Raspberry Pi Hi-Fi tube amp just got better

Pi 2 Design the developer behind the 503HTA, Hybrid Tube AMP/DAC is a small Hat size Raspberry Pi add-on has upgraded the design to add new features.

It has added an analogue line in the 503HTA can be used to the quality of a tube amplifier more audio sources. Standard 3.5mm jack takes in up to 2Vrms and has an input impedance of 10kohm.

The project is attracting interest on Kickstarter crowd-funding website because it gives the Raspberry Pi an analogue audio amplifier for driving stereo headphones.

It connects to the PI I2S port and its Burr-Brown PCM5102A DAC drives a single 12AU7 tube gain stage with solid state Class-A output.

It is designed to drive stereo headphones from 32 to 300 ohm quite easily.
Pi 2 Design has also added an improved audio quality potentiometer which uses conductive plastic for low noise and long life.

An On/Off switch is also included. Coupled with the two level gain switch. This means it can drive most headphones from 32 to 300 ohms.

There is a new 6.35mm headphone jack.

The capacitors have been upgraded to Nichicon Muse (KZ) Output Caps and Nichicon Fine Gold (FG) Cathode Bypass Caps.

The 503HTA also has an on-board 5V at 3A regulator, thus allowing the HAT and the Pi to be powered from a single, 24V external supply.

The 503HTA can now also be operated without the Raspberry Pi. In this mode, the DAC is bypassed and analogue in comes directly to the tube stage from the 3.5mm Input Jack.

The tube audio amp/DAC is in the middle of a Kickstarter campaign which is already well beyond its target.

The first 503HTAs with a JJ Electronics 12AU7 tube will sell for $99 including the 24V at 2A supply.
