    Gato Audio

Anyone familiar with these beauties? http://www.gato-audio.com/ http://www.6moons.com/audioreviews/gato3/1.html
They look awesome to me, but way too expensive for me. Until today, when I got an offer to buy an ex-demo unit for good price. But that integrated amp is class D and I'm not familiar with class D, I hear most audiophiles say it's no match for class A or well constructed class AB.

Mate.......I did a complete review of the Gato Audio DIA-400 Class D integrated amplifier in October of 2013. It is a spectacular integrated amplifier and a powerful brute. There are many ingenious control features that go well beyond it's cool looking demeanor. My review component arrived brand new and I put just over 100 hours on it before I began to do critical listening and write my review. That review is posted on AA.

I was heartily impressed with the Gato Audio DIA-400. In comparison to a reference level McIntosh system (C1000C/P, MC2301's, Esoteric K-03, Sonus faber Amati Anniversario) the DIA-400 managed to stand its ground quite well. In addition, the Burr-Brown PCM 1794 DAC is well integrated into the amp and sounds excellent.

The last paragraph of my review is below:

There is a lot to like about the Gato Audio DIA-400 integrated amplifier. If you have a chance to audition it, don’t pass up the opportunity. Be ready for an attitude adjustment. This rock solid integrated amp is a genuine high-end audio component that delivers impressive, super clean, full spectrum sound. With an MSRP of $6000.00, this newest offering from Gato Audio might easily be considered a dragon slayer. This sweet integrated amplifier with DAC reminds me of the old adage good things come in small packages. When referring to the Gato Audio DIA-400 this is certainly true.

Wow... Dan... thanks. A link to your review, please, because I don't know what's "AA".
Srajan also reviewed DIA-400 and DIA-250 and JOB 225; I'm interested in last two. Srajan favored JOB to GATO:
On raw resolution—detail extraction, recreation of recorded space, distinct separation of overlaid masses, treble illumination—Gato's DIA-400 played far second fiddle to equivalent and lower-priced top-class A/B competitors like Goldmund's Job 225 or Crayon's CFA-1.2. Where the DIA-400 retaliated fiercely was on features and/or raw power.

    Re: Gato Audio

    Read everything, very good review!

I'm pleased that you used the Sonus faber Amati Anniversario. I have much cheaper and smaller Toy Towers, but they share the same tweeter with Amati, so at least some degree of sound should be similar between yours and mine speakers.

    http://www.sonusfaber.com/ContentsFi..._Toy_tower.pdf ---> Power handling for Toy Towers: 35W – 200W, without clipping - will they be ok with 2x 250W of DIA-250?

DIA-400, which you beautifully reviewed, is beyond my reach, so I'm thinking about ex-demo DIA-250, and even that might be too expensive to me, $1000 more than a brand new JOB INT or JOB 225.
Remarkably, Srajan compared DIA-400, DIA-250 and JOB 225! If I understood him correctly, which I believe I did, he likes JOB the best out of these three, but puts DIA-250 in second place, before the more expensive and more powerful DIA-400!?!

The perfectly identical-looking DIA-250—in fact there's nothing to give away which one is which except for weight—was the more open, transparent and fleet-footed. It had my immediate vote. In the context of speakers groomed for speed, exactitude and heightened transparency plus an easy impedance, the smaller amp was the more adroit stay-the-course choice. The DIA-400's greater warmth altered the sonic course. That could be just the ticket to flesh out lean transient-led big power-sucking boxes. The very civilized super-spacious strapping Albedos however devolved into something closer to Kenneth Brannagh's Wallander. The DIA-250 did remain marginally softer, rounder and weightier than the Crayon or Job but this offset now was more on the order of same-brand copper versus silver cables. The Italian two-way still was recognizably itself. Whilst it came alive at slightly higher levels than with the traditional topology amps, the DIA-250 sounded terrific on the Aptica. This felt predestined for a popular drawer in the audiophile belief system. Routinely a less powerful amp implementing equivalent tech is faster on the uptake and more transparent than its more muscle-bound sibling. Whilst all that remains relative to the load you mean to drive, the 250/500wpc into 8/4Ω with 0.006Ω output impedance of the DIA-250 would seem ample for most needs. If it were my wallet, I'd know exactly which model I'd buy whilst putting €1000 towards more music.

