Love those old school far-field theater large format systems. The beautiful JBL Paragon always seemed more to my living room size.

Big Old Horns produce a Big Old Sound which can not be replicated with modern speakers.

    Re: Big old horns!

Back in 1968 I owned a pair of Altec A7 speakers. I drove them with a pair of McIntosh MC30 mono tube power amplifiers, a Dynaco PAS3 preamplifier, and a Dual 1019 turntable with a Shure V15 type II moving magnet cartridge. Those speakers rocked that old Victorian house in San Francisco.
Those were the days, at least the one's I can remember. .

I wonder how those A7 speakers would sound now in a home since they were never designed for home use? Altec has a bunch of cool vintage home speakers that are horn based and some of them command good money.

Mark.......I also owned a pair of Altec Valencia speakers for years. I drove them with a McIntosh MA230 integrated amplifier, solid state preamp and 30 watts per channel tube power amp and a single chassis. The Valencia's had the same 15' woofers, plus the same horn and compression drivers as the Voice of the Theater but were easier to blend into home decor.

Rance.......The A7's were huge and ugly but the could fill a room with sound that seemed like a live performance. The old Victorian house in San Francisco that I shared with a friend had 10' ceilings, and the room where the speakers were set up was 16' x 25'. The Altecs managed to work well in that room. They were efficient at 102 dB with 1 watt measured at 6 feet. The McIntosh MC30 mono tube amps never broke a sweat. These speakers could rattle the windows and the floor. The house always had people coming over and the music never stopped playing.
