One shot of Whiskey and One shot of Rye - What would you choose from list?

I am heading to a local Gastro Pub this afternoon that recently opened a Whiskey Bar upstairs.

My wife and I intend to try a few shots before going downstairs for a Burger and a few fine brews.

We are currently working our way thru Jefferson's Reserve after being turned on the Jefferson's Ocean.

I have been told that Rye is a little sweeter than Bourbon so I want to try one.

Look at the list from this link and tell me what you would pick for one of each.

I am a big fan of the Whistle Pig. I also have enjoyed the Bulliet Rye. Enjoy them!

Only Whisky for me please . Out of those, try Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban.

This is a lovely tipple on the rocks, the 21 year is just oh so smoother by a tad. Macallan 18yr - Highland 86 28 Sorry, haven't done Bourbon or Whiskey since I was last in jail.

I'd do the Blantons on the bourbon list and the Angels Envy rye. Both are amazing, especially the Angels Envy - very special!

What a cool experience, something we have never done. First of all, the Iron Abbey is a EU style Gastro Pub with Soccer on all the TVs and the inside looks like a Medieval Castle. Stone and heavy wood. They just recently opened The Loft, an upstairs Specialty Beer Store and dedicated Whiskey Bar. The Beer section had lots of shelves full of stuff, some familiar and some not. I was thinking no big deal, until I saw a door I thought was the back room. No, it was THE room with floor to ceiling, and wall to wall beers of the world. Each style and taste marked at the top of sections. Pretty impressive.

We were having beers with dinner so we took a seat at the Whiskey Bar and begged for an education which was promptly given and well done. We told him what we had so far and what tastes we liked and he pointed out what would match as well as describe many differences. Much to take in all at once while getting stoned .

We decided to start off with the lower end flight, which was 3 - 1/2 shots of $9 and below from the lists. We also decided after listening to go with 1- Bourbon, 1- Rye, and 1- Scotch. All were good and next trip we will step up to the next tier of flights.

    This is what we had

Bourbon - Bookers 126 Proof (was a $9.50 shot but they included it in the cheap flight) Very smooth and did not seem to have the burn that Jefferson's Reserve has, even at this proof.

Rye - Knob Creek Can't even remember now but I liked it

Scotch - Ardbeg 10 which was really interesting and smokey, which is a flavor I love (Lapsang Tea)

So it looks like we have found yet another High End hobby of trying them all.

    Sounds like a great occasion.

Four Roses Single Barrel is currently my go-to bourbon these days. Booker's is way too potent for my wussy palate.

As to the Scots, if you enjoy smoky and peaty stuff, here are a couple in order of preference: Bowmore, Laphroig, Lagavulin.

They are all btw from the same very small island (Isle of Islay), well worth a visit.

Re: One shot of Whiskey and One shot of Rye - What would you choose from list?

Bourbon: The Four Roses limited small batch is by far the best pour on the list. And it's hard to find.

Rye: Whistlepig Boss Hog is excellent but it looks like it's priced too high. Otherwise the Willet 2 yo is very tasty for a young rye.
