The 7s and the Ref 250s sounded mighty sweet at THE Show last year...plus Richard is still pretty involved with every set of 7s they churn out. Only thing is the longer lead times.

  11. #11
Rumor has it he is working on 9's but that might be years. He personally told me if you are willing to deal with tubes the AR ref are tops with the 5a's and 7's. he likes the mxr's for ss.

Congratulations on the Ref 250's You're gonna love them, especially with the Ref 10. Now all you need is some really fantastic speakers.

Mike....Can't wait to hear what you think. Only have about 40 hours on the REF 150. What a special piece, along with the REF 5SE. Beyond my wildest dreams.

I love Vandersteens. I owned a pair of Quatros when they first came out and am very familiar with the 5As and 5A Carbons. That is a speaker I could hold onto for a long time. Someday.

TODAY is the day Doug! I'm not leaving the house for anything! I'll be carrying my old amp (Classe CA-2300) back downstairs to the family room system to make room for my two new babies.

I can't imagine how good that system will sound! Now about those speakers...

Which reminds me of the first time I heard the REF250's. The dealer had just gotten them in. They were paired with a REF5 and some Wilson Maxx 2's. The volume was very low, maybe 40-50 db range since they were being broken in, and the sound was amazing. The detail at such a low volume was really something. Have you considered Wilson's Mike?

Yes, the new Alexia's. I called my local dealer and he has no plans to bring in anything above the Sasha's. Crazy!

It's madness how quickly we'll drop/rearrange our schedules (business & personal) just to accommodate getting gear on time or early

    Sadly...no cure exists.

Oh yes. And, staring blankly at your rack imagining where the new stuff will go and how it will affect the rest of your stuff.

Oh, don't worry! I will. I am dreading putting in the 9,875 tubes though! With as many tubes as the REF 250's have, you might actually be able to watch the temperature of the State of Florida rise - minute by minute.

They arrived a little over 5 hours ago. They are much larger than I had expected and really, quite gorgeous. I put them on and instantly knew these were very special amps. The mid range and highs are incredibly sweet. They are very musical. That's the first thing that came to my mind. How real and musical they sound. The bass is a tad less pronounced than the Classe, but I think that will improve as the remaining 595 hours of break in take hold.

    Here's a couple of pics:

Thanks Joe. These amps are woefully woefully woefully underrated. I'm getting 103db at 1 meter with 2.5 watts. That's madness.

Going from memory is tough, but I would say they have a perfect midrange and highs. The bass is fast, but not as pronounced as I would like (I think that will improve with break in). Even as I've been listening now for several hours, it has improved. Don't get me wrong, these are amazing amps. They sound like a great mixture of solid state (speed) and tube (midrange warmth and sweet sweet highs).

As to your question: my first thought was, these are the amps Kevin (bzr) should audition.

Lookin' good. They are monsters for sure Mike. 600 hours! I'm glad I buy my gear used! Are they going with KT120's with the REF250's?

Indeed. Monster tubes in monster amps. I just can't believe their power reserves.

Glad they're meeting your expectations so far Mike! The break-in should improve bass and you always have different cables should you not be 100% satisfied. Wow, I'd love to hear them paired with your Ref 10...it must be amazing

You're right Mike. I'm also using the stock PC's until I decide what to buy. Thinking Shunyata Cobra's.

Don't go anything under Ananconda, trust me, I've heard them.

I've also heard the ref 5se & the ref150, with 20.7's & the DeVore Orangutans, they were really good, about as good as it could be considering, almost as good as what I have........ stay tuned.

    Congrats Mike!
I'd suggest anaconda CX PCs if you can find them. Excellent performance and substantially cheaper than current Ztron Anacondas.
    Have fun!
