Re: Gryphon Apex, the New Flagship

It would be interesting to compare Apex stereo vs Mephisto Mono.

Mephisto Monos never made much sense to me in terms of what they offered vs the stereo amp.

Re: Gryphon Apex, the New Flagship

The Gryphon Apex proves there's no end in sight for cost, size and weight of the amps that manufacturers will design and build. I'm not sure I understand the audience that would need an Apex. My Gryphon Pandora pre and Antileon EVO Stereo amp control my Rockport Altairs better than any amp I've ever owned. I likely haven't tapped into more than 25% of the Antileon's power capabilities as I run it most of the time in the medium bias setting.

At 450 pounds, you need some type of floor jack system to get it in position for the amp stand. Gryphon didn't bother putting handles in the rear knowing they'd be useless.

I'm a bit confused on the cost. I see $120,000 mentioned for the Apex stereo version. According to this article, the Apex stereo costs
82,500 Euros which coverts to US$93,750 - Gryphon Launches New Flagship Commander and Apex Amplifiers | StereoNET United Kingdom . LOL, sounds like I'm already trying to convince myself to buy one.

Agree - I can’t imagine ever moving from my Pandora and AE. At least, not until I move into a new place with a bigger listening room and have upgraded my speakers to do this combo justice. But is exciting to see Gryphon doing something innovative beyond the Mephisto. Will be interesting to see what people think after listening to it and what speakers match well with it.

Most likely On A Higher Note should have had in their contract that there would be a buy back if needed and they probably didn't

Youre assuming there was a contract, most Distributors are small operations and there are no International legal contracts in place… this is how they can just be dropped. Even if there was a contract, who do you think is going to spend $100k to attempt to have it enforced on a Company in another Country who doesnt have the money any way? Its in the best interest of any Mnaufacturer to buy back their stock… otherwise they can be cleared out cheaply and damage the market and image. It appears that On A Higher Note did not do this and tried to milk as much gain as they could out of their stock.

Re: Gryphon Apex, the New Flagship

overall it is very uncommon that goods go back to a manufactor.
it is the distributors very own topic what he orders and can handle.
normally you do have contracts between manufactors and distributors about the lengths of the relationship.....so the two sides can plan in advance.

Re: Gryphon Apex, the New Flagship

Reading posts above it makes me sad to see Gryphon being trashed only because trying to pursue their business interests, most probably legal and legitimate. I feel sympathy for On a Higher Note because I feel they do a good job promoting brand they represent. But most stories have two ends, let us not forget this is not the first time - almost the same happened to On a Higher Note with Luxman and Vivid audio, as far as I remember. At least what Mr. O’Hanlon could do is learn from the past.

Re: Gryphon Apex, the New Flagship

    Very thoughtful and heart-felt message.

I have no idea how the audio business model works. All I know is that I am lucky being in Singapore: almost every major brand (but some exceptions - eg Karma) have small dealer rooms in a single shopping mall. So massive price competition, and amazing customer service.

I would also say, that unless my dealer had Gryphon to demo, I would not have gone down that rabbit hole. Same with my MSB and Magico dealers.

I can’t imagine spending the money I have spent on my sound system without the support (and listening rooms) provided by my trusted dealers. Am quite fiercely loyal to them all.

Yes, I'm sure a Manufacturer prefers that all of a sudden hundreds of their current components are cleared out on the open market at 40, 50 or 60% below retail. That bodes well for their future clients and I'm sure will make their current owners very happy. Its hard to recover from that. Gryphon is clearly not looking to exit the American Market... so yes, they should've bought it all back.

Rune at Gryphon said on intereview with Jeff Fritz that Commander is a great preamp much beyond Pandora. I hope Commander preamp is another Apex type of masterpiece and so keen to buy one.
