    JSQT's System

    Hello all,

I've been a member for nearly a year now and since I got my new speakers delivered this weekend I figured it was a good opportunity to share my system - which I hope has now reached a point where further upgrades will not be that earth-shattering or note-worthy (at least for another 3 months or so, ha).

Here is a gallery of my current system

    https://jsqt.smugmug.com/JSQT-2019-System/n-dqH49k/

The Rivals just delivered yesterday. Greg stopped by on his way back from Capital Audiofest to TN and spent the day/night working with me on the sound (which honestly Greg set within about 20 minutes of us getting them into the room). Still it was a great opportunity to hang out and hear some great tunes through amazing speakers, and get some great insight from such a talented and smart designer like Greg.

Incidentally, these are Bossé Cedar veneered speakers and are the most beautiful speakers I've ever seen. The finish is absolutely hypnotic - pics don't do it justice. There is NO stain on this veneer, it is the actual natural color/grain pattern of the original wood. Only a clear lacquer finish.

The Rivals replace my La Scala IIs which have now moved into my office system with my vintage Luxman amp collection, where they will continue to do an awesome job.

The complete system breakdown is now updated in my signature.

Thanks Jack, yes it was a no-brainer I'm currently still rocking the SVS Soundpath I had because the TWL cables won't deliver until next week. So I still have more to look forward to.

Appreciate it Joe, I have to say the Rivals are simply marvelous - Greg has done an incredible job with these speakers and the fact that they are truly "one of a kind" is the icing on the cake. He threw me for a loop when he offered me an incredible deal on the demo Vittoras he also had loaded in his trailer from CAF. I just couldn't swing the extra $$ at this time, but I have to say I'm not regretting this purchase one bit. I hope more people discover his work as he deserves the business for sure. He is a true enthusiast and master at his craft.

    Jeremy

I think you will enjoy the TWL speaker cables as I do. I also use his power cords and ordered a USB cable from him this morning. Another good to deal with small manufacturer that also allows money back trials if you want to try anything else.

Congrats, Jeremey. Those are great speakers. The Volti Rival/BorderPatrol system at AXPONA 2017 was my favorite among the systems that I heard at that show. I was even contemplating a purchase of these speakers at the time.

    Re: JSQT's System

Updating with new images for this week's changes to the system!

    https://jsqt.smugmug.com/JSQT-Novemb...urge/n-HQpS3H/

I have downsized big-time in the home theater department over the past few days. I'm now selling all of my Monitor Audio Gold speakers and moving my gorgeous 70th anniversary Heresy IIIs in for a simple 2.2 channel home theater system.

Since eliminating that big black box of a center speaker on my console, I had some extra room to set up both of my preamps and bought a 2" maple block to set the Luxman tube amp on.

I feel like I lost 30 pounds with this recent changeup!

Thanks Joe! It is sounding better than ever now, I just started using AQ XLRs from the Hugo TT2 into the Rhumba Extreme so I could keep my Wireworld RCAs permanently running into the CL-40 for easy preamp swapping. And Ohno RCAs from the pre into the MQ88-uSE. Just waiting now for the TWL speaker cables. All of the cable swapping today has really cleaned up the overall sound.

Really nice room and setup, pics are great as well as the gear. Love seeing the BL there. I bet the synergy between the 3 main pieces are awesome.

Thanks Brian - yes it is great to be able to alternate between the Rhumba Extreme and the CL40. As I mentioned in another post, they are both VERY different sounds. I would say I listen to the Rhumba Extreme about 80% of the time. But on some jazz songs, Chick Corea, Pat Metheny (especially his solo acoustic covers record "What It's All About") that CL40 has some kind of magic - it's nowhere near as refined as the BL but it just jumps into the room like a hologram. The synergy has definitely been a long work in progress. I've gone through tons of equipment to get to where I am now, and each component has to either get me closer to the SOUND I'm ultimately chasing, and if it doesn't work in the system, it isn't the right piece of equipment. I'd say at this point I'm very nearly there.

    Re: JSQT's System

    Thanks Mike & Mike

I need to figure out a way to keep this system exactly as it is, because it sounds amazing. I found myself today almost ready to pull the trigger on the very last remaining MQ-88uSE in the Luxman warehouse to run monos and then sat down to listen to what I had and say what the hell am I thinking, LOL. Not to say it's end game... but I really need to take a breather and enjoy what I have.

Funny story though, the TWL speaker cables arrived today and my wife was reading the insert mailing from Pete. "Did you read this??" she said. "It says here you have to keep them off the floor! How are you going to elevate them? You can't use them on the floor can you? And you have to separate them by at least 6 inches from your other wires - they aren't parallel with any other cables are they?"

If you don't already have cable risers and want something that is cheap yet effective go to Lowes and look for the rebar chairs. Fifty cents a piece.

    Re: JSQT's System

I hope for my wallet's sake my system has reached its "final" form for a long time after the addition of a second Luxman MQ-88uSE this weekend. I've bridged both Luxmans into mono configuration, and it is clear there is an imbalance of "burn in" at this point between the two. I have about 300 hours on the first unit, and the second is brand new. Tubes and caps need to settle in, as well as the new Transparent power cable. I should have a good idea of how things truly SHOULD sound in a couple of weeks or so.

In the meantime, I've updated a new gallery with the FINAL version of the system and bringing 2019 to a close!

    Check it out here:

Thanks guys, it is sounding great this morning.

Funny thing is for the past 36 hours I've been listening to a lot of jazz, piano, and singer/songwriter stuff. But this morning I queued up a ton of Zeppelin, Robert Plant's solo stuff, INXS' Kick, etc and it's clear how much the extra power contributes to the heft of the sound. Massive kick drum & stacked background vocals have a wall of presence. Snare drums have tactile impact. Electric guitar is more muscular.

Everything is bigger, and as we all know, bigger is better.
