Hello,

I am proposed these two Accuphase preamps and
I have some questions

1) Strangely, C-280 produced in 1982 looks more modern style Accuphase
then C-200 L and V which are looking more vintage style, though produced later, respectively in 1984 and 1987. Why this is so?

2) C-280 is much more expensive then C-200 L
Is C-280 really much better then C-200 L which has already an excellent reputation?

3) From the point of view of maintainability for they are both old stuff.

are they both serviceable and can be reasonably easy repaired by a specialist or there is a difference and one is more difficult (and expensive) to repair then another?

All suggestions are welcome.

Thank you

Serge

Hi Serge,

1. The C-200 was originally introduced in 1973 and the cosmetics didn't really change much over the years, so the later versions (L and V) don't have the updated cosmetics of the 280. They do however borrow from the 280 internally. The C-200L changed the internal arrangement of the cards to emulate the 280. If you look at the rear panel of both, they look identical.

2. I haven't heard them, so I can't offer a direct comparison. What I can say is that the C200L and the 280 basically share the same specs. But, the 280 is completely dual mono and has a much more robust power supply. The 200L has tone controls, a headphone amp, and the front panel inputs.

3. As to repair, Accuphase wants their authorized repair centers to take care of that. They don't make the schematics or service manuals available to the public. A few have been leaked, but you'll have to look around for them.

Good luck!
Jeff
