Plate power amp out of my Proficient Audio S12 powered subwoofer - need a little help.....

Hi all, I have a Proficient Audio S12 powered subwoofer with a 250watt plate power amp inside it. One section of the power supply within the power amp seems to have self destructed. I realize these subwoofers are quite old now, but, I really would like to get a copy of the schematic if possible!!! I've already called Proficient Audio and talked with their tech support. He went to the engineers there and said that because the company had change hands a couple times (now owned by Nortek Security and Control) they had "lost" the schematics for some of their products. So, I'm SOL there. Does anyone know where/how I can get a copy of the schematic for it?? I know I can go to Parts Express and get another 250 watt plate amp (Dayton audio) for about $175 or so, but I really want to give repairing my original amp a shot. Thanks!!

I wish I could help with a schematic but I can't. However, can you identify the components on the board and replace them with new ones of equal value? The only problem with that is there could be other components that look ok but could be fried. I repaired an old Advent receiver once just by replacing the obviously burnt up components and it worked great. I also tried to fix an old ESS preamp and it wound up nearly on fire. With all that said $175 seems cheap to replace it. Good luck.

Usually plate amps fail because they vibrate apart. Usually it’s large parts with large moment arms like big electrolytic capacitors. This can in turn cause other failures in a catastrophic ’waterfall’ scenario. Even without a schematic you can start checking the output devices and work backwards from there. Good luck!
