Here are some pics of my watch project. It is a partial Submariner homage based on a Seiko SNZF-17J1 (the 'J' denoting this is the Japan model) which I sent to Seiko guru Harold Ng who did the following mods; MBenz hands, domed sapphire crystal glass with blue AR coating & lumed bezel insert. I also replaced the factory Super Oyster with a Super Oyster bracelet with button Chamfer clasp from Strapcode. I'm really happy with the results. All up it cost me less than $500 for a reliable, accurate automatic which looks and feels close enough to a Rolex to keep me happy :).

Joe, I always like Casio watches and always got the "hand-me-downs" from dad, so I was always set with watches growing up. Then about 12 years ago, I got into a big kick on a bunch of Seiko automatic watches (including the famous Orange Monster), then shortly after bought up a bunch (like 10 or 11) Casio G-Shock watches, even a couple that I ordered straight out of Japan for the Japanese only market as well as a Pathfinder which I worse the majority of time. And they're all of the solar ones.

Then about five years or so ago, I bought an automatic Deep Blue diver watch. I've been wearing that one all the up until a couple weeks ago when I took delivery of my current Samsung Galaxy watch.

Too many watches to post here, but here's the link to the folder on my site for all of them over the years if you or anyone else is interested.

No such thing as too big a watch! :P
My Panerai subs are 47mm and Apple Watch is 44mm.
I must admit the steel models can get pretty heavy but titanium models makes them more manageable.

I haven’t worn a watch for decades…

Way back when I was a teenager, the first digital watch appeared. James Bond wore one in “Live and Let die”, and Bill Bixby wore one in a TV show “the Magician.” I worked at the Worlds Fair in Spokane, WA (Expo 74) and was a senior in high school. I saved my $$ and paid $300 for a “Pulsar.” My foster mom at the time really laid into me for spending that kind of money on a watch “you’ll never be able to afford nice things” she said in the most demeaning way possible. That really took some of the joy out of it!

So around early December I noticed the watch is being remade. I got a serious jones for it, had it as a tab in my browser window for a couple weeks. I have a wee-bit more impulse control these days—should I buy one? No, “just a frivolous purchase for nostalgia’s sake” I told myself, and “you don’t even wear a watch.” Yeah, but its so cool and retro. Finally I closed the browser tab and forgot about it. My more practical side had won out.

But, my sweet wife paid attention and under the tree on Christmas morning I got a big surprise.

I'm wearing one of my faves from my favorite brand, Sinn. Sinn is a German watch company famous for making no-nonsense tool watches, but they make a very nice range of watches overall. Using Swiss movements, and a typically German level of execution and "take-no-prisoners" approach to their engineering (they have technologies that literally no other brand has), they're my kinda watch company.

Today it's my Sinn 104i Special Matte Edition with bead-blasted case on a steel sailcloth strap. This bad boy runs to +1 sec/day.

From different eras. 2 blacks and 1 pepsi.
This watch is still a great investment.
It went from 5000 euros 7 years ago to 14000 now ( full sets are more around 15-16k ). I predict that they will be around 30k in a few years.
Like the PP 5711 and the Daytona, it is now impossible to get one new from a Rolex retailer. And the demand is very high.

I am a long time watch collector. I do not have anything of high value like Patek, AP, Lange & Sohne, etc. My collection is all mechanical watches, auto and manual wind. I am amazed at how such a tiny mechanical machine can keep time as accurate as they do. Since I have retired I find myself rarely wearing a watch. If everyone is ok I think I will go through my collection on this thread before I liquidate most of any value.

This is a Nodus from a small boutique maker. Not high cost but I have several from these type small shops that build great looking watches with high level build quality.

I asked them to change the bezel to a red/blue “Pepsi” and amazingly they sent the original red/black back with it. Incredible how much this watch has appreciated. I have a GMT-MASTER II 116710 I will post a pic of eventually.

I couldn't agree more, bought my 'Pepsi' (M16700) back over twenty five years ago for less than 3k, easily worth triple that today. Had it recently serviced at the Rolex facility in Litiz, Pa and while servicing as we all know is not cheap it's worth every penny with respect to maintaining value

It looks like you wear your straps pretty tight! Always one of those things that has kept me from wearing a watch regularly — tight so it doesn’t flop around, or just a bit less for comfort but then the watch moves around (always towards the outside of my wrist) making it a little less comfortable. My new strap is a wee bit tight to affect the former. Since I will probably only wear as jewelry (not for every day) it seems OK on the snug side.