    Re: Gato Audio

Mate.......Glad you enjoyed the Gato Audio DIA-400 review. I was impressed with it's sound and performance. In fact, I continued to think about the DIA-400 long after I shipped it back to the U.S. distributor. It does a lot of things right in an attractive and compact package.

As for Srajan Ebaen's review, and I have read many of his reviews, I thought it was good although he gets wordy with all of his analogies and metaphors. Some may find it interesting and amusing but for me his writing style adds too many unnecessary side trips that become a chore to wade through trying to get at the heart of the information. It was interesting to read the comparisons between the DIA-250 and the DIA-400. Naturally, as is true for my review also, it boils down to individual opinions and should not carry any influential weight until you have had the opportunity to audition these components yourself, preferably in your own sound system. Beyond that you are simply making a leap of faith.

There are so many fabulous audio components to choose from today. It is nearly impossible to make a bad choice in nearly all price ranges. Every audio component has a personality but much like a time honored recipe for a great dish where spices can influence the flavor in one direction or another, ultimately the end results remain fabulous.

    Re: Gato Audio

Thanks for those comforting words I know that whatever I buy it will be so much better than anything I had before. But the problem is that I am not able to audition anything which interests me. I had chance to listen Gryphon, Mimetism, GamuT, Accuphase, Naim, Accustic Arts, Electrocompaniet - all of them financially well beyond my reach. Of amplifiers which I can afford - I can't audition a single one, so it is a question of faith. I narrowed it down to JOB, and now to Gato Audio too only because there's an ex-demo unit for cheaper price. I hope to get absolutely the most for my money, because I don't think I'll be able to buy another amp for a long time.

I pretty much like Srajan's style

    Re: Gato Audio

    Hi Mate
I got one of those, except its the new Gato Audio DIA-250S.
I tried several amps before i bought the DIA-250S, including Arcam A39, Naim Pre/Power, Hegel 160 and Devialet 120, but none of those could compete with the DIA-250. (Yes, i compared those to the old DIA-250)
The Devialet was probably just as good, but lacked power and was much more expensive.

The 250S is absolutely deadquiet. Its very neutral, perhaps a tad warm. It has a very good dac, (better than the Sabre ESS90018 DAC i had before. (Burson Audio Conductor)).
Its very detailed and has a big soundstage with lots of air around instruments.
It looks gorgeous, it has a very nice remote, and i simply love the amp. It works perfect with my Raidho X-1's
I don't think you can find a better integrated amp with dac at this price.

    Re: Gato Audio

Forgive me for writing here what I wrote in the JOB INTegrated thread too, but I need all the help I can get, and fast

I only left two options. I gave up on 225, and it's either class A-B JOB INT or class D Gato Audio DIA-250. There is only one person on the planet who heard both amps. Srajan Ebaen. And he gave me his opinion today, although in a shortest possible way, and I don't intend bothering him any more.

The Gato sounds a lot warmer and thicker. I far prefer the INT - but that's my taste, with my speakers and my room.

Now, the funny thing is, try searching around the web for definition of warm and thick sound. You'll find many different opinions. So what exactly Mr. Srajan thinks when he says warmer and thicker? And would I feel the same while listening with MY ears to MY music coming from MY speakers in MY room? And for my music, is warmer and thicker amplifier better or worse option? Perhaps some of you would be willing to share your thoughts about this?

I'll write you what I listen to most of the time.
But first - the room is 19 square meters, speakers are Sonus faber Toy Towers. I listen only to CDs, I have 1000 discs with all types of music, mostly older music, not much modern production gets to my ears. I like my bass strong and well defined, but not overwhelming, not "spilling" everywhere; I like mids clear not muddy; most importantly, I can't stand screeching sound in high frequencies.
    I listen:
Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Queen, Saxon, Rainbow, Nightwish, Therion, Motorhead, Grace Jones, Donna Summer, Giorgio Moroder, Boney M., ABBA, Kraftwerk, Yello, Blondie, Beastie Boys, KC & The Sunshine Band, Duran Duran, Prince, Johnny Cash, Simon & Garfunkel, Basil Poledouris, John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, Bob James - to name some of the more important artists I have in my collection.
Based on my tastes, can you conclude - is "a lot warmer and thicker" sound RIGHT or WRONG for me? What warmer and thicker sound means to you?
    THANK YOU.

