Re: Chops' Current System Pics ....

So I was just playing this album Saturday afternoon. It's not the best recording of this piece, but it's not bad either. (BTW, I played this piece back when I was in orchestra, 1st chair bass, and loved it).

Anyway, so I was playing this piece this past Saturday afternoon through my Quad Artera Pre preamp, and was really cranking it by the 4th track.

    Track 4: Maestoso - Allegro

Bass from the pipe organ rumbling at full tutti, orchestra at full tilt, brass, winds and percussions blasting, and I was happy and the system was sounding pretty darn good! I had a big ol' smile on my chops!

Well... I just did it again today, literally moments ago, only this time with the Pass XP-20 in the chain. This is the first time I really opened up the taps on the XP-20, all the way up to "68" on the volume!

Let me tell you, it was a totally different experience! A whole lot more visceral, a lot more tactile, a sense of a much larger venue, more air and space and dimension between the instruments. There's more texture and inner detail throughout. Stage width and depth are greater.

And this is with the XP-20 being on for roughly 30 hours straight so far. Anther 20 to 30 hours might improve things a little more. Who knows. It was packed up for around 3 to 4 weeks, so it may have some "waking up" to do again.

Not to sidetrack because this post is about the improvements the Pass XP-20 brings to my system, but I have to say again how impressed I am with this old Emotiva XPA-2 Gen 2 amp of mine as well. This is three different times now that I have hear this amp scale up with the upgrades I have made upstream.

There's a lot better amps out there, I know. But for what it is and what it's capable of doing is pretty darn amazing. This is a good thing. This will allow me to be happy to hold onto this amp for a while longer and save up at my leisure for an amp or amps that will truly take the system up a few more notches.

More to come, I'm sure.

Re: Chops' Current System Pics ....

Here's some updated pics of my system. Within the past month, I have upgraded my Hisense 65" LED TV to a Samsung 75" QN85B Neo QLED TV, upgraded the Cambridge Audio CXN V2 to an Auralic Altair G1, and lastly just last weekend, upgraded the Quad Artera preamp to a Pass Labs XP-20.

All three are vast improvements over the units they replaced, most importantly the Auralic and Pass. Wow!

Thank you sir! Though I couldn't help with the cats. I had just got done vacuuming the house and this room, so they were all where I wasn't. LOL

One of the mains reasons I wanted to get the Pass XP-20... It has an honest "Tape Loop"! I just got the analog side of the system connected to it.

A spicy pair of custom Odyssey Audio Stratos monoblocks for the Maggies!

Even Sir Bentley already approves of them!

And yes, I'm running them through a heavy duty extension cable my father made many many years ago. Stupid ground issues in this room/house (not 60Hz hum, but an annoying buzz). This is just going to put the dedicated 20amp runs to this room to the top of the priority list for this coming fall.

AJ, this time you can't give me negative points for no kitties in the pics. LOL

It amazes me how these amps alone make the Maggies and subwoofers sound larger and stronger. These amps also seem to make the integration between the Maggies and subs that much better as well. Should be even better once I get some dedicated 20amp lines in this room.

I can't believe you gave up a stack of Schiit for Pass and Odyssey
I am not surprised these amps sound good with Maggies. High Current and somehow created with Bass in mind. I like that the internal wiring was done with Groneburg Cabling in my Stratos+. I bought a set of the GB ICs at the same time as the amp but used them to tame a bright system.

Yeah, I had a lot of Schiit back in the day. LOL Speaking of that, I had my Khartago Kismet when the very first Schiit Bifrost came out, which I also had at the time.

These amps have certainly "beefed up" the bass and upper bass of the Maggies for sure, which is most likely why they now seem to integrate better with the subs, which I still have crossed over at 37 Hz (the Maggies are playing fullrange). And with that heavy duty damping factor of these amps, the bass the Maggies are putting out now is more detailed and articulate with a healthy bit of punch.

These Stratos amps also have the Groneburg Quattro Reference/TS Premium cabling throughout, as well as many Symphonic Line caps everywhere, tweaked "SE" boards, and a few more goodies including the really nice WBT Topline RCA's and binding posts out back.

Make-shift amp stands utilizing a couple shelves from my old audio rack and those white quartz slabs I had made some years ago. Just something to get them off the floor. I was going to buy a couple of Pangea amp stands to match the two audio racks I already have, but I think I want to go with something better, so these will work for now.

And my little music/audio buddy still approves!

    Thank you!

I believe my father purchased that turntable in Manhattan (his office was on the 51st floor of the Empire State Building). We lived in East Hartford, CT at the time. That table went from there to Jacksonville, FL, then to Lakeland, FL, then to Niagara Falls, NY, back to Lakeland, then to St Petersburg, FL, back to Lakeland again, and now in Winter Haven.

It has never skipped a beat and the ONLY two repairs done to it was replacing the old auto tonearm return belt about 6 years ago, and about 4 years before that, I replaced/upgraded the stock RCA connectors because one of the channels started an intermittent issue which was in the stock connector.

I'm very grateful that I have been able to make such significant upgrades to this system in the past year. And of course, the kitties are a necessity for proper music reproduction and relaxation.

