    Burmester

I just don’t hear or read much about this brand anymore. Can’t remember the last time I heard or read something about it. Ever since Dieter passed away in 2015, there hasn’t been much action for the brand over here.

Is it different in other parts of the world?

    Re: Burmester

Hi, that’s more or less always been the case. They don’t make too much noise. Though they came up with their mighty 159 mono amps a few years back.

I have been using the 911 mk3 mono power amps and the 088 Pre since 2010 and I love them. I have heard other amps but never felt the urge to change.

One of the best amplifiers out there.

    Cheers

    Re: Burmester

Very nice power amps. But Burmester have not really released anything interesting since the 911 mk3 almost a decade ago.

They have launched a media player for 20k, and are partnering with Mercedes on car audio. But nothing that would excite me.

Me too, I very much enjoy my 077, 100 and 948. Some of the best stuff out there I also love the fact that they don't change models all the time.

My Porsche TTS is equipped with their stereo option.
Better than the lower Bose option, but nothing really exceptional in sound quality!

    Re: Burmester

    Hi,

Actually they have released their signature series mono amps and speakers in the last 3 years- they keep a relatively low profile. I find that their products compete with the best out there, regardless, in sound quality and build.

'Cos there is very little difference between the two. I have researched the subject on my Cayenne, which has Bose. As it turned out, the only part that might be supplied by Burmester is the AMT tweeter (but I doubt Burmester is manufacturing drive units themselves, so Porsche might be getting those tweeters directly from the manufacturer). The rest of the components - speakers, amps are almost the same for both Bose and Burmester and are made by the same OEM manufacturer (amps are made by Harman, if I remember correctly; speakers are probably made by Bosch/Isophon, as they make most drive units for VW/Audi/Porsche).

So the whole "Burmester sounds system" or "Bose sound system" is a more marketing than anything else to me.

I would not be surprised, if both systems were developed by the exact same inhouse audio engineers and Porsche only pays for the nice Bose or Burmester logo they stick on top.

There is definately not a $5000 or what is the cost of upgrade between those systems in extra parts. More like $100-200 in OEM parts pricing. I bet Porsche managers are laughing on the way to the bank everytime someone orders the Burmester system

    Re: Burmester

The Stereo mag featured an article on the Burmester signature line a few months ago. Of course, this is not a technical article or review but gives some idea of what the company hasn’t been upto on the home audio front.

I never knew that, but considering that Porsche is the most profitable car company (per car basis) I am not surprised.

I was never impressed with the Bose or Burmester systems in Porsche. Porsche used to have a non branded audio system that is probably just fine when you consider that most folks want to listen to the engine. However, that barebone audio did not come with other features (like HD radio, BT, etc.) that were only offered with the Bose/Burmester packages. That was the way Porsche “enticed” you to pay extra for the other audio packages. Of all the car audio systems that I have heard, Audi’s B&O is the best sounding.

    Re: Burmester

It’s too bad Burmester doesn’t do a better job of marketing/distributing their products in the US. They make some good stuff but it doesn’t get promoted as well as other competing brands.
