Re: Racks - got any favorites?

Here's some very cool racks out of Poland. The isolation system (although it takes a little time to understand) is ingenious.
Think of a large radius bowl insert in the bottom of the shelf sitting on a free floating carbon fiber 'bullet' with a smaller radius dome on the top and a larger angle inverted cone on the bottom. This element in turn sits on a steel spike and is free to pivot in all horizontal directions similar, but different to the Symposium products. The shelves themselves are made of 3 layered composite MDF and HDF up to 50mm total thickness with decent looking veneers, and the price is right for what you get (but shipping and import duties may be problematic).

Partial to the Mapleshade Samson line, but then again that is the only 'good' rack I have tried. Have one in my stereo, and two in the HT.

They are solid maple with steel rods. My two channel rack, empty, weighs 500 pounds, which helps with vibration control.

The Samson's are really good racks. They take Michael Green's original Just-a-rack concept to the extreme. I still have one of Michael's Deluxe racks I bought many years ago.

Re: Racks - got any favorites?

I own a Solidsteel H6 rack. But some of the shelves have started to bend. I might want to replace them. But with what? My first thought would be Birch multiplex or maybe Bamboo multiplex.

I could go exotic and look for Lexan or simular.

But I'm not sure. Any Tips? How thick?

Also thinking about putting some sand or something inside the legs of rack and replacing the spike with maybe the cheapest Ansuz darkz.

So many options. Any tips would be welcome.

Re: Racks - got any favorites?

I'm sort of in an 'anti-rack' spot where I have all my gear setting on Herzan TS series active isolation shelves. my preamp and dac are stacked on a TS-150 and my tt sits on a TS-140.

I'm using the Adona GTX which is a fine, modestly priced grounded rack. but as long as a rack is solid, the Herzan does not care what it sits on......and active just kicks ass.

you can spend more than I've spent for active on passive racks, but I would not do that.

if I wanted a great sounding passive decoupling rack my list of most desirable racks would have Artesania Exoteryc at the top ($10k + or - depending). it seems to eliminate all the limitations of racks by eliminating the actual shelf (and even needing footers) and does not just attempt to isolate, it really does it. but it puts on no airs as pretty. it's a tool. but WAF is a non-issue as I'm in a separate building from my house.

I owned a large array of the GPA Monaco years ago and got very tired of changing those pads every 6 months. I had boxes and boxes of those pads but was always missing just the right compliance. and turntables had mixed reactions to the GPA Monaco, even the GPA TT I had.

the prettiest racks I've seen are the Burmester racks. elegant as hell with the right looking gear.....great for system pictures. but they are just pretty.....and more furniture than helping the performance. not my deal.....but YMMV.

And by the way i have Finite Elements Pagode with Cerabase
But i also like the look and idea of the Artesenia.....Although i dont think its possible to do comparisons at home with different racks on loan from dealers, at least not here in Denmark.

I own the Exoteryc 3 + 3. No experience with the Prestige. The purchase of the Artesania was an impulse thing. I was looking at other gear at the time, noticed this rack. The rest is history...... Racks, in general, are getting AWFULLY expensive. There are real differences even among the most expensive ones. I have no idea how someone would navigate through the choices. For me, its 1) Artesania and 1b) GPA. Like Mike L, I also have a Herzan which is a completely new discussion.

I think TechDas recently OEM'ed Artesania to do their TT racks.

Anyone know the brand shown in this pic? Love the looks:

IDK, I think it's nice looking. Reminds me a little of the Finite Element Pagode racks.

I think the rack itself is 500lbs of Copper and Aluminum!

Prices range from approx $7k for an amp stand up to about $31k for a 5 level rack! .. so way out of my league . I find my current Taoc ASR racks with upgraded SCB-RS-HC shelves, FE feet and Stillpoints Ultra footers do a great job, hence upgrading my racks is way down my list of priorities. Though if I were in the market today for new racks, I would go for CMS QXK racks.

We build our own custom racks with maple and machined brass footers and top caps. Here's one installed yesterday for a customer. 4" thick bottom shelf and 2" thick for the other three. Note the Melco N1A feeding the Bel Canto Black ACI600 integrated. He absolutely loves this piece.

Great news Mike. I've been looking at the RXR. It looks like you can take your isolation platforms and just place them on to the rack, also upgrade them if you want. Pretty simple and looks nice too.

I liked the analysis done here, he finds that different racks sound different at different levels. Some sound the best at top level, and some at the bottom. The sound ranges from too tight to lose. Also where you position the feet of the component, whether in the centre or towards the outer edges, matters. http://www.hifi-advice.com/blog/revi...ryc-audiorack/

There's lots of really nice racks out there (many already mentioned). I talked to the designer of HRS at a Capital Audiofest but was not close to being ready at that juncture. I had Salamander Synergy at the time, which now is in a back-up system. Right before my current move a few years back, I designed the specs and sent it to Klaus at Odyssey audio (as I needed something specific for the screen height - pic below). One of my favorites (which I've seen at shows), is the Kanso furniture - http://kansoaudiofurniture.com/

Re: Racks - got any favorites?

I built my own suspended audio rack. The basic frame is of birch wood. At the top, I have threaded rods the hanging down. The bracket holding the rods is isolated by Harmonic Resolution pucks. I don't have shelves, but, instead, I have wood staves with holes at both ends for the threaded rods. The components sit between the two staves, front, and back. The TT sits on a marble slab isolated by Harmonic Resolutions pucks. I can put a glass of water on the platter of my TT, jump in front of it and there is no ripple. The nice thing about this rack is the staves holding the components are infinitely adjustable.

Re: Racks - got any favorites?

I have tried several racks and landed on (for now):

Stillpoints ESS rack: great sound and the infinitely adjustable shelf height is very cool. Sound with Ultra SS feet is top quality. Easy to change shelf height if you are swapping gear a lot. Cool machined aluminum look.

Grand Prix Audio Monaco Modular: sounds amazing and slightly less $ than the ESS, and a completely different aesthetic. Fixed height, but modular shelfs.

Grand Prix Audio Silverstone F1: My top pick, by far. Out of this world good, but also the most $$$. Variable shelf height, but it takes a bit of effort to change shelf heights.

Be mindful with any 3 point rack, if you have deep equipment that has the power plug in the center, the plug will sometimes run into the rear rack post.

I do feel that many people do not make isolation and dampening enough of a priority. Huge gains from a good rack.

    my 2 cents,

I currently have a Solidtech Duo3 and use still points under all components. Currently exploring options from Grandprix and Critical Mass as I've outgrown the shelf space on my current rack. Leaning towards the CM Sotto Voce setup with the black sapphire shelves.

There were a few Artesanía racks recently at Axpona. The Vivid room had an impressive Artesania rack with amp stands.

They are spanish...but as a fellow spaniard I think it´s no excuse in this day and age to put up a poster with such glaring grammatical errors, I find it bewildering that some spanish audio companies don´t have their website in spanish, only in english and sometimes with spelling mistakes that hurt the eye, it´s like going to the Oscars gala with a shirt full of stains. If you´re amongst the top rack companies in the world charging thousands of Euros for your products, spend a couple hundred and get your stuff professionally translated for the love of god, but hey maybe I´m too picky.
