    André - - - Keep it simple system
    Amp = Chord CPM-2600
    Source = Chord One
    Speakers = Acoustat 1+1s highly modified
    Life without Acoustat is possible BUT senseless.

    DSCI0392.JPGDSCI0394.JPGUniversity S6 Master Series From Atomic Warehouse.jpg

    The 2nd oldest (shown in the first 3 pics) are a used pair of late 50s/early 60's 12" Coaxial Pioneer drivers (that look very much like some Bauer Klangfilm WIGO-like drivers I've seen on ebay and in internet searches), soon to be experimented with in Open Baffle 'enclosures' (like a 'Basic Betsy' - I'll expand/interpolate the measurements for using a 12" driver instead of an 8")... Have tried on various audio sites to get someone/anyone who knows something/anything about these, but so far no info other than what was provided by the guy who I got them from ( and they are not PAX 30-A - at least not from pics I've found online...) ANYBODY THAT CAN PROVIDE SOME INFO? IT WOULD BE APPRECIATED!

    BUT MY OLDEST COMPONENT is my pair of University Master Series S6 (3-way) lowboy-style speakers; bought used from a great vintage store - The Atomic Warehouse in Harrisburg Pa. - about 4 years ago. (YES - I drove there with a van and picked them up). I believe these were origionally available as a kit; (the story I was told is): they were made by a man in the Harrisburg area who owned an Audio Store - he used these in his home. One was made in the Mid-50s (for mono use), the 2nd sometime later when stereo entered the scene (although they are obviously a matched pair; - speakers are not mirror imaged). Wood Cabinets (I think they are Mahogany)...I origionally powered them with a tube preamp and low power (like 20 watts) Heathkit amp, then a Stromberg Carlson ASP 422 tube amp direct, then with a Macintosh MA 2105 direct, now with either an Onkyo A7 Integrated or a Wolze Line Level Tube Preamp and a Nikko DC Alpha 230... Beautiful Cabinets that rely Beautiful Sound.

    ENJOY YOUR MUSIC.

    Still in use, my Goldmund Reference turntable (bought used) is almost 30 years old, still in my main system.
    My Yamaha NS1000M speakers (bought new) are probably a bit older, I can't remember exactly when I bought them, they are in my bedroom now.
    My Proac EBS speakers (ebay) are in my study and probably about 32 now.

    Probably my REL Precedent tube tuner. Or maybe my 1954 Western Electric 300b tubes. Though my Garrard 301tt is the same period.

    Re: So how old is your "oldest" component?

    My oldest component must be my good old RPM9 turntable. A whole 10 years old now! Almost vintage.... I have replaced the belt and in 2013 mounted a nice new Ortophon cartridge. Still makes wonderful music although I have to admit that I don't spin a lot of my ca. 3000 records since digital streaming is around...

    still have the original Berkeley Alpha Dac....and haven't found a need to "upgrade." Maybe they do some trickle down tech from the reference DAC in the next two years.

    So far I've cleaned years of nicotine smoke (there is lots of clear tubing that has turned tobacco brown. I dread redoing that), redone and beefed up the power supply, and checked voltages and currents. I'm just starting the F-1170 Driver Amp Blocks.

    This unit runs a little hot by design, so 3W and 5W cement resistors are going to be replaced and elevated off the boards. Two power supply 3W cements, R005 and R006, which run stupid hot, have been moved to a remote terminal strip. They were originally 22mm from the underside of one of the output caps, C820, and heat rises. I don't want them roasting a new Nichikon KZ.

    Complete recap (films where possible) and replacing 2SC458 transistors are on the agenda.

    I've attached a few photos, but I don't want to clutter up this thread. If they are a problem, or if this entire post is off topic, someone let me know and I'll delete them. EDIT: The photos are out of sequence, but you get the idea.

    I promise I'll start a proper thread with pics when I have more done.

    Your workmanship is first rate! I'm sure it is very satisfying to enjoy the fruits of your labor. My thrill is rebuilding tube amps, and while I sometimes have to stare at it sideways before I find the trouble area, that effort pays off in the end.

    My amp and preamp were both built around 2000-2001 by Deja Vu Audio's former tech Pavel so 16-17 years old on both. But they both feature vintage parts, my amp has an Accrosound transformer from the 60's and my preamp has an Alps volume pot from 1977. Took the preamp in to have the volume pot cleaned and Vu told me he remembered the pot at that time it was the best sounding one they could find so they used it already 23 or so years old.

    Aiwa F990 Cassette Deck obtain in 1983 and still kicking.

    Yeah, I am ducking all the vegetables being thrown my way right now as I can hear you saying...."Cassette Deck..Why a cassette deck?....And not even a Nak Dragon!"

    Well, boys and girls, I would put that Aiwa up against the Nak Dragon (a phenomenal deck BTW) any day and it even had Dolby C and HX-Pro (Dragon only had Dolby B if I remember correctly). ;-)

    Thanks.

    Re: So how old is your "oldest" component?

    I've come to the conclusion that the best way to add a vintage touch to a modern system is with a tuner. Vintage tuners look great, and they have the advantage of outperforming almost all contemporary tuners in sound quality. I just bought a Luxman T-110 from 1976 ($545 back then!). Although I am not about to encourage audiophiles to spend more time listening to FM radio on their $100k systems, the tuner does have a long history in the hobby and was the focus of a terrific amount of perfectionist inventive energy. Back in the day radio was so important to the culture! In Toronto we have a few stations (JazzFM and CBC Radio 2) that have excellent programming and low-compression signals. I'm having fun listening to the T-110 (5 Gangs, ceramic trimmer caps), not least because it sounds SO much better than the JCPenny MCS Receiver my Dad had when I was a kid. The sonic image is impressively clear and musical, with a substantial bottom end and extended highs. That "white fuzz" I associate with FM is not present. What a blast.

    Marantz 2270 (1976). I bought it at Bay Bloor Audio in Toronto. It was a lot of money for a UofT student!

    You mean Bay Bloor "Radio." I bought a pair of Mission Speakers there in 1993 when I was a U of T student. I used student loan money (HiFi is a necessity, right?).

    Cool! Yes, I did mean Bay Bloor Radio (oops). (Haha, I used student loan money too). Do you know if they're still in business in the Manulife Centre?
