Re: New photos of Randy's system ...
A couple new changes, one in place the other on the way...
An additional subwoofer... added a KEF... I know not as elaborate as many suggested here, but a nice improvement... slightly larger driver but not big boomy... I do not like large drivers... and my favorite KEF speakers... and doing KEF tradition of adding nice full size passive!
The second change is on it's way... keeping with my pure sound no flash and not needing narrowly the power of the Ampzilla, a buddy needed that power... his Focals with large bass drivers were taxing his amp... so we are trading out... and I am very excited about this one...
Nelson Pass's personal playground, and an amplifier personally built by him.... the First Watt F6.... pure class A... one reviewer referred to it as the best sounding amplifier he has ever heard!McIntosh C49, MC152, MR85, R778 | T+A DAC 8 DSD | KEF LS50 Meta w/S2, KC62 (x2) | Rega RP8, Ania Pro, NEO PSU | Technics SL-1500C | Audio Technica VM750ML | Hexmat Eclipse, Yellow Bird, Molekula, Molekula Mini | Pro-Ject VC-E | Falcon NW PC Server (Roon Core & HQPlayer) | Microsoft Surface Pro 6 (Roon Controller) | Abyss Diana Phi | Schiit Jotunheim 2 | Astell&Kern SE200 | Oppo BDP105

Re: New photos of Randy's system ...
Hey Charles, certainly there are larger driver speakers and subs that are fantastic. In general I have a preference for smaller, tighter drivers... probably will never own a speaker above 10" driver. The KEF sub is 8" but also has an 8" passive. I have always like the KEF passive drivers.
Really looking forward to the First Watt. I have been intrigued since I first reading about them a year or so ago. Re: New photos of Randy's system ...
The F6 arrived today.... in the manual it states to give it about an hour warmup before critical listening. I heard smoothing out after about 30-45 minutes.
Thoughts... well it is not going to power a block party ... but, as loud as I would ever listen and I still have not quite reached the active range on the STP-SE preampiflier.
But... WOW.... very wide and very stable imagine. Very detailed and open. I can see why one reviewer called it the best sounding amplifier he has ever heard. I think this has just become my standard go to amp and the ARC will be a nice change of pace.
They definitely sound different, both very good and I can't quite determine what the difference is yet... the First Watt definitely has a wider image with more depth. A more stable image. The Audio Research might be just a little smoother and very inviting. Very subtle differences!McIntosh C49, MC152, MR85, R778 | T+A DAC 8 DSD | KEF LS50 Meta w/S2, KC62 (x2) | Rega RP8, Ania Pro, NEO PSU | Technics SL-1500C | Audio Technica VM750ML | Hexmat Eclipse, Yellow Bird, Molekula, Molekula Mini | Pro-Ject VC-E | Falcon NW PC Server (Roon Core & HQPlayer) | Microsoft Surface Pro 6 (Roon Controller) | Abyss Diana Phi | Schiit Jotunheim 2 | Astell&Kern SE200 | Oppo BDP105

Re: New photos of Randy's system ...
A couple friends from our audio club were over yesterday comparing the First Watt and Audio Research amplifiers. Well one preferred the FW and the other the ARC. I am neutral although maybe leaning towards the FW. The one who liked the ARC better is an Audio Research fan/owner from way back, so his heart was with ARC from the get go... and he really liked the VT50.
We all came to a definitely consensuses however that they are both pretty spectacular and fairly close. The ARC may have a little more "air" around it, especially in the highs while the FW probably has a fuller mid range and female vocals especially are startling good. Mid base very much favored the FW. Especially on a Fiona Joy SACD where the lower piano notes just had a more solid bottom residence. And the FW has probably a better and more stable image. Both are extremely good in this regards.
The ARC definitely has more power, but both are able to drive my MC's (which should be a very hard to drive speaker, 85 db, 4 ohm) to very high levels. Honestly, it is a really good problem to have , and a very nice change of pace in amplifiers...McIntosh C49, MC152, MR85, R778 | T+A DAC 8 DSD | KEF LS50 Meta w/S2, KC62 (x2) | Rega RP8, Ania Pro, NEO PSU | Technics SL-1500C | Audio Technica VM750ML | Hexmat Eclipse, Yellow Bird, Molekula, Molekula Mini | Pro-Ject VC-E | Falcon NW PC Server (Roon Core & HQPlayer) | Microsoft Surface Pro 6 (Roon Controller) | Abyss Diana Phi | Schiit Jotunheim 2 | Astell&Kern SE200 | Oppo BDP105

Re: New photos of Randy's system ...
Nice. It appears to be another great amp from Nelson! Because my speakers are considered hard to drive the extra power of the F6, especially into 4 ohm was important to me. You won't be disappointed in the sound quality.

