For those familair with Gryphon Antileon and Mephisto, the Apex sounds even more like a Mephisto - even more dynamic, more resolution etc. Not a romantic sounding amp by any means. A friend of mine had one at home with the new preamp.

The SV-500 has 50 watts@8 ohms and 80 watts@4 ohms Should be more than enough to meet your volume needs. AudioAdvisor in Grand Rapids MI has them new and it's in your price range.

You might enjoy a Marantz Reference model before they began including the DAC. I'm not overly familiar but warm was my thoughts when hearing an Audio Analogue integrated. Quad as well.

Might want to check out a Vincent integrated. It would fit your description.
