Ken. I think there is also room for a Lampizator. You are welcome to come and hear my Big 7 with the WE 300b tubes I just put in.

That's not fair Bruce! There's Lampi and then there is Lampi with Western Electric. They aren't the same thing! Alpinist (Ken) - how is your new system?

really classy looking speakers. interesting how close they are to walls. what is the piece on the bottom left ? you are using Mac mini for computer audio? side note i am auditioning cardas clear IC from cable co. burning in; tonight will be around 50 hours. but last night listening just ok. lots of bass and not well controlled. midrange nice. uppers a bit bright and voices lower and deeper back in soundstage. timbers were out on loan so will try those when available.

    Ed,

It's an Audience AR6-TSSOX power conditioner. Yes, I'm still running the Mac Mini for computer audio but I spin a lot of CDs and SACDs with my K-01X player. I'm eventually planning on getting a music server but the Mac Mini is surprisingly good with the WW Platinum 7 USB cable.

Re: Alpinist (Ken) - how is your new system?

I bit the bullet again and ordered some matching Vandersteen M7-HPA monoblock amplifiers for my Vandersteen 7 MkII speakers. These are some very special sounding amps that should produce tremendous synergy with my speakers.

Thanks Leroy!! The initial word is 2 - 3 months. After seeing the build quality and complexity of these beasts, I understand why. They are hewn out of solid billets of aluminum, all active circuitry is mounted on a floating truss, they are liquid cooled to optimize the operating temperature of the output transistors and they have ten separate power supplies. The amps weigh a hefty 120 pounds each.

Thanks Mike! I think the decision to go with the Vandersteen monoblocks is key to getting the fullest potential out of the speakers. I think the remaining pieces shouldn't be too difficult.

My two cents: go REF6. Performance is reportedly very very close. One box instead of two. Save the difference in funds for something else.

    Hi Mike,

Tough decision for sure. The REF6 offers tremendous performance at a reasonable price. I've heard it several times with the Vandy 7's and I loved it every time. But for some reason, I just can't get past its looks...pretty silly, huh? Otherwise, I would have bought one already. The REF 10 is total eye candy in my opinion.

    Hi Andy,

You crack me up! But seriously, the Pass XS Pre is world class. But the Vandy 7's love tubes, so I'll probably be sticking with a tube preamp. I don't think I can go wrong with either the REF 6 or 10. I bet the Aesthetix Metis will be great too when it comes out in the Fall.

You know, a lot of folks love the retro look of the REF6. I showed a photo to a friend of mine and he said it looks awesome. I think I just don't like retro styling in general, not just on audio equipment but for anything. Maybe it will grow on me but it hasn't so far.

    Hello Ken,

the Raidho was not the "right" way.....vandersteen is sure much better. (of course my taste)

The ARC is not so good as write. ARC is only a brand name and not performance!!! pre & ampli ARC is the last choice in your great system!

A Convergent preampli will be 1000% better. if you search tube pre look beyond.

Sorry but really I dont understand what you (and other members) see into the ARC product!

We'll respectfully agree to disagree. The ARC REF6 preamp sounded absolutely awesome in both the Vandersteen M7-HPA mono amp/Vandersteen 7 MkII speaker system and the Aesthetix Atlas mono amp/Vandersteen 7 MkII speaker system I auditioned. The sound was neutral with tube finesse, dynamic and supremely musical. I haven't auditioned the REF10 preamp yet but I will soon.

Re: Alpinist (Ken) - how is your new system?

There is a reason the Ref10 is the top of the heap... Even with the approaching sound quality of the 6, the separate power supply of the Ref10 yields refinement, nuance, and "oompf" that separates it from the 6. Not by stunning amounts, but in this hobby that small % delta is often what we yearn for if we know it is available.

Well stated... If one has the budget and the rack real estate the Ref 10 is surely a great choice. I opted for the Ref 6 as I only wanted one chassis and am very satisfied with its performance.

    Bob,

I agree with all of your points. If the REF6 is 90% of the REF10, like most are saying, that makes the REF6 an incredible deal. However, it also makes getting the REF10 a 10% improvement, which is a pretty substantial improvement in the world of high-end audio. I found a store where I'm going to do a direct A/B comparison of the REF6 and REF10 next weekend. That will be the determining factor.

    Ken

:-) Boy are you correct about that! Listening to it as I type and it's glorious. No doubt the Ref 10 will be as well... Have a great holiday weekend and enjoy that amazing system of yours Ken!

Thanks Andy! I can only imagine how great the XS Pre sounds in your system. A true reference component if there ever was one.

Once they're fully warmed up, the Soulution 520/501 preamp/amp combo sounds really outstanding with the Vandy 7 MkII speakers. Since the 501 amps are heavily biased into Class A (first 20 watts), they need a couple hours of warm-up to really hit their stride. But when it happens, they sound pretty amazing. Sweet sounding treble and midrange with incredibly fast and tight bass.

I can't wait to get the Vandy M7-HPA monoblocks and an ARC REF6 or REF10 in here to hear what they can do. I guess I'm going organic! Chick peas, kale and bok choy will be next.

    Have a wonderful holiday!

    Hi Ken,
After comparing the REF10 to REF6, did you make a decision? To your ears, what were the major differences and/or similarities?

    Thanks,

    Hi Duke,

I definitely prefer the REF10 over the REF6. I'll transfer my ARC posts on WBF to the ARC thread on AS.

    Hi Paul,

Still waiting for the amps to be completed, burned in and shipped. Richard Vandersteen likes to burn them in for two weeks after they're finished to ensure everything is working right and they sound optimal. I should hopefully have them in another week or two.

    Thanks,
    Ken

I just talked to Richard Vandersteen and my Vandersteen M7-HPA mono amps are shipping tomorrow. Richard said he burned them in for three full weeks with absolutely no issues. I am pretty psyched!

My Vandersteen M7-HPA mono amps will be arriving at the dealer this week. I'm having a consultation with an audiophile electrician tomorrow. I'm getting two dedicated 20 amp lines with wall power switches.

    Hi Mike,

I think the amps are due to arrive at my dealer tomorrow. I'm getting two dedicated 20 amp lines installed on Monday with wall power switches that when turned off will fully disengage any connection. I'm also getting two Audioquest Edison NRG outlets:

    http://www.audioquest.com/power_acc/...-nrg-edison-20

The Vandersteen M7-HPA mono amps will probably be installed next Friday. The Model 7 MkII speakers' 11-band equalization on its subwoofers will be tuned at that time to my room, based on the Vandersteen monoblocks, an ARC REF 6 preamp and either an ARC REF CD-9 or my K-01X as the source. Exciting times!

    Best,
    Ken
