    Brodricj's system

G'day from the west coast down under and a belated introduction to the Audioshark community.
I've been here a while but haven't until this point contributed much by way of presenting my own system. More so because it's being an ongoing work in progress. Until now that is with my most recent addition being the YG Acoustics Rack 1.4. My dealer has been bugging me for years saying my system is only missing one thing, and that was the rack. Well, I bought it six months ago and finally got around to installing it today. My system has been down all that time whilst undergoing a DIY home renovation.
    Anyway, here it is.
The heart of the system is Halcro monoblock powered Magico with Esoteric as the source. It's a dual purpose music and home theater in a dedicated acoustically treated small space for one. The home theater side is capable but only occupies about 10% of the time. Music is my focus. The home theater consists of a 24TB Kaleidescape server and several players throughout the house. The HT processor is a Krell Foundation 7.1. JVC faux-4K video projector to a 92" Stewart Greyhawk RS Electriscreen. It is routed via my Halcro pre-amp HT bypass so the main speakers are used for both music and movies. The center channel speaker is a Magico ACC and the subwoofer is a Magico S-Sub. The ACC speaker stand is a DIY work in progress so I'm just using a table to sit the speaker on for the time being. All the movie content is loaded on the 24TB Kaleidescape server with all BR physical discs stored in the 320 disc vault for playback verification. There is so much content on the system I could never watch it all in a lifetime. I've owned the Kaleidescape for about 15 years, upgrading over time as new models come out. Unfortunately here in Australia we a locked out of the Kaleidescape digital download service, so my video maxes out at 1080P. I did have a Lumagen Radiance Pro video processor for a few years but I sold it to finance other things.
The music system comprises an Esoteric Grandioso SACD/CD transport, Esoteric N-01 streamer/DAC, Esoteric G-02X master clock generator, Halcro dm8 pre-amp and my precious babies Magico M3 speakers. I ordered the M3's on standard M-feet spikes but eventually upgraded to Mpods. I had previous experience with these Magico pod thingies as My Q3's were on S-pods and I also owned two sets of Q-pods. The power amps are Halcro dm88 monoblocks. Power comes via a Shunyata Research Denali and a PS Audio P3 power plant. All cables are Shunyata Sigma and Crystal Cable Ultra Diamond. The home network is all Pakedge router/switches/wifi etc. All the important electronics sit on Critical Mass Center Stage 2 footers.
Prior to buying the Magico M3's I owned Magico Q3 (which I still have), Magico S3, Wilson Sophia v3, Coincident Technology Pure Reference Extreme, and Definitive Technology BP10 (which I also still have). I have also owned a lot of PS Audio gear over the years but all of it broke down sooner or later and I rate it as junk and sold the lot, except for the Power Plant P3 which I eventually hope to upgrade to another Shunyata power conditioner.
All my music CD's are also stored on the Kaleidescape system which can't be beaten for convenience and utility. The Kaleidescape player is also connected to the N-01 so I have the choice of playback from the server or I can spin the physical disc in the Grandioso Transport.
My final upgrade path is Esoteric Grandioso D1X mono DAC's and as I mentioned before another Shunyata power conditioner. I bought two Shunyata Sigma clock-50 cables in anticipation of the D1X coming but I ended up putting that money towards the YG rack as a higher priority. With the D1X and a new Shunyata I'll be complete. I subscribe to Spotify pemium and for sound quality it comes pretty close to playing the CD. If I discover new music on Spotify I like I'll buy the CD, so I've done a lot of A/B'ing between CD and Spotify. If I didn't have the Grandioso spinner I'd be happy just listening to Spotify exclusively. No plans to upgrade the HT, that JVC-DLA projector and the Krell processor just blow me away every time. I don't turn my gear over very often, I buy everything new and tend to keep it for a long time.
    Thanks for reading.

    Excellent!

One suggestion - if you have not already done this - when listening to music, try leaving your HT amps on, but with the volume turned down completely. This will keep the drivers of your surrounds & center speaker in place, unable to flop around in response to your music. This should result in better clarity, better dynamics and tone, as well as a more musically involving listening experience.

As a former Lucasfilm-certified HT designer, that simple (and free) adjustment created better musical listening experiences for all of my clients.

I became known to this fact and subsequently pulled out the AV portion - it’s amazing what occurs when other speakers are in the room.

