...Is it necessarily a bad thing? It smooths the top end in some amps and speakers that need it. A rolled off top end is not always a bad thing, is it?

Yes. Rolled off does not smooth, it is missing information. If a system cannot reproduce extended highs without being offensive, the system needs improvement somewhere.

A good system should be distortion free and present the highs without offense. It also helps if the system has a good balance throughout the frequency response, meaning neither highs or bass should dominate, some refer to this as "flat", as myself.

Those who have live music as a reference also realize how a cymbal sounds and is present in the music, how a trumpet has bite, etc.

If someone wants their home system not to have those traits there's no audio police, but to address your question, I don't feel "rolled off" is accurate reproduction.

Rolled off highs usually means the system is removing music in the quest of removing noise. Throwing the baby out with the bath water.

I couldn't say better!

First off high freq 'roll off' is very age discriminate, if you're mid sixties or beyond(like me) you're already well 'rolled off' !!

All of the above comments, Tom, are of course, dependent on good recordings that do have quality sound over the spectrum. The recording industry more often than not is an audiophiles anti-boon

I've been noticing many of your posts, and it seems you're second guessing your recent purchase. What if? Should I? What does? What's this? I'm hoping you'll simply take delivery of your new gear and enjoy it, rather than second guessing your decision. There are too may variables and opinions. The gear that you like is the best for you.

1) you should never stop reading ..........

2) you should never be afraid to ask a question .........

I made the final decision on my system about 2 months ago. Any other inquiries and/or posts after that were just to learn stuff about other brands and/or learn more about the digital end of home audio. I knew very little about digital. I still have so much to learn. But my knowledge regarding digital has grown significantly.

I'll complete the money withdrawal process for my system January 2nd...out of my pension and into my checking account. As soon as that's completed I'll pay Mike and wait on the freight truck to show up at my door. I hope to be up and operational a couple weeks into January, maybe sooner. That's barring any hitches along the way.

I appreciate your thoughts and your post. A few months ago I was overwhelmed and, yes, paralyzed by choices. The best thing I did to help alleviate that was make the trip to Suncoast Audio in October. It helped me narrow things down considerably, although not completely. Anyway, it's pretty much all over but the dancing. Soon I will spend a little less time on the forum, go play with my system, and....."enjoy it."
