I’m assuming Triode mode works better with more intimate music where the focus is vocals, instrumental timbres and textures, and ultralinear is more appropriate for music requiring more bass depth and control, like orchestral or hard charging rock??
I can’t say yet. Too early. Triode mode is intoxicating. I’m in the store on a Sunday. Can’t stop listening. Must go home!

It’s great to have options. Ultralinear would be great for classical I’m sure.

So Mike, how're you getting on with the 160M's—as they evolve are you still transfixed? Better than GS150? Better than REF250SE? Have you slept?

Oh man, they are fabulous. Triode mode is soooooooooo delicious. Way better than GS150, REF250SE. They have this sweet sound with amazing definition and layering of sound. I’m at 90 hours I think.

The 160M’s in Triode mode have an intoxicating, 300b SET like sweetness. In Ultralinear mode, they sound like the 250SE’s.

Yes. They are breaking in beautifully. I cannot believe how advanced these are sonically over my GS150. The linearity, clarity, microdetail retrieval and sweetness is intoxicating. The soundstage is expanding as they break in.

When I talked to Dave Gordon from ARC at RMAF a few years ago, I told him the Ref 6 and Ref 75 didn't need 600 hours of break in time to sound great. Dave agreed and said ARC was going to change the 600 hour reminder they place in the box of their gear. Apparently they haven't done that yet. People see this piece of paper and assume its gospel it will take 600 hours of break in time before their new ARC gear sounds its best. Many people literally can't enjoy their new gear until they know they have put 600 hours on it.

    Re: Audio Research 160M

I’ve owned quite a few ARC components. Always enjoyed the break in journey and never worried too much about the 600 hrs. Also, to me the journey meant that, with time, the quality if the music reproduction would continue to improve.

To me, the magic number has been around 300 hrs. Not that before 300 hrs the system sounded bad, it’s just that it got better!

    Anyway, it’s all about music.

With these, they sounded superb out of the box and have only improved. I think their amps are linear in terms of break in. The preamps can yo-yo a bit during break in.

    Mike

I am very impressed with my ARC equipment- it possibly gives me the best 3d sound I have ever had.

Despite my desire to up the game to something better I just cannot reconcile myself with the look and price of the M160.

Would it be wise to add 25% to the M160M price tag and explore Dan's M400 mono-blocks?

    Just wondering..

Have you seen and heard the REF 160M’s in person? They must be seen in person, the photos don’t do them justice. They also must be heard - especially in Triode mode.

I was delighted to hear them on the Avantgarde’s. Dead quiet. In Triode mode, simply delicious. When Justin visited this week, he posted his comments. To me, he said the REF160M’s make other amps sound boring and homogenized. He really liked them.

The venting is very efficient. The tops don’t get overly hot.

Downside? Uhmmm...hmmm...well, on the Avantgarde’s, they’re so efficient, the needles don’t move much. A wiggle more than a bounce. Audio Research 160M. I would guesstimate that the power output is a little understated. They certainly seem more powerful than their spec’d 150 Watts.

The 160M is certainly like no other ARC amp I've heard in the past. I agree, it definitely has a powerful sound. The transient and control I heard with the Wilson was really impressive.

Got to hear these for the first time outside of Axpona last night with Wilson Sasha 2’s for a few songs. Very impressive! My preferences are typically aligned with Class A solid state, and these amps had the low end control I’ve not heard before with the ARC amps and the rest of the presentation was detailed (not analytical) with a tick of warmth. Transient response was there as well, no slow syrupy sound from these amps.

Paired with a Ref 6 pre and dCS Rossini, the sound stage filled the room and one could visualize placement of each player. Very cool setup. I’ll be giving them another audition for sure when I have time to do some more in-depth listening.

    Re: Audio Research 160M

I had the opportunity last weekend to listen to the ARC Reference 160M monoblocks at a fellow AudioShark member’s home. The rest of the system was an Esoteric Grandioso K1 CD/SACD Player, an Esoteric Grandioso G1 Master Clock, an ARC Reference 10 preamp, B&W 800 D3 Speakers, Shunyata Triton V3 and Typhon Power Conditioning, Transparent Reference XL cabling and Stillpoints. The system was meticulously set up in an outstanding listening room.

The Reference 160M monoblocks produced gorgeous tonality, with plenty of punch, tight and robust bass and expansive soundstage. In the ultralinear mode, the music was very liquid sounding with terrific layering but also quite detailed and precise. In the triode mode, the presentation became more organic and relaxed sounding but with a bit less detail and precision.

Both modes were extremely enjoyable and it was very quick to switch between them with a touch of a button. I think the triode mode excels on jazz and acoustic vocals or an edgy recording to smooth it out. But quite honestly, it works well on everything. To conclude, the Ref 160M are fantastic sounding amps, beautiful to look at and my favorite in the ARC line. A real step forward for ARC.

OK Mike, a couple more weeks have passed since I’ve pestered you for more 160M notes... and to be sure, comments from others are only adding to my Jones. I may be pulling the trigger soon. Are your’s on the stock footers?

