Thanks for posting Terry Ellis's discussions with Holger of Avantgarde.

By coincidence I wrote to Terry about tuning my Duo XDs whilst he was visiting the AG facility. I was unaware that AG was moving towards Active speakers with streamer facilities built in. Although not mentioned, AG also build in-room correction into their bass amps, so we can expect something on the lines of a very up-market Dutch & Dutch system with their Generation 3 speakers. I'm sure it's the way many top speaker builders will be going over the next decade.

Unfortunately (from my point of view) Terry is a Dirac specialist engineer and tuner. Although he took a look at AG's XD software, he still would prefer to use Dirac to improve my Duo's performance. I've lost enthusiasm in all room correction systems that are built into full-range amps, such as Dirac Live (in my NAD), RoomPerfect (in Lyngdorf) and MARS (in Micromega), as they all require the ENTIRE full-range signal to go through an extra stage of processing and consequently the sparkle in the top end (one of the reasons we buy Avantgarde systems) is slightly tempered as a result. For this reason, I'd much prefer to use XD to adjust the bass response of the Duos as this involves SOLELY the bass signal to be processed. I'm hoping to get some meaningful measurements of my speakers' performance in my own room in the next couple of weeks, so I can use XD to make the adjustments required without any loss of top-end sparkle. Very cool, A/B instant switch between passive and fully active SS.
Wait...:disbelief:

Great to see how Avantgarde continues to evolve their horn speaker designs.

Agreed and I love the look of the new Trio’s….just not sure how I feel about all active.

I love the look too, but seems like tubes still need to be in the equation for my taste.
At least they offer a passive or an active option.

I prefer tubes to any SS on the AG. Admittedly, they can do some interesting things when the speakers are active, so I’ll reserve judgement until I hear them.

Will be interesting to see how the new design and technologies trickle down to other models.

I would guess they will all get the new treatment. Exciting!

In some ways yes, in others perhaps no! Avantgarde started building their 3 basic designs Trio, Duo and Uno in the last 1990s, yet they've never changed their horns' design, material or dimensions even up to the new G3 series. The only change (as far as I can detect) is that the horns are now screwed into their enclosures rather than being bolted in. Is it just by careful design 25 years ago that Holger got these dimemsions and designs spot on in the first place (despite not previously being a speaker designer) and finds there is no need to change the horns over these decades? The enclosures, drivers and amps have been changed, often quite significantly but never the horns themselves. OK I'm wrong - the Uno's mid horn has shrunk a little but that's all. Just curious. Peter, as he explains in the video, they haven’t changed that because it’s “physics”.

Ha-ha! As Cristine Keeler would say "He would say that, wouln't he".

If "physics" was so clear, then every horn speaker would have the same horn design as Avantgarde.

Unless they are changing the shape of the horn or the frequency, it won’t change. You think they would go to a JBL horn?