How do others wear ‘em… loose or snug?

nc42acc

Today I'm wearing the best mechanical watch I've ever used and the best watch I've ever owned, my Sinn EZM 3. This dive watch has an inert gas atmosphere to keep the internal atmosphere dry and free from moisture, and to keep it from fogging up in cold water on dives. It also has a copper sulfate capsule also used to absorb any water molecules that may gain ingress to the interior of the case. 500M depth rating.

Designed for the German GSG 9 Special Forces Dive Unit. Those guys know how to "operate".

This bad boy runs to +1 sec/day, regardless how often I wear it, well within COSC specification.

Sinn has got it...goin' on. For example, this EZM, the EZM12 that was designed for medical rescue team professionals. The 4-bladed rotor lets them quickly get an accurate pulse on the patient being rescued.

From Sinn:

The Sinn EZM 12 is designed for medical professionals, particularly those involved in emergency medicine.

This watch takes it place among Sinn's EZM Mission Timer Watches (Einsatzzeitmesser) which are designed for the German Special Forces, including SWAT, Customs, FBI, helicopter police, GSG9 and other elite units.

If you've traveled in Germany you know about the autobahn, which in many parts of the country allows for unlimited speed. Although this unlimited speed is an adrenaline rush, it can unfortunately lead to very serious accidents.

German Air Rescue Team
To create this watch, Sinn collaborated with the German Air Rescue Team, which maintains a presence throughout the country. This elite team flies helicopters staffed with doctors and medics who are on 24 hour standby for car accidents.

Sinn just doesn't...f**k around.

Love it!! I like the reversed crown and pushers or is it a right wrist watch?

It's called a "destro crown". The crown is on the left side of the case so it does not interfere with movement of the diver's wrist. Sinn uses this design on some of of their dive watches as the crown can get the way of your wrist movement when when wearing a wet suit and/or dive gloves. BTW, real divers don't use bracelets any more, they all use rubber straps.

Shown here is the new Sinn EZM 13.1 on a rubber dive strap, released just the other day. 500M depth resistance, 60 min chronograph function, and pushers can be actuated...under water (f**kin' Sinn, I tell ya what...). Note the the running seconds is at 3 O'clock and the indices are in gray, so that the running seconds don't compete or distract your attention with the chronograph subdial when you don't want to track the running seconds.

https://photos.imageevent.com/puma_cat/watches/websize/Sinn-EZM13_Web.jpg

BTW, this watch also has an inert gas atmosphere inside the hermetically-sealed case to keep the interior of the case dry (as in the chemistry definition of "dry", i.e. free from water molecules). It also has a replaceable copper sulfate capsule in the case, so that in the rare event water molecules do gain ingress to the case, they are absorbed by the copper sulfate, and the interior stays dry. This prevents fogging up of the dial when diving in cold water, and also contributes significantly to the reliability and durability of the watch, as it's water molecules that get into the watch case that causes lubricants to break down and...causes wear on the movement parts.

Frickin' Sinn...no one else thinks these details through in the way these guys do...

There really is no need to buy a Rolex unless you want the prestige and status symbol of owning one. Don’t get me wrong Rolex builds an amazing watch but with the homage watches of today that give you amazing build and reliability at a fraction of the cost. I will wear these doing anything and not worry about scratches. Rolex prices have increased so much I hate to wear mine in fear it will depreciate the value. I need to sell all my prestige watches and go visit Mike, much more enjoyment for me in audio now.

I agree. Plus, Rolexes are no better a watch mechanically than many other brands, and as I mentioned the other day, doesn't have some of the technology that Sinn has, for example. Or Grand Seiko, for that matter (GS' Spring Drive movement is pretty amazing).

Plus, good luck buying one at retail. There is NO inventory at ADs.

Put it up for sale ... so far, its still here.

So took it back, put it on my wrist, and felt so good. One of the 2 retirement watches to stay. The other's the Rolex Day-Date Platinum.

This is the actual picture of it when advertised for sale. Looks good isn't it. Happy its back home with me!

A Lange & Sohne...bucket list watch for me. Not yet though. Unless I sell my audio system or 911. Nah...

Its was a joke. Blancpain is French for white bread. Nothing wrong with the watch...quite wearable.

