There is an excellent iPAD app called The History of Jazz. Very interactive. Discusses various forms, who was instrumental, their discography also with YouTube links to key performances of the artist being reviewed. Really excellent information! A must have if you are a Jazz fan.

Re: Styles of Jazz Music
Count Basie - King of Swing
Oh yeah, it swings!
I'm listening to a high quality CD pressing, but I liked the Qobuz comment:
Following a brief lull earlier in the 1950s, Count Basie had rebuilt his big band by the time of this trio of studio sessions originally recorded for Clef. Among the musicians present on one or more of the dates are trumpeters Joe Newman, Joe Wilder, and Thad Jones and a reed section with Marshall Royal, Frank Foster, Frank Wess, and Ernie Wilkins, along with a dependable rhythm section anchored by Basie's longtime rhythm guitarist, Freddie Green. While none of the numbers seemed to stay in the band book for all that long, the consistently swinging performances and tasty solos make this worth the attention of swing fans. ~ Ken DrydenVivid Audio - Burmester - Hegel - Marantz - Oppo - Pioneer 60" - Wireworld

Re: Styles of Jazz Music
Bobby Hutcherson - Dialogue
Since I saw Hutcherson live in the 80s, I've been a big fan.
This is a milestone album.
I'm listening to the CD, but want to share the Qobuz comment:
Coming fresh on the heels of his groundbreaking work with Eric Dolphy, Bobby Hutcherson's debut album is a masterpiece of "new thing" avant-garde jazz, not really free but way beyond standard hard bop. Dialogue boasts an all-star lineup of hot young post-boppers -- trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, woodwind player Sam Rivers, pianist Andrew Hill, bassist Richard Davis, and drummer Joe Chambers -- and a set of imaginative compositions by either Hill or Chambers that frequently push the ensemble into uncharted territory. The result is an album bursting at the seams with ideas that still sound remarkably fresh, not to mention a strong sense of collectivity. Hutcherson has so many fine players on hand that the focus is naturally on group interaction rather than any particular soloist(s), setting up nice contrasts like the fiery sax work of Rivers versus the cooler tones of Hutcherson and Hill. Hill's pieces stand tradition on its head, twisting recognizable foundations like the blues ("Ghetto Lights"), Latin jazz ("Catta"), and marching bands ("Les Noirs Marchant," which sounds like a parade of mutant soldiers) into cerebral, angular shapes. Chambers, meanwhile, contributes the most loosely structured pieces in his delicate, softly mysterious ballad "Idle While" and the nearly free group conversations of the ten-minute title track, where Hutcherson also plays the more African-sounding marimba. What's impressive is how focused Hutcherson keeps the group through those widely varied sounds; no one is shortchanged, yet the solos are tight, with no wasted space or spotlight-hogging. Dialogue remains Hutcherson's most adventurous, "outside" album, and while there are more extensive showcases for his playing, this high-caliber session stands as arguably his greatest musical achievement. ~ Steve HueyVivid Audio - Burmester - Hegel - Marantz - Oppo - Pioneer 60" - Wireworld

Re: Styles of Jazz Music
Viktoria Tolstoy - Stations
Qobuz 24/96
I'm always on the lookout for good female jazz vocalists.
I know that in my lifetime, chances that we'll have another Ella, Sarah or Billie are very small, but I'm hopeful..
Meanwhile, we do have splendid singers, such as Cecile McLorin Salvant.
But the three divas I mentioned are still unequalled.
Viktoria Tolstoy is one of the good, but not great singers.
In the more poppy songs here on this album, she's very enjoyable, in the jazzy pieces, she holds her own quite well too.
All in all, I can recommend this.
Three stars and a half.

Re: Styles of Jazz Music
I am very much a beginner in the appreciation of jazz. I didn't have really any jazz music until 2016, when I bought a very large collection of tape safety masters, so I missed this thread until now.
I saw with interest the different classifications of jazz one of the first posts in the thread. I also saw with interest the video about the four great albums on 1959. Happens that my collection has three of the four albums, Kind of Blue and Time Out (both on 1/2" 15ips 2 track safety masters) and Ah-Um on 1/4" 15ips 2 track - with the full almost 60 minute album, instead of the 40+ album with significant cuts to several of the songs.
A few questions:
I didn't see either Miles Davis or John Coltrane mentioned in the different jazz classifications - are they generally classified in a particular jazz genre?
Are Three Blind Mice and ECM labels considered jazz - and if so what genres?
Finally, are Muddy Waters and Albert King considered jazz or something else (I have them listed as Pop/Rock in my catalogue of albums).

Re: Styles of Jazz Music
Muddy Waters and Albert King do/did not play Jazz. They are strictly blues artists.
As for what kind of Jazz Miles played, that depends. He was part of the movement that introduced Be-Bop. He single handedly changed Jazz with The Birth Of The Cool. Then again with Kind Of Blue (Modal Music). He also did it again with Bitches Brew. The same "depends" also applies to Coltrane.2Ch: Sumiko Blackbird, Rega RB300 (modified), VPI HW-19 (modified), ARC SP-9MKIII, DBX 223SX, Dyna MKIII (radically modified), Magnepan 1.7, Dual 12" DIY TL subs, 2 bridged Crown XLS-402's, 14" HP laptop/2GB USB HDD, Emotiva XDA-2

Re: Styles of Jazz Music
According to Wikipedia Three Blind Mice is a Japanese label that specializes in native Japanese Jazz artists.
From Wikipedia:
Three Blind Mice is a Japanese jazz record label founded in June 1970 as a showcase for Japan's emerging jazz performers. It has produced more than 130 albums have been released since. So far they have won the Jazz Disc Award five times in Japan. Produced by Takeshi Fujii (producer) and often recorded by the Yoshihiko Kannari, TBM created jazz records by Japanese players since the 1970s and became known for its audiophile sound quality. TBM's records captured a very important, vibrant era in the development of Japanese jazz. Stars like Isao Suzuki, Tsuyoshi Yamamoto, George Kawaguchi, Terumasa Hino and Mari Nakamoto recorded their very first albums with the label. Artists also include Shuko Mizuno's "Jazz Orchestra '73", Toshiyuko Miyama and Masaru Imada.
IME ECM is a Jazz label that also does some classical.
