    Re: My Isolation Room

this used to be my aquarium room. all of my asian arowanas died in 2016 and the room remained idle for a while. I traded the aquarium which cost me $20k for a $5k construction credit from the guy who did the reno. The room was overbuilt when it comes to insulation etc, but the guy abandoned the project midway. I ended up doing some of the finishing jobs. I DIYed the LP rack and the equipment rack. The room is sealed without heating vent. It is about 24lb quiet with the equipments on and music paused. The door is solid core and leaks very little sound at the bottom, which I could seal if I want to. I could play 90 db inside and you can hear very little just outside the door.

this is what it used to be.l

the room is small (17L x 12w x 8H) but it will make do.

Very cool, but what is the function of the 2 stand mount speakers in background? I presume the large floorstanders in foreground are the mains?

    Very nice.

I would have preferred to see something more substantial for the corner bass traps and perhaps some absorption behind the listening chair. Have you measured the room (RTA etc.)? There may be some modal clubbing in the high 60 to 70Hz area.

Out of interest did you try your side panels in the horizontal orientation?

What are the monitor speakers on stands?
Borresen Acoustics Loudspeakers, Borresen Model 01 Compact monitor loudspeakers with Ansuz Darkz T2s Supreme resonance control, Audio Video Manufaktur GmbH (AVM) Inspiration amplifier & streamer, Innuos Zen MKII music server, Ansuz Acoustics cables & accessories. Please visit my system thread hosted on Audioshark for more details. Disclosure: The author is materially connected to Ansuz, Aavik & Borresen Acoustics via friendship with an owner.

yes the S7 pair are the mains. I placed the A1 just to try and burn them in. I got them but have nowhere else to put them, my wife is starting to complain that our small house is starting to fill up with my audio stuff. They will be put on the side when not in use. I don’t really hear adverse effect of having them there.

I have not taken any room measurement but will do it eventually to maximize the potential of the setup. I moved the S7 forward another foot yesterday, the front baffle is exactly at 1/3 of the room length now. I think it improved the mids and the bass. The SVS SB16 Ultras are currently not in use, but will be teamed with the A1’s. I think the room and the setup sound very good now, I am liking what I hear.. I just have to confirm if it actually measure properly. I have REW in my laptop, just have to buy the mic as the one that I have does not work with my laptop now.

I also intend to put more absorbers on the door, I just have to print the pictures and make the frame, similar to what I did on the two pictures of Charlie, our daughter’s beloved Havanese.

Room looks great! Very nice room and system. I would suggest making sure to start your measurement process by finding the optimal spot for the listening position first. Also, why not try to integrate those subs with the big Magico’s? Virtually all systems benefit from properly integrated subs. Just a thought!

    Re: My Isolation Room

almost (except for the USB cable I think) all of the system cabling are DIY. I used to own some exotic cables but my first attempt of DIY cables did so well against them so I decided to go all the way.. Interconnects are Neotech and the AC cords are DH Labs Redwave.. all of them are heavily damped with damping paint and taped tight.. the cords below are my latest batch, the Redwaves, I think they sound better than the Neotechs they replaced.. I am a DIY guy (I also DIYed the from of the aquarium pictured earlier. My wife wanted to hire a finishing carpenter, I said I will do it if she does not like my DIY.. she never even thought of doing so) I think it ads another dimension to the hobby. I also cut my wires according to the length I need, makes it a little easier to manage, and neater to look at. I label my DIY cables so that they don’t look too cheap in my system.

yes, thanks for the suggestion. The subs used to be integrated with the S7 in my previous setup, it was a much bigger room and they worked very well together. I like the SB16 Ultras because you can control it through an app, very easy to fine tune while seated in the listening position.

DIY rack - shelves are 3/4” MDF, the 4 posts are 2x2 alum angle bars which are 1/4” thick, all shelves and alum bars are heavily coated with Silent Running damping paint that converts vibration in heat.. you can actually feel that the materials become more inert after a couple of layers. footers are carriage bolts.

I have to assemble the rack inside the room because it won’t fit the door. I maximized the space available.

this is the wall between the audio room and rest of the house. from inside the room - 5/8 drywall, resilient bar, 1/4 drywall, 2” insulation, 1/2” drywall, 2” insulation then 5/8” drywall.. all glued and screwed.

Very nice room - should be a very nice relaxing alternative to your previous aquarium.

I found the use of a sub with a good crossover properly phase aligned to the mains improved the sound of my system immensely.

Be sure to take the time to enjoy the fruits of your labor.

I kept an aquarium for around 15 yrs, and although I did not reach my personal finish line (breeding them), it was a good run. I had my asian arowana community for 13 yrs, so they’re like my kids. My wife and daughter cried really hard when they found out they died.. we don’t want to go through the same experience again. Big aquariums are actually easier to care for, so lot’s of time to enjoy them.. relaxing too, but in a different way.

agree, properly integrated subs bring huge improvement to the sound.. will try to integrate them.

I use a JL Audio subwoofer and highly recommend if you own one contact their customer support number. They will thoroughly explain exactly how to phase align the subwoofer with their CR-1 crossover.

On another level (not so exotic ) and of course with other brands, but that's exactly what happened to me.