My delema is, somewhat, given the price of 160M’s and additional amp-stand & power cord, we’re in the neighborhood of D’agostino S250—and if I have ever considered SS amp in my system thats the one. Small matters of degrees and taste I suppose, I expect the all-ARC synergy would get the nod, at the slight expense of the ultimate control of the Alexia woofers.

Well, I continue to try them on different speakers and continue to be amazed. If the ARC guys say this is the best amp they’ve ever made, I couldn’t argue. Better than any ARC amp I’ve owned, that’s for darn sure.

With time, they continue to open up and just amaze me with tonal richness, bass control, separation and musicality.

To my ears, the D’Ag is a great amp, but has some energy in the midbass. That will exacerbate Wilson Alexia character traits. The ARC is more balanced IMHO. Constellation is the closest SS, IMO, to the ARC in terms of linearity, something I firmly believe in for most speakers. ARC has also been around for 48 years and I suspect will be around for 48 more and beyond. Others cannot claim that. Audiophiles have seemingly turned a blind eye to brand longevity despite the loss of Charlie Hansen, Ken Shindo, AJ Conte, Jim Thiel and more.

Agh, piggy bank stuffed! My garage is clear of multiple pieces of power equipment I’ve not needed here in Oregon (I still have my tractor!), and the Minister of Finance has given the nod of approval (I just told her its been a fantasy since I was in my 20’s to own ARC mono-blocks), so it looks like I’ll be ordering up a pair of 160M shortly.

Now how do I walk around and hide this audio chubby!

Cobgratulations Bob! I’ve seen and heard the Ref 160s at Mike’s store. They are impressive in looks and sound. Should be a fantastic match for your Alexias.

BTW, enjoy the journey through break in. Some people complain about it but it has never bothered me.

Lastly, when I heard the 160s at Mike’s they only had a few hours on them. And, they sounded pretty darn good!

My audio guardian angel has looked after me, so buying sight unseen and unheard, and it has worked out for me in the past. That said, Mike’s comments and those of others who haven’t been big ARC fanboys (like myself) have made the decision easier.

Congrats Bob. When you put them in Triode mode, you'll be loving them!

Ken (alpinist) thanks for responding to my post. I'm trying to discern as much as I can about the 160M's because my local dealer has nothing but a REF 75SE and a REF6. Bob V can you shed any light on the differences between the 160M's and your Ref 75 with KT 150s? Thanks everyone.

I certainly am not the one to ask, as I've not heard or laid eyes on the 160M's. I am buying sight unseen and sound unheard. I believe it is a safe bet... The Ref75 with KT150 tubes, in my system (I did not upgrade my amp to the SE version) has been a delight on nearly every level. Granted, the REF75 doesn't have the kind control of the Alexia woofers you'll get from a SS design like the D'agostino amps, but I have been willing to accept that fact in trade for the wonderful timber and nuance of the midrange, where vocals have a 3-dimensional truth and purity I find compelling.

Given the GS150 came after the current REF lineup and was consistently reported to be (possibly) the best sounding ARC amp they'd made, I am of the opinion that the REF160 amp, being mono-blocks, is likely to bring the GS150 qualities to an even higher level. Initial reports is they do just that, and my speaking with Dave Gordon at ARC leads me to understand they consider the REF160 to improve in significant ways on the GS150.

Everyone makes decisions in this hobby with their own reasoning. I am a longtime fan of ARC so I certainly have loyalty and bias. Their latest offerings offer hi-fidelity at a price well below many manufacturers, and many will argue this or that brand is more realistic. It usually is a matter of what parameters are most compelling for you, and your budget. I feel blessed to have assembled a very, very enjoyable system and expect the new amps will bring more of what I like from ARC (and satisfy my jones to finally own a pair of ARC monos.) My wife thinks I am f_ing nuts, but fortunately she loves me and lets me get away with things I probably ought not to. Bless her heart.

    Re: Audio Research 160M

I have owned my Ref. 160's for about a month now. While I do not have a lot of hours on them yet I can say that they are flat out amazing.
When I removed my temporary cabling and my re-calibrated Transparent cables were inserted the sound reached another level of excellence.

With my very efficient Avantgarde Duo XD's triode mode sounds heavenly. So engaging and sweet sounding with layering in the soundstage like I have never experienced in my system.
I am having an issue with a loud pop through the speakers when shutting the amps off. This would not be an issue with most as the high efficiency speakers are most likely revealing this.
ARC is aware of this and I am hopeful that a solution will be provided.

If I can just figure out what DAC to purchase I should be in sonic bliss for a long time!

Bob, can't wait to hear your thoughts. This is a great decision in light of your speaker choice, which can be demanding at times into lower impedances - the monoblocks with separate transformers should be amazing!

My quote seems almost like I am saying the bass from the Ref75, into the Alexias, has less than stellar performance. Just not the same grunt and bite as the very best SS designs, but you might give up some tonality the Ref75 offers. I expect the 160's to be better for sure.