I'm not sure what he means with thick sound. I don't think it sounds thick...or thin. It sounds very detailed, open and transparent.
I don't know the Job Int, but it seems a lot of people in here love Job's a lot, so i don't think you can go wrong with either.

    Re: Gato Audio

I have finally decided. Yesterday I ordered Gato Audio DIA-250. Today it should be sent from Denmark. It's more expensive than JOB INTegrated, and probably somewhat less great sounding, but still I expect it to be a top-class high-end. I choosed Gato mainly because of functionality, it has much more input/output options than JOB. I would have problems with JOB and because of that - extra expenses and less choices when choosing head-amp or whatever (JOB has no outputs and a poor choice of inputs). I love the look of the JOB INT, but Gato look is on another level. I have also decided which headphone amplifier to buy - Audeze Deckard. And the rest of this year I have to find the right cables: power cords for DIA-250 and Deckard; RCA interconnect from amp to head-amp; interconnect from Blu-ray player to amp (probably coaxial); interconnect from CD player to amp (probably analog balanced); speaker cables.

    Congratualtions Mate
Its a pure gem. Great looks, sounds superb, a lot of functionality. You are gonna love that amp, like i do mine.
I have purchased the cheapest powercords from Shunyata. The Venom 3. It lowered the noisefloor, and made the backgrund blacker - i think is the correct audiophile term

    Re: Gato Audio

    Thanks guys!

Jaws - guys from Gato Audio prefer WireWorld cables. I'm narrowing down the list, started with around hundred brands, now I'm coming to 40. I need to narrow it to less than 20 before starting with specific inquiries. At this stage, German VIABLUE seems very interesting to me. But I must consider WireWorld because they (Gato) prefer it, and it's their amp. Shunyata is on the list too.

Double-D - I have walnut speakers and mahogany floor - so what you think which cover?

    Hi Mate
I actually asked Frederik Johansen from Gatoaudio excactly the same question about powercords, and he said he had good experiences with the blue and coppercolored cables from Wireworld.
But, i had read so many good reviews about the Shunyata Venom3, that i took the chance, and purchased it without demoing it, and glad i did so. Very nice and a very cheap cable.
Maybe you can try a few at home, before deciding

I got it with high gloss walnut also

    Dan...
Very good review you wrote, and one of the reasons i considered the amp in the first place. Luckily i'm almost neighbor to Gatoaudio, so it was easy to loan a demoamp.

The one i bought is the new DIA-250S, and it should be better than the "old" DIA-250. And it has AptX bluetooth now. A nice extra feature.
Maybe you should consider to update your review

OR, perhaps try out the new preamp PRD3-S and mono poweramps PWR-222. I have a feeling they will be seriosly good! (Sorry, i can't post links or pics yet...)

Bo.......Thank you for your compliment. It is appreciated.

The newest model Gato Audio DIA-250S and DIA-400S integrated amplifiers have been refined and improved over the previous models. Bluetooth compatibility is a nice feature as well. I have little doubt the improved filtering and refinement of the analog output section yields fabulous performance. Both Gato Audio integrated amplifiers are impressive.

    Re: Gato Audio

Frederik told the same to me, "blue" and "copper", but those are just colours, the real names are Electra 7, Aurora 7 and Stratus 7, if he was referring to current models. I have no idea which one I will buy in the end, it will also depend on the availability of different lenghts. For example, if I need 0.5 meter power cord, and brand X offers only 1.5 meter cords, then I will seek another brand which has shorter ones. Shunyata, WireWorld, ViaBlue, AudioQuest, Oyaide, Siltech, Transparent, Voodoo, Furutech... many choices. Plus, I can order custom made ones of top quality, made right here where I live, but I may have to wait long.
So you actually know guys from Gato and their workplace? Nice.

