Ha! My second one is coming tomorrow - supposedly. I was going to only do one, but with the big price increases coming Jan 1 for NAIM, I figured now or never.

The gamechanger within the Statement is the preamp. Some people have made the upgrade just like that and are reporting great results.
I agree fully on Shunyata fit with Naim - the uplift in performance is palpable. Congratulations Mike!

Thank you! I found the 555, then the 500, then the 552 made the biggest difference as I moved from the NDX/252/300 system a piece at a time.

The second PSU for the 555 arrives today. Will be fun to see what it adds.

    Re: Mike's system

There's a guy on the Naim forum (a Brit) who runs an S1 (Statement) preamp and 3 500DR amps active into Naim 800 speakers. So pre, 3 power amps, the crossover, and a power supply (SuperCap) for the crossover. Before he owned the S1 it was a 552 pre which of course has a separate power supply. So yeah - a lot of boxes!

Prior to the current generation of stereo power amps, these guys ran a "six pack" -- six NAP135 power amps for actively tri-amping their Naim speakers.

Late 90's I had a 6 pack running Naim DBLs. A bunch of boxes for sure.

    Mike

I saw on a previous post that you have tried IsoAcoustics Orea Bordeaux footers.

Would you hazard a guess as to how they would work under a Pass Labs X350.8 on the floor? The X350.8 is currently just on the floor.

    Thanks

I don’t recall, but how hot does the amp get on the lower chassis? I would try to get them off the floor with even a wood stand with spikes. I don’t know if the Bordeaux is going to be tall enough. Remember, they go under the chassis, not the feet.

    Re: Mike's system

    Thanks for getting back.

I don't know about the lower chassis but the heat sinks measure 46.2 degrees C when playing.

I was going to place the Bordeaux ie. 4 of them under the feet.

I realise they are meant to go under the chassis but I did try some Indigo's under my preamp feet - I didn't bother taking the feet off - and they did make a difference.

On the minus side, it will probably take 2 people to lift the X 350.8 and then another to try and slide the Bordeaux under the feet. One wrong move and the amp drops and the footer placer could lose his fingers. So I will probably pass.

Mike, have you ever tried driving the Ktema or Accordo Essence speakers with X 0.8 Pass Labs amps?

I am just wondering uf they are a good match.

    Thanks

Perhaps this is better for a separate thread. But yes, we have tried and it’s good, but I prefer something a little more neutral like Luxman/Sim/Hegel since the Accordo’s are already warm enough.

    Mike,

Do you know if the 282 preamp requires external power supplies or can it be powered directly from a NAP300DR?

It requires the little NAPSC box. External power supply (HiCap or SuperCap) is optional with the 282 preamp.

Thanks, but after speaking with Naim you’re both right and wrong, atleast in the configuration I am planning. The small NAPSC does indeed come with the 282, but thats not enough to make it work with a 250 or 300. You need to add either the HiCap or SuperCap before you can make it all work. Certainly the strangest and most confusing system organization I have ever seen.

Yes you're right -- no power amp above the 200 has an internal power supply for a preamp. The NAP 200 has the 4-pin DIN connection that carries power to a preamp; not so on the 250 or 300.

Well, I ordered 5 Naim pieces… had a good chat with Mike. No matter how much I spend myself on gear I still wont be able to get half the exposure that Mike gets, his willingness to honestly and candidly share his opinion is refreshing. Now lets see how long Ill have to wait.

Congrats! What did you go for?

Quick reminder to make sure you leave everything on at all times. Also, it takes at least two weeks of 24 hours/day being on for NAIM pieces for break in. With the digital, turn off ALL unused inputs and outputs using the NAIM app. Turn off the display on the streamer as well.

Shunyata power cords work best with NAIM and always use a super low capacitance speaker cable with naim like NAIM SuperLumina, NAIM NACA5, Chord for NAIM cables or Nordost, among others.

Programming the front inputs on the preamp can be done easily in setup mode, but remember there is a tiny green light on the back of the preamp showing you which input is programmed to which front button (and yes, this can all be changed and customized in setup).

Also, pay careful attention to the back of the amp when connecting speaker cables. It’s reversed from normal amps (left is right and right is left) and yes that means the speaker cables cross at the back of the amp. Goofy naim.

Well I did get the Super Lumina cables as I did read that it matters. My Reference speaker cables are Audioquest Firebirds but they are terminated with spades so that wouldnt work any way.

I had a time crunch so I decided to land right in the middle of the line up… The NDX2, 282, 250 and HiCap. I considered the SuperCap but if the system works out then Ill just jump to the 500 series which makes the SuperCap obsolete. We will see how it compares with my Chord stack and Blades.

That will be great. Just remember: two weeks, 24 hours a day. You won’t believe how much it changes in those 2 weeks. No kidding, at 13 days it will still improve. Turning off displays on the NDX2 and 282 will also help improve the sound.

I bought the DBL's without listening. I know, I know. Didn't really like them any more than the 4 pack into SBL's. I had a couple subs with the SBL's - Naim heresy.

I sure would love some SBL's - I miss them.

Well, got some bad news today. Looks like the NAP250 I've ordered will be terribly underpowered and mismatched with my Blades. Minimum recommended is the 300, or ideally the 500. Oi vey! and here I thought I was just dipping my toe

300 is definitely a nice step up. I think you will find however, that Naim power ratings are woefully underrated.

Sounds right. But I have no specific experience with the Blades. Their sensitivity numbers are decent (KEF says 91dB). But there's a lot more than that.

What's the source of your "bad news?"

