New photos of Randy's system ...

Not sure where to put system photos. I for one love looking at photos of other members setups. If we don't have one yet (and I might be blind and missed it) I suggest a thread for people to post photos of their systems...

Anyway, some updated photos of my loft library sound system....

Nice clean looking system. I can see you gave it a lot of thought about your system. The proper location to post your system is under: AudioShark Members’ Systems

I added some Kimber Kable speaker cables into the system. I have had a couple people ask how they look so here are a couple pictures.

How tall are those stands Randy and how far are your ears above the middle of the driver in the KEF?

Re: New photos of Randy's system ...

They are a tad low. I did not want to get the port on the back firing into open space of the loft. the couch sits fairly low so ear level is only a few inches above the driver. With how good the sound stage and dispersion is I have not noticed it being an issue. When I am doing serious listening I lean way back anyway ....

Re: New photos of Randy's system ...

Using my calibrated eyeballs, I thought the stands weren't all that tall and your ears would be above the drivers. I had custom made stands by Sound Anchor when I owned a pair of the LS-50s. Getting the drivers up to the right height makes a difference. The Sound Anchor stands also weighed about 60 lbs each and provided a super-stable platform for the LS-50s to sit on which also improves the sound.

Re: New photos of Randy's system ...

The absolute center of the drivers are 26", my ears are at about 35" - 36". So they are a tad low, but seem ok. The top of the port is at 31". The loft wall is at 36". I don't want the port to fire any where close to the open space. KEF makes a big point about positioning of the port.... I also have built the entire system from scratch over the past few months so I had to make a few compromises. I wish I had a more ideal situation but this seems to be the only room in the house that I can make a sound system work. If we ever have a new house built I have already let Cheryal know that a sound room would be an absolute ...

What is the reason for not wanting the port to fire into the open space? If anything, that should be a plus, no? Please do note that I'm not familiar with KEF porting philosophy. But a lot of speakers, including mine, benefit from getting away from the front wall. Unless of course you want the room gain.
I also see you have a small Rel sub which should help the bottom end enough not to rely on the room gain.

Re: New photos of Randy's system ...

The KEF speakers use a flex tube port which also affects mid range. They have inserts to tune the port if you have to place them too close to the wall, however they feel reflection off the wall is important if I understand what I read correctly. They recommend placement at 500mm (20") or so from the back wall...

They also do not talk about aligning the drivers with your ears but instead recommend placing the speakers on a 18" - 24" stand. My stands currently sit at about 20"... They seem to have a very nice sound stage and the placement of vocalist and instruments appear to be at times above the rear wall. I would not mind getting them a tad higher but they are not bad how they are.

Randy when I had my LS50's I used a 24" stand, made by Sound Anchor, they will actually make and height you want.. I had a 4 post model. What a difference when you have a stand that puts that driver at your listening position. http://soundanchors.com/products/2087/kef-ls50

Re: New photos of Randy's system ...

Thanks Charles. I am really enjoying the system! I think you will like the improvements of the ST-500 mkII over the ST-250. EJ said there is a very marked improvement in the mkIIs. Of course, it will take a long while for the amp to settle in. In the manual it states a 300 hour break in period. EJ told me it is closer to 500 hours for the amplifier to completely gain it's top performance.

You probably started right out with the ST-250 completely broken in by your brother. Tony told me they have had people return pieces thinking there was something wrong since they are bright and a little harsh out of the box. Getting through the break in is essential to really appreciate how good the Wyred equipment is. I am not sure if their amplifiers take a little longer than other companies. It seems higher than most, but I can attest to how much breaking in their equipment takes. But it is well worth giving it the time. I am sure that most people would not believe how much of a marked difference in sound happens over the first 100-200 hours (200-300 on the amplifiers).

Re: New photos of Randy's system ...

I find, especially with Class D, that break in seems to take forever. Even after being off for a while, a good day of use seems to be necessary to bring them back on line. My Nords now are superb, especially for the money spent. They embarrass amps costing many times as much. I'm sure the W4S amps will be great, like mine, given time.

Well I don't know if I would say clobbered the KEF's... would say more refined, extremely accurate, incredible imagining, especially in placement within the sound field. A lot more air around the instruments, but all in the subtleties, not knock your socks off.... but a very refined hand made German speaker for sure! Definitely a step up!!!