    I don't need
Bluetooth compatibility and I prefer not to have any of that stuff around my gear. I'm old school, not by my age, but that's my style.

    Re: Gato Audio

Mate.......Very sorry to hear about your new Gato Audio DIA-250 arriving with issues. I can tell you unequivocally, the DIA-250 should produce no hiss. The DIA-400 I reviewed was dead silent with my Sonus faber Amati Anniversario speakers (92dB sensitivity), even with the volume at 50 and nothing playing. Something is definitely wrong. Have you tried disconnecting everything from the DIA-250 and connecting your new headphone amp to the Gato's output to listen for noise without the speakers connected. If the noise remains I think I would ask for a replacement component rather than a repair to the one you have.

As for the display, it is supposed to have a single white LED remain lit when the display is turned off. That is the indication that it is powered on. Changing the input or adjusting the volume with activate the display momentarily, then return to a single LED lit. That is spelled out in the owner's manual.

Mate.......I doubt it unless the speaker cables are somehow picking up some type of interference between the DIA-250 and the speakers. When that happens it is usually 60 cycle hum, not a hiss sound. It is suspicious that the hiss changes when the display is on or off.

I would try connecting the headphone amplifier to the amp with nothing else connected to the amp, no source or speakers. Then try listening with your headphones to see if you can detect the hiss you hear when the speakers are connected. Since the DIA-250 variable output is before the amplification stage it will at least tell you if the noise is in the line stage or the output section.

You can always give another pair of speaker wires a try is you have some handy. The process of elimination may deliver positive results.

Something else comes to mind. Is the amplifier on a dedicated circuit or does it share the circuit with lighting and other electrical loads? Are there any lighting dimmers in your room that may be on the same circuit?

Mate.......Instead of powering the amp from your power conditioner, try powering the DIA-250 directly from the wall to see if that makes a difference.

    Re: Gato Audio

I would personally say that you should not hear a hiss. I know on my system if there is no signal going (in between songs, etc.) it is dead silent no matter where I have the volume set. I do not remember ever detecting any kind of extraneous noise. I have been amazed at how quite the equipment is because I recall having small amounts of noise back in my old days.

I just ran a test on my system... I started playing a DSD download (Alan Parson which is completely irrelevant ). I paused the playback as a test and turned the volume up, way up.... I never ever listen above about 30 on the dial... anyway, at all the way up to the maximum which is 80 there is not a bit of noise. Hiss, hum, etc.; I put my ear directly at the speaker and it is dead silent.

If you are hearing a hiss I would personally say that is not normal and if the manufacture is saying this is I would be looking for a new manufacture. Just my opinion for what it is worth.

    Hi Mate
    Congrats on your amp.
I'm pretty sure there must be something else making the hiss than the amp. I live in a very old building with old powerwiring and cables, and i have had problems with hums before. Both a 300B tube amp i owned had a slight hum, and a pre/power combo from Naim i had on demo before buying the Gato hummed like crazy. But no problems with the Gato. Its deadsilent.

Try what Randy and Double-D says, and perhaps try the amp in a friends stereo if you can.

Btw, i love the volumeknob, and they way the numbers goes up and down

If the shippers in your part of the world are anything like our UPS, there is no telling what that amp has endured from the company to you. May have worked perfectly before some "shipping adjustments." I had them "flat drop" a preamp so hard several months ago that they broke the transformer loose and knocked the faceplate logo out. Box looked new.

Yesterday I tried out two other speaker cables, and the hiss from tweeters is exactly the same with all 3 cables.
You will get a properly working unit if you're returning it to the manufacturer.

Mate, the Job INTegrated also has a little bit of hiss. I hear a different hiss from tweeter and woofer. But only with my ear to a speaker. At 10cm distance the hiss drops below audible level suddenly. Changing the volume does not change the hiss level. I've tested all this. So for the Job it's no problem at all. My previous amp had a 50Hz humm I could here from my listening position when no music was playing.