No. I suspect any benefits of the isolation in the rack are probably being neutered by the CS2 footers under the electronics (the pre-amp, transport, transport power supply and DAC all sit on CS2's). The CS2 were doing their thing before the YG rack came along.

I think you pay 20% tax in the EU, right?
In Australia we pay 10% tax, and the national Magico distributor tries to keep local pricing close to parity with US MSRP (to his credit).

great system brodricj, I'll bet it sounds great.

I see you have the pre amp on top of the PS audio, even with the CS2 footers, I think the YG Acoustics rack will work better with the pre amp directly on it.
I have an older type PS Audio PPP (only use it for the TV and TV tuner), if the P3 is anything like it, it is a source of vibration (large trafo)

    Re: Brodricj's system

Exactly right. Unfortunately when I assembled the rack I misjudged the required shelf spacing. The Halcro pre-amp was supposed to sit on the top shelf by itself, and the P3 was supposed to be on the bottom shelf with the Esoteric power supply. When the P3 didn't fit where I had intended it to go I couldn't be bothered unraveling all the work and starting again. To reposition a rack shelf all components must come out, then you must remove one leg, reposition a shelf and do it all up again. To do all that takes at least an hour. The assembly of a YG rack is very user unfriendly. I just wanted it up and running so I had to revert to a plan B. When time permits I will revert back to plan A. I'm considering buying a pair of YG Rack 1.1 amp stands for my Halcro power amps.

    Re: Brodricj's system

The rack is definitely soaking up the vibration before it gets to the shelf (the shelf comes in two parts sandwiched between gooey rubbery pucks, the number of pucks depends on the weight on the shelf). Why I say that is my Philips Pronto Pro sits in its charging cradle on top of the Halcro pre-amp. The Pronto has a very sensitive motion sensor to wake it up when you pick it up. When I'm playing music the Pronto will wake itself up from time-time due to vibration from the music. In the six hours of so that the Pronto has been sitting on the pre-amp sitting on the rack shelf it hasn't woken up once. The vibration which normally wakes it up just isn't getting through.

Something doesn’t sound right with that many units. I do recall an amplifier manufacturer running into issues like you mention in Australia and want to say it was something with the transformer that had to be changed.

    Re: Brodricj's system

If you follow the PS Audio forums you'll find many users of power plants in export markets have had reliability issues for years and years. The US market version seems to be far more reliable if forum feedback is a valid indicator.

No I haven't. Something worth trying. If the rack makes the CS2 redundant no point keeping them.

My PPP must be 15 years old now, most of that time it has only been used on my TV equipment, have to say it does give a better picture.
After the first install it started to make a loud resonating noice, found out it was the bottom plate, I could fix it with soft vibration footers under the unit. (but that was not a good start off course) For the rest it has never given me any problems, even the display is still working correctly, I will keep it till it "gives up" and probably replace it with an Ansuz power distributor.

    Re: Brodricj's system

I'm sure stuff leaves the PS factory without being checked properly. Screws don't unscrew themselves and firmware loads don't corrupt themselves during shipping. And as for that customer who received a brand new BHK300 with a BHK250 face plate; well, that just proves the point even if you take all my data points out of the equation. To get 15 years out of a PPP is pretty good going for a PS product however.

    Re: Brodricj's system

New YG Acoustics Rack 1.1 amp stands just arrived. Unfortunately as shipped ex factory they can only carry 37.5 kg maximum amp weight. Need to order extra isolators for anything heavier, which for my Halcro monoblock amps means I need 10 extra shelf isolators. I mean, WTF is YG thinking!!! Maybe they expect most owners will have puny little triode tube amps and not big heavy solid state mono blocks. In the meantime I'm using isolators from the other amp stand so I can at least get one amp on the stand.

Maybe they expect most owners will have puny little triode tube amps and not big heavy solid state mono blocks. In the meantime I'm using isolators from the other amp stand so I can at least get one amp on the stand.

YG speakers need amplifiers with a lot of power so I assume that means heavy amplifiers. I'm surprised that their amp stands are not designed with this in mind as a default or that they would ship them out without having specified the amp load for which they are designed. Perhaps I am missing something.

Anyway, a little disappointing to receive a new toy but can't use it yet. Need to order extra isolators so the shelf can be properly configured for the weight of my amps.

    That’s nuts.

Lucky then I don't have a D'Agostino Relentless. One of those exceeds the YG amp stand weight limit of 97.4 kg. And by a lot.

Okaaaay, at $5,800 each I don't think that's gonna happen.