Re: New photos of Randy's system ...

I do not know if the loft opening helps or hinders that??? I do know the MC have a deeper sound stage and a more defined image. I always thought that the reflection off the walls behind the speakers were important to a ported speaker....

Randy. Did you try the LS50 on another speaker stands ?

I can understand you preferred the new speakers sounds but way I see this pic I bet the LS50 sounds would better with higher stands too.

Re: New photos of Randy's system ...

The LS50's are a really good speaker and I like them a lot. The MC are a whole other league. I have not heard the KEF Reference 1's (I have heard the Ref 3's). When I mentioned to him that eventually I wanted to get Ref 1's. He said borrow Wolfgang's MC speakers and you will probably not have any desire to go to the Ref's. By the way, has has listened to Ref's a lot, so he is very familiar with them.

The more I listen to them the more I have got to agree. The smoothness and accuracy is startling, the imagining is spectacular. They have the MBL sound characteristics for sure. One of our club members has a full MBL system (absolutely outstanding), and a set of their big boy speakers. No these do not have that anywhere you go in the room they sound exactly the same as his do, but the general sound family is 100% there. Of course his whole system is much more refined (it better be for the $200k + he spent on it). But the family resemblance is there and they are very solid speakers.

Yes, the KEF would be improved slightly by being higher, but not to this level. By the way, these are stands which retail north of $600-$700. Because they match the speaker so much he is giving them to me with the speakers! How could I say no; the speakers are very solid and quite heavy. The stands are quite a bit heavier.

Re: New photos of Randy's system ...

Thank you my friend. I am liking how it is all coming together. Way too much power though (430 WPC, good God, I have the DAC and the Marantz set to like -20 db output so that I can have some low level control on the pre-amp).... I will eventually change out the amplifier, maybe the Statement when it comes out or a tube... I am just a little hesitant about the up keep of tubes... And I keep getting this vinyl itch that is driving me crazy... so I might end up having to pick up a turntable even though I do not have any albums...

Watching you grow your system is inspiring me. It looks like you have settled in on all Marantz!

Re: New photos of Randy's system ...

I really like the Marantz spinner. It is my only Marantz piece, but it is nice. The rest of the equipment is Wyred 4 Sound.

I have been considering their nice turntable (built by clearaudio), but not sure I want to get back into vinyl enough to spend about $2200... figuring the table $1499, phone pre-amp, probably a Vincent that got TAS Editor's Choice that can now be had for $299, and a protection cover ($329... )... so a little over $2100 ....

I think I would probably rather put that couple grand into a step up amplifier at this point...

Re: New photos of Randy's system ...

It is the same room. Yes I flip flopped it to the other side. I do not hear a huge difference in comparison to the loft wall, but a little. A tad more solid even image I would say. I also think it is definitely a tighter more solid bottom end. Most importantly is I can situated the room to have my lazy boy in the proper place and the room is easier to work with. The library portion is more easily accessed and this also opens up some shelving space for CDs ....

Is the outlet your conditioner is plugged into a regular 15 amp or 20 amp line? I am just trying to get an idea of how much amperage you are using to run your system.

Hey Mack, I am not sure. I would have to go to the circuit box and look because I honestly don't know. For what it is worth the house was built new 8.5 years ago....

For what it is worth... there are circuits that are labeled lights for various rooms that are 15 amp and others that are labels for various sections of the house that are 20 amp... so I would soundly say I do not know but would guess 20 amp <shrug>...

Unless you had a 20 amp line specially run to that room, chances are that it is a grounded 15 amp line. Was just wondering! Thanks

Re: New photos of Randy's system ...

Hehe... everyone picks on my poor little REL, but it works it's butt off .... actually does surprisingly well for what it is. Eventually I am gonna have to replace it with a tad better/bigger sub. Jon, who writes for Stereophile was over when I hosted our club meeting a couple weeks ago. He loved the MC speakers but did mention that although the REL was good tonally it was probably the one area that needed an update. Eventually it will get it, but the MC have decent low end on their own so the little extra that the REL adds does help ...

It is a little cutie though isn't it
