Used Amplifier question to experienced buyers

I'm talking general terms here. Plus, I'm sure three may be differences between brands. When do amps start generally need major maintenance done like being recapped, etc? ust curious as I shop for a used amplifier

It can depend on the level of thermal stress as well as the type of amplifier. It can also depend on whether the amplifier has been exhibiting problems. In general for most Class A A/B amps, you might have to start thinking about it in 15 years, give or take (obviously some things are built better than other things and that can impact things as well - e.g. if one is talking about a lower end amp built to get it out to market at a cheap price point vs. something built to handle the thermal issues better).
Main System - Lumin U2, Modwright LS36.5 DM Preamp, VTV Purifi 1ET-7040SA with tube buffer, EMM Labs DAC 2X (ver. 2), Torus RM-20, Thiel CS 3.7s, 2 Rel S/812 subs
Back-up 1 - Premium Audio mini Gan Amp, Oppo 103D, 2 Richard Gray cond, Selah SA-2s, Sumiko S5 sub, Teac UD-503 DAC, Carver (modded) C-9
    Back-up 2 - Onkyo TX-NR797, Panasonic DP-UB820, Vansevers cond, B&W P6s, PowerSoundAudio S1500 sub

Re: Used Amplifier question to experienced buyers

I research the history of the unit to see what pops up. For example some Levinson and Krell amps run very hot and have early failures, usually electrolytic capacitors, which are very heat sensitive. If I don’t find anything then the unit is good for well over 20 years, more if it has been used infrequently.

Re: Used Amplifier question to experienced buyers

In my experience, amplifiers can easily last about 10 - 15 years without major problems.
This is purely on your expectation for a number which is hopefully useful in your purchasing a used amplifier.

Gear that has been kept well will easily last longer.
Typically audio "enthusiasts" cycle through gear every 3 - 4 years if not more.
IMO buying used is one of the best ways to get the best bang for the buck.

Here in Asia, we have several high end dealers who need to replace their gear every so often.
These are some of the best deals you can get as the gear is usually very well kept and provenance is known.

    Regards

I have never bought an new amp. All my amps were either dealer demo models or true 2nd hand amps. I never had any problems with any of my amps.

I'll definitely go used or demo. I prefer to an amp to be 5 years or younger. I'm a patient man.....so the right one will pop up somewhere
