1200C Power supply.

All my interconnects and cables are custom Avanti Audio.

No this deck is totally stock except for new capacitors. It is a really low hour unit I purchased from the estate of the original owner. It saw very little use in its life, and being so rare, I don't have the heart to modify it. It actually sounds very good as is and has some of the best specs of any old R2R. It also weighs 85 lbs and is built like a tank! I am tempted to get an Otari MX 5050 and modify it to the latest technology including direct wiring the heads. Dan Wright mentioned to me that he can modify one of his SS phono circuits to EQ tape.

Yes, I think it sounds great! Sometimes I need to have validation though so I've had several critical listeners over. These are people much more critical than I am and a few of them I have never heard complement anything until I heard them complement this setup. The room is not perfect accustically but I have found the Beethovens are fairly forgiving and deal with the room very well.

Well, done with my main system. I also like vintage stuff and own several examples. I use an old Scott 299C int amp, Scott 350 tuner, Nakamichi RX 505, Akai GX 635D and ADS L420 speakers in my office.

Also have a Decware Taboo MK III and Audeze LCD-2 headphones for late night listening.

    Sweet.
Audio Artistry was way before their time. I'm not sure what happened, but I do recall a review of the Beethoven(?) in SP where the reviewer thought is was best ever heard, etc.
    Very nice system there.

I'm not real sure what happened to audio artistry either? I think they just build kit speakers now? I know the Beethovens were designed by Siegfried Linkwitz who has a popular speaker DIY website. http://www.linkwitzlab.com/

Looking at your website it looks like you are also a supporter of open baffle? Or bipolar as audio artistry called it. It also looks like we both enjoy Modwright? I wish I could swing for four of Dan's amps but the Classe amps seem more than adequate for the task.

Yes I am quite proud of the sound I have achieved in this room. Not that I have any responsibility for the gifted engineers and technicians that built the equipment I use, but all the research and trials I performed in order to get where I am. It starts with the room. 15' x 22' with open cathedral ceiling. There is lots of glass but I have found the blinds do an amazing job attenuating troublesome frequencies. Next of most importance are the speakers. I have greatly admired Siegfried Linkwitz over the years. This is the same Linkwitz that invented the Linkwitz–Riley crossover (along with Russ Riley) that has been standard use in speakers since the 70s. He is also one of the original pioneers in dipole and open baffle speakers. Although I don't began to understand most of his analysis he shares, I have found everything he says to be absolutely true in my own experience.

The Audio Artistry Beethoven Elites are probably Linkwitz's highest speaker achievement to date. I have lusted after a pair for years and got really lucky to find a pair locally just a few years ago. Amazing sounding speakers in so many ways and the absolute key to the musical performance of my room. Everything else in the system was chosen to make these speakers perform to their full potential (within economic reason).

    A couple of article on Linkwitz and these speakers;

Yes, I enjoy the vintage stuff. Mainly because there are so many audio things I lusted after when I was young that I could not afford. Vintage audio is a very fun hobby!

    Re: Stout's system

Hi guys, it’s been a while since I have visited but found some time lately to snoop around. Noticed my system is not updated so thought I would revisit this tread.

I’ve added a Sony APR-5003 open reel deck, and Oppo UDP-205 SACD player and a Yamaha CT-7000 tuner since I last posted. The pro Sony deck is an absolute joy to use and listen to. It also makes marvelous analog recordings. The Oppo is only used for SACD stereo playback and that it does very, very well. I’m thinking about having Modwright upgrade it but maybe next year. I rebuilt the Yamaha tuner and I have to say it may be the best I have ever heard FM? There are a few stations left around here that I am fond of so it was worth the hassle.
