    Aurender A10 - network player/streamer + DAC

Looks like Aurender just announced a new category of product for CES 2016 (like Lumin did with the Lumin U1):

    http://www.digitalaudioreview.net/20...-streamer-dac/

"A10 is a server/streamer with in-built DAC whose twin AKM4490 chips decode to dual mono analogue circuitry. “The A10 is a N100H with a DAC in a full width chassis” says Aurender’s John Paul Lizars."

Digital audio goes in, analogue audio comes out – via balanced XLRs or single-ended RCAs – no external DAC required. Content can be sourced from the cloud or via the A10’s 2TB internal HDD storage. Digital audio is cached in a 128Gb SSD before being sent downstream for decoding...

The A10’s pricing is yet to be firmed up but expected to come at under US$5K with the aluminium shell “keeping manufacturing costs up there,” according to Lizars".

Sleek design and build quality, and the internal layout looks impressive and tidy.

Subject to final pricing (and sound quality), it looks like this will be a hit. Attractive combination of design, app, storage and built-in preamp without having to fiddle with a PC/MAC or NAS setup.

Would be interested your thoughts once you have caught your breath ...

P/S. Looks like Aurender and Lumin are "encroaching" into each other's space.

    Yes indeed.

The Aurender A10 is going to be a great piece, but so is the Lumin U1. Good for customers to have choices to fit their needs. Aurender N10 still has 4TB of internal storage, U1 doesn't. For some that will matter, for others it won't. Aurender A10 uses completely different DAC chip's from Lumin. Different sounds.

Fun times! I'm glad I carry both of these amazing brands!

For those without a DAC and the desire for a all in one device it sounds like a winner. I just picked up a Melco streamer and like it for the $1500 price tag. Although you need a DAC still which I already have. Anyhoo, sounds like a winner for sure.

At the estimated price of US$5k, there is scope for a higher priced model to compete with the Lumin A1

Melco/Dela is so much cheaper in Japan...

All Aurender models are upgradeable if you want/need a larger internal hard drive. You should consult a local dealer to help you though. The A10 does offer an ambitious volume control as well as D/A conversion.

I heard this A10 again this weekend (which by the way, the A10 is fully MQA compatible). Definitely a great sounding piece.

The A10 uses the smaller of two drives used in their units. So because of this, 4TB is currently the largest size available. In the future I suppose its possible a greater capacity drive could become available. But considering 4tb drives of this size have only just become available and future is SSD, don't bet on it.

Yes the A10 can be hooked directly to an amplifier with the volume control being excellent.

Sound wise I am really really happy. The DAC is better than I expected, this is one smooth sounding unit.

It's packed with conveniences, the app is one of the best and its MQA compatible to boot.

    A winner, I love it.

    There, my two cents.

Wow I'm surprised, the first thing that stood out for me was how smooth it sounded. Highly detailed was not something that came to mind. Anyways it still probably needs more time to break in for all of us that recently got one. I imagine our impressions may change over time.

    Re: Aurender A10 - network player/streamer + DAC

No where near as smooth as the A1. The Lumin A1 optimizes digital that sounds like Analog. And the Aurender uses the AKM chip. That's the same chip Esoteric uses. Excellent sounding CD/SACD players, certainly not lacking detail.

I'm not saying one is better than the other. Very system dependent. But what I am saying, is that the Aurender A10 is absolutely unmatched at its price point AND, let's not forget, it's MQA compatible. A little future proofing goes a long way.

If I had a budget of ~$5-6K, that's what I would be buying. No doubt.

All good Mike, but I find what chip a unit is using has very little to do with how it sounds. The analog section after the chip is what makes or breaks it (according to me anyways... ;-)).

I respectively don't agree. Chips have certain characteristics which are common across all platforms. Sabre is a perfect example. Same with Wolfson. Now the amount of DAC chips used can improve the overall sound, but the underlying character still comes through in the end. IMO of course.

    Re: Aurender A10 - network player/streamer + DAC

The chip is obviously a very important ingredient, no doubt. I just don't believe it's possible to describe the general sound of a DAC based on the chip used.

We will just have to agree to disagree :-)

    Mike,

Which one you preferred to pair with Devialet? Fun times! So many to choose from....Aurender/Lumin/Melco. I don't think DAC is necessary when connecting to the Devialet via AES or Coaxial or USB and analog input might not be good choice as it goes through multiple conversions.

For some that will matter, for others it won't. Aurender A10 uses completely different DAC chip's from Lumin. Different sounds.

Fun times! I'm glad I carry both of these amazing brands!

Aurender N100H if budget is an issue. The N10 is definitely a step up in sound, but it's triple the price, so I'm not sure of your budget. The Devialet sounds excellent with USB, so having USB only on the Aurender N100H is perfectly fine and I like the look of the N100H with the smaller Devialet footprint. I will say this, most customers who start out with the N100H end up upgrading to the N10 because they love the interface, the sound and just want "more" of it.

    Hi,

A quick question on the A10 - analogy filters : high current, low current & min current.

Any idea what will they do ? Tried while listening to music to switch around. Donesn't seem to have any impact at all.
    Regards, EH.

B4 A10, was streaming with OPPO 105 from Synology NAS.
Comparing: more micro detail, smoother and better dynamics.
When playing DSD file - OMG, very good. Can sort of sense the "emotion" of the singer.

Cyril - A10 is a real sleeper product. Volume control, great sounding DAC, internal storage, MQA compatible, great app, good looking, great footprint, reasonable price.

Currently, the A10 is limited to playing 22/44 and 24/48 file even with tidal soft decoding will not play up to 96Khz resolution?

    Thanks

Yes. Firmware Update coming very soon for full blown MQA. It's already been certified.