Nothing has changed in the system, except a little subwoofer and Maggie placement tweaking here and there. Other than that, the gear has all remained the same and I plan on keeping it that way. I have zero complaints with this system and have no reason to look for upgrades. Well... I do want to eventually do Danny Richie's (GR-Research) crossover upgrades on the Maggies. That will easily make these 1.7i's blow away Magnepan's own way overpriced 1.7x variant.

Thank you, sir. It's certainly taken a spell to get this system to where it is now.

I absolutely love that XP-20. Like the rest of the system, it stays on 24/7 and there's always something playing through the system throughout the day and night, even when I'm at work. I've had zero issues with this system. Like you said, it's bullet proof.

Other than the GR-Research X-Statik's, yes. I ran the X-Statik's for around 5 years straight until I started swapping loudspeakers again, until of course I landed on these Maggies. The Maggies aren't going anywhere.

    Speaking of the X-Statik's...

Now that I have the entire house all to myself (kicked the ex and her dumb son out a few months back), I pulled out my old faithful AV123 (GR-Research) X-Statik's with their fully upgraded crossovers and No-Rez, the Cambridge Audio CXN (V2) that I only used for a couple months before upgrading to the Auralic Altair G1 in the main system, the old faithful APC H15 that I've had for years, and a little S.M.S.L AO200 integrated amp (50w x 2 @ 8 ohms).

I got this little setup running in the master bedroom. Man, I forgot how good these X-Statik's sound tonality wise and how they image with a deep and wide sound stage. Will definitely be doing some tweaking as time goes on.

Re: Chops' Current System Pics ....

I've had David Gilmour's Live at Pompeii playing since yesterday morning, and I have to say, things are sounding better. Treble is still airy, but smoother than a few days ago, midrange and mid-bass is fuller and more present, and the bass has opened up with a bit more "oomph" while still being tight and punchy. The sound stage has also opened up more with great depth and width. Quite surprising considering the X-Statik's are being powered by this little SMSL amp (no tone controls used either).

Part of this might also be due to the electronics burning in as well. I know the Cambridge streamer has been sitting for well over a year, the little integrated for more than that I think, and all of those Maze cables for a couple of years. Can't forget the old Mojo Audio 8AWG cross helix vintage Western Electric power cord that's powering the entire system through the APC.

Re: Chops' Current System Pics ....

Here's a major switch-up to my normal system... Chinese knock-off clone stuff!

A BRZ Hifi Mark Levinson JC-2 preamp clone, Tara Labs locking RCA ISM Onboard interconnect clones, Tara Labs The One power cable clones, and even a single Kharma power cable clone. Clone stuff one of my brothers likes playing around with just for fun in one of his systems.

The only REAL piece of kit here other than the streamer, conditioner and speakers is the NuPrime STA-9 amp. This is one of the two that I sold years ago to one of my other brothers. I now have both of them back (borrowing them) for a bit so I can play around with gear and such in this room/system.

Surprisingly, the preamp is rather solid and heavy, gets rather warm considering it's supposed to be running in Class A. It's a stout unit. And shockingly, all of the cables are quite decent and of actual quality. They sure do have all the details done down to a "T", that's for sure.

The important thing here is, the sound has vastly improved over the little SMSL AO200 integrated amp. An even deeper and wider sound stage, a lot more focused imaging, deeper, tighter, harder hitting, a lot better controlled bass, a fuller midrange, and a smoother yet still extended top end.

Of course, I'm sure 90% is due to the NuPrime amp alone. Though I do remember my brother swapping out a Rotel RC-1572 MkII preamp for this BRZ JC-2 clone and this little preamp sounding considerably better. Just an overall more refined sound throughout. And that's what I'm hearing now, so who knows.

    Anywho, some pics...

Now running a full loom of Chinese clone cables of Tara Labs power cables and interconnects, a couple of Kharma power cables, all very well built and do power cable things very well. The only "REAL" power cable in the mix is the Pangea AC-9 MkII that uses actual Cardas Grade One copper. That's like a $300 cable. I'm still using the Maze Audio 9awg Ref 4 braided speaker cables which are just fine.

Also running both NuPrime STA-9 amps in bridge mono mode. And I also have another Pangea Volcan audio rack that I need to get over to the house so I can get that darn dresser out of here and put it in the spare bedroom. The rack is actually made from leftover parts from the four Volcan racks I purchased 7 years ago when Hurricane Irma was headed our way.

Over time, I'll start getting back into designing and building some large format open baffle loudspeakers and subwoofers.

Do you think it’s a good idea to be supporting theft of intellectual property?

I think theft of any kind is wrong. Guys like Matthew Bond (formerly) of Tara Labs pour their heart and soul into their products. Maybe if you spoke with Matthew, you would have felt different before purchasing.

Just like the knock off Nordost cables someone let us try, there is no comparison with the real thing.

Known counterfeit gear, especially if it is clearly identified within the post and most especially if it is being extolled as a viable alternative to real gear, should not be allowed to be posted on the site.

Definitely agree...the brand name rip-off labeling adds insult to injury.