That may be the case although the Blades combination of low impedance and multi driver complement will be a serious challenge to the 250’s power supply. It may shut down or go into protection at extended sessions or bass heavier material.

My current Accuphase and Ultima 5 amps are having no issues… but thats expected.

This news is coming to me directly from Naim.

    Re: Mike's system

    Hi!
As a long time Naim user i can confirm that the units should be left on at all time and that it will take a couple of weeks for them to come ‘on song’ when new. After the initial running in my experience is that it will only take about 5 days to get back to full performance after they have been switched off. For Mike and everyone else I have some good news; after 3-5 months there is a marked increase in performance again. This was especially noticable with the DR power supplies.
    Best regards
    Hans

    Re: Mike's system

I finally received the crazy NAIM to RCA cables so I could connect up the subs. To even out the bass in my challenging room, I’m using four B&W subs. They have the auto DSP and blend seamlessly.

    Mike's system

    A few changes:

    - Gone is the NAIM 500 system
    - Added Block Audio SE Monos/SE Pre
    - Added Esoteric Grandioso K1X/PS1. Since I have hundreds of SACD’s and thousands of CD’s, and I play them and buy more every month, this was the best option for me.
    - Added Aurender N30SA (in combo with Aurender ACS10)
    - Added Finite Elemente Pagode Mk2 racks (2), one is HD (heavy duty for the heavy Kronos and K1X). The other is standard.
    - Added Avid Pulsare II Phonostage, waiting on Esoteric E-02 (October production)
    - Added Nordost QNET and QSource with Premium Lemo cable.
    - All new cables. Details below.
    - Changed all 5 dedicated 20 amp circuits to the Block Audio C-Lock SE2 (these have the Furutech GTX-D NCF(R) built in).

With my wife and kids away for the month of June (visiting family in Canada), I spent no less than 100 hours comparing every single cable against every other cable we had in the store, plus others and going back and forth to find the right synergy.

I found IN MY SYSTEM, the IC between the Esoteric Grandioso K1X and the Block SE Preamp to be THE MOST important. I tried AQ Dragon, Valhalla 2, Odin 2, Sigma v2 and several others. When I put the Odin 2 into the system, I had a goosebump moment - and not for exactly the right reason. It was about midnight one night and using ‘River of Tears’ from the latest Clapton Album as one of the test songs and going back and forth all night with this one cable, I put the Odin 2 XLR in and could hear someone breathing, swallowing and thought someone was in the house! I jumped out of my chair, only to realize that it was that Odin 2 cable between the K1X and the Pre bringing unprecedented transparency and resolution.
    - I found the Dragon IC’s to be best between the preamp and amps. I could go into my entire findings, but sometimes I found you could end up with too much of a good thing. Getting the right balance was key.
    - The Block Audio Mains Block SE power cables sounded best on the Block Audio SE amps and Block SE preamp (no surprise).
    - The speaker cables I went with are the Kharma Exquisite. They narrowly beat out the Odin 2 and Dragon.
    - The Shunyata Sigma NRv2 power cables won the day and were best on the phonostage, Esoteric K1X, Aurender, Clock, QSource, QB8, etc.
    - I’m using the Block Audio Dog Block SE power conditioner along with a Nordost QB8 for the peripheral stuff like the turntable power supply and stuff like that. I find the locking mechanism on the power conditioner to work very well since crawling behind the rack would always find me knocking out a power cable or two. With the locking mechanism on the Block power conditioner, everything stayed put and sounded great.
    - For digital, the Shunyata Omega Clock cables were tops. I’m using 50 ohm for the CyberShaft Clock (with separate PSU) and 75 ohm for the Aurender N30SA.
    - For Ethernet, I found the Wireworld Platinum 8 to work best.
    - I’m using COAX (SPDIF) as my main connection from the N30SA, and for that, the Nordost Odin 2 sounded best.
    - As a backup from the N30SA (or for higher res DSD), I found the Wireworld Platinum 8 USB to be best in my system.
    - For phonostage, Shunyata RCA sounded best.
    - For Tape, the Wireworld Platinum 8 XLR sounded great from the Doshi Tape Pre.

NEXT UP: more ISOAcoustics OREA for the N30SA, preamp, etc. I do have the Nordost QPoints for all the key devices. I will get those hooked up this week. They will run off the QSource.

Suffice it to say, I didn’t go with the full loom approach. Mike's system

This again is MY SYSTEM, in MY ROOM and my tastes.

    YMMV.

NEXT UP: more ISOAcoustics GAIA’s for the N30SA, preamp, etc. I do have the Nordost QPoints for all the key devices. I will get those hooked up this week. They will run off the QSource.

Suffice it to say, I didn’t go with the full loom approach. Mike's system

This again is MY SYSTEM, in MY ROOM and my tastes.

    YMMV.

I guess my previous comment was posted before you detailed all the changes. When you have the time and inspiration it would be terrific if you made a video as you did previously discussing the changes outlined in your post. You have a knack for succinctly getting to the “crux of the biscuit” so to speak.

    Enjoy!

Looks like a all new system to me. It's better now i suppose, but it´s possible to have a totally different new sound when the speakers are the same? We "look" to the speakers with other eyes, as if they are others?

I know what you mean. When i bought my Ortofon interconnect i was so excited that i had to try another one in the system. But didn´t work. The sound became a little dark with a slightly less defined and dragged bass. I still have the Ortofon on the source but combined with a Transparent Music Link Plus between the pre and the power.

By the way, It looks terrific (The Kharma are sooo beautiful...)

Don’t your moving guys just love carrying super heavy audio gear up and down your stairs every couple months?

Wow what a departure from your full Naim phase. Looks great Mike, sure would love to hear it.
