That's really cool bob . I was also recently reading about a new phone battery coming out that lasts weeks, and is powerful enough to jump start your car.

There may be a new optical format at some point but the switch for the majority of consumers is to downloads/streaming of video. Just like music alternative formats will hang on but for most downloads and streaming will be de rigueur.

Try to download Ultra hi-def video, 4K, 3D, and hi-res audio (7.1 lossless; uncompressed stems) from the cyber space into your computer (or Mac).

You'd do much better (faster and easier) to spy on anyone's emails and phone conversations and browsing's history!

Unfortunately, the disc is fighting a losing battle. The only reason it is still barely viable is because of our crumbling infrastructure. It's not an issue of size.

As soon as people get fiber-to-home at gigabit+ speeds, downloading an entire blu-ray disc (bitperfect, mind you) will take less than 5 minutes.

That is exactly the section which is represented by the audiophiles & videophiles. ...And not only from the software's perspective, but also the hardware.
You and I and us here we are contributing to a minuscule sector of the market, and also encouraging hi-end audio/video manufacturers to keep pushing the boundaries of the very best.

* Oil will be with us for still a very long time; even with all the pollution and catastrophic irresponsibilities of the rich corporations. Better energy (more efficient, no pollution, ...) is going to take a long time before it takes over oil.
...Electric cars, efficient batteries, air power, wind turbines, solar energy, wave's energy, cold (ice) energy, volcanic energy, ....

...The same is similar with our audio and video hobbies.
...And the world of communication; cell phones, and all that jazz.

Yes, fiber optic is the way, but that too we'll pay for it. ...And it ain't a perfect world.... No good to be slaved of our own environment; we all want to break free. ...And forever.
And we're always on the go; our homes are in luxury hotels, in the forests, in the jungles, up the mountains, on exotic beaches, ....
We want to see the world from various best places, and not just from only few ....

Freedom is travelling our beautiful planet; seeing all the nicest people, and not being slaves of our own limited surroundings.