Re: New photos of Randy's system ...
Yupper.... you got it ...
Might be a good idea to move the ARC amp. Was looking at the rack, it will be overflowing with amplifiers .
My current thinking.... the Quicksilver as the mains.... tube monoblocks, 80 - 90 watts depending on tubes, class A, using KT150 (and my Gold Lion KT88 will also work)... the First Watt for SS flavor, and to use if having background music, listening to FM, etc. No use putting hours on tubes in these situations... of course the Woo for headphones.... this leaves the nice classic ARC as the odd man out .... nice beefy little amplifier though... the power switch is a little flaky but does work. EJ said he will fix it up for me ....
Oh, and my gorgeous MC monitors are finding a new home... they will be really enjoyed. I will miss them but I just got to have KEF ....McIntosh C49, MC152, MR85, R778 | T+A DAC 8 DSD | KEF LS50 Meta w/S2, KC62 (x2) | Rega RP8, Ania Pro, NEO PSU | Technics SL-1500C | Audio Technica VM750ML | Hexmat Eclipse, Yellow Bird, Molekula, Molekula Mini | Pro-Ject VC-E | Falcon NW PC Server (Roon Core & HQPlayer) | Microsoft Surface Pro 6 (Roon Controller) | Abyss Diana Phi | Schiit Jotunheim 2 | Astell&Kern SE200 | Oppo BDP105

Re: New photos of Randy's system ...
I have received both the KEF and the Quicksilver amps. The KEF's are breaking in nicely. The Quicksilver's sound great, however one has a slight, but noticeable hum through the speaker when there is no music playing. It does not appear to interfere with the music, but as Mike Sanders from Quicksilver put it (after he listened to the sound over the phone), it will not hurt anything it is just annoying. Still determining the best method of proceeding. Mike states that the amp should be dead quite like the other one is. I would hate to have to send an amp out for service after just receiving it.
Anyway, here are some updated photos. I am really enjoying how the system is coming along. An Audio Club friend came over yesterday and was saying the system resolves the music so much that it was giving him goose bumps!

Re: New photos of Randy's system ...
Looks good Randy. Mike didn't think that either the AT7 or AU7 could be the noisy culprit? Easy enough to find out by swapping one at a time side to side and see if the noise moves. Would be an easy and cheap fix.

Re: New photos of Randy's system ...
Hey Jack, yea I have switched tubes, channels, etc. A friend even brought some other extremely high end power cords over to make sure my Wireworlds were not the issue. The slight hum is definitely the amp. Rob has found the original purchase and the amps are only 2 years old. Therefore they are still under warranty. He has e-mailed Mike Sanders to request service on the one amp. So it is a matter of it working itself out.
They are sweet sounding amps though ...
Dan came over with those power cords yesterday and spent about four hours listening. He was blown away by the amps with the KEF's ....McIntosh C49, MC152, MR85, R778 | T+A DAC 8 DSD | KEF LS50 Meta w/S2, KC62 (x2) | Rega RP8, Ania Pro, NEO PSU | Technics SL-1500C | Audio Technica VM750ML | Hexmat Eclipse, Yellow Bird, Molekula, Molekula Mini | Pro-Ject VC-E | Falcon NW PC Server (Roon Core & HQPlayer) | Microsoft Surface Pro 6 (Roon Controller) | Abyss Diana Phi | Schiit Jotunheim 2 | Astell&Kern SE200 | Oppo BDP105

Re: New photos of Randy's system ...
Mike's a good guy, I'm sure he will get it worked out. Probably just a resistor or cap out of spec. He's not too far from you in Stockton so shouldn't take long.

Randy.......Sure didn't take long to fill that second rack with gear. Good thing you were encouraged to purchase two racks. Your sound system and the new KEF's look excellent.

Re: New photos of Randy's system ...
Well I only have the one KEF sub now. It does great at filling in the very bottom. The KEF's produce a ton of base and really don't need a sub. I think I am going to be putting the ARC and First Watt on the market. Both great amps, but they won't get used a lot moving forward. Especially since I will add a Wyred 4 Sound statement nextGEN when I can convince them to make me one up .... so will end up with the Quicksilver and nextGEN for now.

Re: New photos of Randy's system ...
Yeah, sort of like my setup. The Martin Logan's still play fullrange (well, they're high passed at 16 Hz). The sub is low passed at 40 Hz. The ML's give me 90% of the bass in the system. The JL only kicks in for that last 10%, usually only on pipe organ and some electronic music. And of course, when we watch the occasional movie. Most of the time, it's just sitting idle.
Are you running those R700's only off of the Quicksilver amps or are you bi-amping them? Have you tried them bi-amped?Pass Labs XP-20 | Auralic Altair G1 | Odyssey Audio Stratos Monoblocks | JVC XL-Z411 | Nakamichi DR-1 | Technics SL-1700MK2 | Magnepan 1.7i | SVS PB-1000 Pro x 2

Re: New photos of Randy's system ...
I tried bi-amping with the ARC. Sound was find but thought it was a mismatch. I am thinking about getting some intrrnal bi-wired cables. A couple people have told me it makes a nice difference.

That is the ARC amplifier. The cover is actually off and the view is looking down through the top glass of the stand.

Re: New photos of Randy's system ...
Oh, silly me! It does look really cool set up that way, though. On closer inspection I can now see that it's the glass shelf from the stand. A fine look anyway! Beautiful system and great setup! Glad those QS amps found a new home (I presume since they're no longer in your signature)! I'm enjoying my Rogue Cronus Magnum which replaced them to drive Quad 57's (this amp came in second place in a shootout by Chesky and others for the best amp for Quad's, right behind the ASR Emitter which is exponentially more expensive).