I find it hard to believe that a manufacturer would send you their personal demo unit not operating properly. If they had heard what you hear they could have diagnosed and fixed it in minutes in house before shipping. If it was "flat dropped" by shipper it is very possible that something got knocked loose that you may or may not see if you "popped the hood." Many times board connectors can come loose from rough handling. I am sure they will take care of you as I'm sure they don't want this sort of notoriety on a forum to come up in a google search of their gear. You need to give then the benefit of the doubt as Dan and others have found them different than what you describe. And no the Class D aspect has nothing to do with the noise. Also as an owner I can assure you that Job gear is not perfect either.

    Re: Gato Audio

Hello everyone - finally registered & thought I'd jump in here, as I've had a DIA-250 since May 2014.

Mate - did you get a replacement? What was the outcome?

I guess I was a fairly early adopter in the States, and maybe because of that there were couple of hiccups with the amp. Michael Kelly at Aerial Acoustics (the US distributor) was very quick to respond and solve the issues. About seven months in, the amp produced no sound. So Aerial replaced it. About ten months after that the display started behaving strangely, with some of the LED dots being dimmer than others. Gato had designed a new display to solve that issue, so I returned the amp again and got a new display. Everything has been fine since.

I had been very interested in the newer class D technologies, and was lusting after the Rowland Continuum S2, but when I found out Gato was using the same Pascal module as Rowland for half the price, I went for it. I'm a sucker for design & aesthetics so it's a good fit that way too.

It makes me wonder how much better the new "S" version is?

    Re: Gato Audio

    Hi Mrppv
I got the first "S" model Gato Audio made. I'm not sure how much better it is, but according to their website, its "More details, better micro dynamics and more "air" around the performing musicians."
My DIA 250S is around ½ year old now, and works flawlessly, and it sounds fantastic with my small Raidho's.

I can understand you view on the Rowland Continuum S2. Another amp thats using the Pascal module (heavily modified like Gato's)is the Aavik U300.
I heard the 30000$ Aavik U300 amp from Raidho at an Ansuz demo in a local shop. The speakers were Raidho x-1 and x-3's and a full loom of Ansuz stuff. Cables, Sparkz, Darkz etc.
I own the X-1. So when i came home, i found the same tunes on Tidal (we got a playlist) used for the demo. I know my audiophile memory is short, and it was a demo, but i didn't think the Aavik sounded better than my Gato Audio DIA-250S. That said, i'm sure if i had the Aavik at home for a direct comparison with the Gato, the Aavik would be the best. (i certainly hope so!)

I think the Gato is priced right. You do get some hardware for your money. But the Aavik at 30000$ ? They are practically the same. Same Pascal board, a dac, remote etc. You could buy 3 small cars in Denmark for that kind of money, and cars are very expensive in Denmark! I'm not sure why they price the Aavik so high. 7-800% more expensive than the Gato Audio!
    Probably because they can...

But i guess its the law of diminishing returns. Those last few % costs A LOT.

    Re: Gato Audio

    Thanks for the welcomes...

Jaws - have not seen/heard any Aavik products in person but they look interesting. And yes, as we all know, the pricing of audio gear can seem illogical; as it is with any luxury item or product that appeals to the senses. I too think the Gato is priced fairly. Someday I would like to hear an Ncore based amp for comparison to Pascal. I'm curious about the stuff that Nord is doing… Gato has them beat on style, though.

Wonder if the "S" improvements factor more in the pre-amp, or power amp, or DAC sections. I'm not using the DAC in my DIA-250.

I am new to the the Forums, situated in Germany. I had a Gato Dia 250. Although I miss the looks and elegance of the Gato, I am glad the Amp is gone. The first generation Class D Gatos have a very special high resolution sound. I read the new Modells (S) have much improved. I listend to a Ice Powered Class D Amp and enjoyed the sound much more: less resolution, less stress (heights).
In most class D Amps, as I understood, the audio signal is "transported" by a high frequency wave...which made listening to music with the Gato impossible for me. I chatted with Srajan from the mentioned 6moons online magazine and he confirmed that some people - like me - are sensitive for this wave and frequency. I would love to go class D (Devialet?) but learned my lesson.