They have the snobbiest slogan of all. Since 1735, there has NEVER been a quartz Blancpain watch.....and there never will be! Tlk about a backhanded slap to the competition. Now we know who the REAL uncompromising purists are! LoL

Given that I spent many years living in downtown Gva, luxury watches are very familiar to me. Very interesting place to visit is the Patek museum, which was 7 minutes walk from my old home and the Rolex HQ which was 15 mins walk. Now I like close to the Chopard heiress's mansion.

The coolest watch expereince for me is wearing the prototype Rolex Daytona 2 for half hour, as I knew the lead designer. It has a glass back, not a metal back.

Understand the joke. And I love Blancpain, especially their dive watches. I also appreciate date numerals that I can see with my aging eyes. My Rolex "magnifier" doesn't cut it any more.

The pic certainly gives that perspective. No, on wrist and viewed with less close up it doesn't read like a wall clock. Really interesting watch, and H Moser is a very interesting and cool company. It was the one day I wore the watch. Had purchased from Watchbox, pre owned, and after a few hours a screw running loose in the movement jammed the rotor. It has been returned. I don't think it is a problem characteristic of Moser. (and the service from Watchbox was excellent; they arranged a quick return).
Fascinating watch. I have been looking for a sportier type watch, and this one, with its hands, and without a bezel, doesn't quite come across as a sporting timepiece. Loved it though. If I were looking to build a collection of multiple watches, I would keep this.

Hello friends,

I do not wear my expensive watches anymore. This is too dangerous in Paris. Too many attacks.
They are all in the safe at the bank. I keep them as investments.
I wear either an Apple Watch or this one which I actually prefer : a Withings Scan Watch.
Looks more like a classical watch. And battery span is almost 1 month !
Thanks to it, I discovered that I have an arythmic cardiac rythm.

Serious question for you watch guys.

Does the cost of the movement in a watch by itself determine if the watch will be reliable? I keep getting a bunch of nice looking Wood watches advertised on my FB feed because I looked at one. I like many of them but when I look at the details and google the actual Movement, they sell for anywhere between $12 and $40, I saw one as high as $70 which was a Seiko movement. So if I really like a watch, and the price is say $200, but the movement only costs $20, am I wasting my money? Right now I am wearing a Citizen Eco that I bought about 20 years ago, and have a Seiko for dress and an old Waltham windup that was my wife's uncle Dons if you recall my Boardwalk Empire thread.

The short answer is no. Quartz watches are accurate and precise. And cheap. Whether it's a $20 or $2000 electronic watch it's going to keep time about the same, and likely much more accurately than a $10k automatic watch. Buy what you like. Oh, and a cell phone or computer is even more accurate, so you really don't need a watch. That said I have many, and still like to wear them for different reasons and purposes, none of which involve accuracy or precision (much).

Hi Brian,

Cost is a factor, but more in the sense of the cost of the materials and parts used. The other key aspect impacting reliability for a watch movement is the precision with which the parts are assembled into the final movement. The movement in the now-classic Seiko SKX (SKX007/SKX009) dive watches, which when I bought mine in 2015 sold for $179 (for the entire watch) was the 7S26. This movement did not hack or hand-wind, but was exceptionally durable. Given the SKXs retailed for ~$180, the wholesale price was likely about $90, which meant Seiko had no more than $45-50 to spend on the entire BOM (Bill of Materials), assembly, QC, bracelet, and packaging for the watch. So, the movement in the venerable SKXs was likely right in the price range for Seiko movement you've cited here. What you should do is see if you can find out what specification Seiko movement is used you're referring to. AFAIK, the 7S26 movement is no longer in production.

Here's a coupla pics of my SKX. First pic is the original watch, and the second is my mod, including a double-dome AR crystal and a ceramic "Batman" bezel insert.

If you can source a built-up Seiko movement, e.g. the NH35, you'll have a reliable movement that also hacks.

The Original Grain watches use Miyota movements. Miyota is a mechanical watch movement company owned by Citizen; they sell mechanical watch movements for other watch companies. They're solid, reliable, and dependable mechanical watch movements.

My (newest) G-Shock, the formidable new Mudmaster, ref. GWGB-1000-3A

Bought this at the Meet the Inventor of G-Shock, Kikuo Ibe, event at Topper Jewelers in Burlingame at the very end of October. Been tough to take this one off, as I really love this piece. Amongst it's myriad features, it has a Barometer, so I can tell when it might rain. I also use it to set alarms and such.

I wear it when I'm out on my training rides on the racing bicycle as I don't want to f*ck up the regulation of one of my mechanicals if I happen to fall while on the bike. It also has a stopwatch function, so I can time my rides.
