Thread: Room Acoustics Analyzer Help (No, it's not REW)

I've had a go with REW, but gave up. Far too complicated for me.

I just want a rough idea what the sound in my room is doing. I find all this sort of thing difficult to understand so I'm now going to try and do it an easier way. It won't be as accurate but it will give me an idea.

I have 2 Android apps to try:

Both apps have good feedback but haven't a clue if one is better than other:

The RTA app has good feedback but you get more features if you pay a little bit of money, which I don't mind doing if it is better.

The Spectroid analyzer app seems to have everything I want aswell, and it automatically shows you the peaks and dips, which I think you have to pay for with the RTA app.

I don't know if one is better than the other or if one shows more important information than the other.

I also have 2 test cds by Stereophile magazine. I'm sure one of these cds has a test sound which has the whole audio spectrum that I can play and whichever app I use will show me roughly where there are peaks and dips.

From the 2 cds, which track should I be playing. I just can't work it out. And what does 'Uncorrelated' mean next to some of the tracks?

If the 2 CDs I have don't have the correct track to play, any idea where I can download a sine sweep of 20Hz to 20kHz, and I guess I only need 16bit, anything higher would be a waste as I will be using the built in Mic of my mobile?

I've come across this but I'm not sure which one to choose, and what is the difference between 'Linear' and 'Logarithmic'?

I've been trying to analyze my room for many weeks and I think this is going to be the easiest way of doing it.

The way I want to do it is the simplest for me, just to get a rough idea.
I am going to get acoustic panels and will email the results I get.
They might not be accurate enough for Gik but they might be.

All I need now is the correct sine sweep file I can download but I'm not sure which is best.

I don't know why this is being so difficult.
I can't seem to download what I need to download from the Audiocheck website.

I forgot I posted this and was about to ask the same question.

I manged to get a reading using the 'Spectroid' Android app, which I used on my mobile. I used the mobile microphone (so the results will not be very accurate).

I played a 16bit WAV full Sine Sweep and started the Spectroid recording (I will have missed the beginning second or two of the sine sweep due to having to start playback of the sine wave and then starting Spectroid).

I don't understand what the results show.

Can anyone explain the results (if they tell you anything)?

First of all, a mic built into a phone or tablet is likely not going to give you great results vs. a USB mic for a PC or a mic used with an App. I don't know a thing about your (mobile) device, room, main speakers, sub settings (are the subs on or off with the graph? - what happens if they are on vs. off?) or what levels are being played, but it looks like there's a bass peak. I likely have that test CD somewhere. An SPL meter with a good mic might give you a better idea playing the disc tones.

No idea about that app, but that looks like an internal soundcard electrical, not acoustic measurement. An in room acoustic measurement would have a noise floor of at least 30db (usually much higher), not -100 ;-).
Something is terribly wrong. I do have a "AudioTool" android app on my phone that works reasonably well...and to me, was relatively easy to use.

I mentioned (Studio Six Digital) Audio Tools to him in a PM and Amazon UK does sell the Dayton Audio mic (that Parts Express sells here).
