Well this is an odd one I had no idea existed...
Jethro Tull hits performed by the Carducci string quartet
    Does this classify as classical?

Re: Playing right now | CD (2-Disc Set) ::

I very recently purchased and listened to ...

YoYo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble: Sing Me Home

Pretentious crap, IMHO. The selection of traditional and composer-credited pieces is seemingly haphazard; the arrangements mediocre and affected; the sound recording substandard. Furthermore some arrangements have combinations of musical style that disrespect the region of origin of the particular piece.

    NOT recommended.

Re: Classical Music Only | What You're Listening to Now, Or Very Recently | Any Mediums :

I came across a reference to this recording in a equipment review online recently and decided to pick up a copy:

Shostakovich Symphony No. 15 - Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by Bernard Haitnik

Roughly $22 on Amazon. The reviewer was right, it is a stunningly good performance and recording. There was more than once I had one of those out-of-body-you-are-there moments while I listened to the disc.

(Sadly, I tried posting the images from Amazon's site, but since I have fewer than 10 posts so far, I was denied. Cue Nelson Muntz laugh here ...)

Re: Classical Music Only | What You're Listening to Now, Or Very Recently | Any Mediums :

Starting this newly acquired box set:

    Rued Langgaard - The Symphonies
    Danish National Symphony Orchestra
    Danish National Choir
    , Thomas Dausgaard

I had this set a long time on my wish list, after a recommendation in this thread, and having heard other works from him.
As it was seriously discounted now, I purchased it.

SACD 1: Symphony no. 1 "Klippepastoraler" ("Mountain Pastorale")

Composed in 1908-11, when Langgaard was still very young (born 1893).
    Powerful yet romantic work.
    Listening to it, I smile!

My tip of the month would be the 2nd release with Enghave Barok's fantastic performance of Bach´s Cantatas.
There is only a couple of days left of the 10$ introduction sale. That is an absolute steal for this kind of sound quality.

    C.P.E. Bach - Tangere
    Alexei Lubimov

Lubimov plays a modern copy (by Chris Maene from Belgium) of a tangent piano made in 1794 by the Regenburg-based firm of Späth & Schmahl.

The pieces sound very fresh and lively.
    Light, but not cheap.
    The playing is very subtle.

Interesting, have to check this out... and luckily it is even available in MQA.

Really delicate sound, little bit like a Cembalo or Spinette.

Last night I listened to ...

Reinhold Glière: Symphony No. 3 in B minor, "Il'ya Muromets", Op. 42
~ JoAnn Falletta & Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra

Il'ya Muromets was Rus mythic hero. I'll confess I'd never heard of Il'ya, Glière, or this composition before acquiring this CD, but I can recommend it. A lively and engaging piece throughout it longish length. The sound left little to be desired and the performance sounded great to me though I'm not a musician.

    Schubert - Die Schöne Müllerin
    Christian Gerhaher
    Gerold Huber

    via Tidal

Another recommendation in the excellent 'Stereo' magazine (Jan 18).
This might be the best Müllerin I've heard so far.
(I'll have to compare with Fischer-Dieskau one of these days).
    Simply delicious.

The 5 poems of Wilhelm Müller, not used by Schubert in this Lieder cycle, are welcome intermezzos.
They do nog disturb at all.
    Beautifully read by Gerhaher.

Stream it (good quality!) of buy the album, if you are a Schubert fan!

Looking forward to your comparison, Fischer-Dieskau was an exceptional Lied- and Schubert interpret. Also Winterreise.

Fischer-Dieskau has been my favorite for Schubert, esp. Die Schoene Muellerin. Interestingly,
in the original EMI one record vinyl release (EMI ASD481), the poems are not included. However,
when Angel released the song cycle on vinyl, it was on a two record (3 sided) set which included the two spoken poems - Prologue and Epilogue. The other three poems were not included. I bought the Angel set first (before EMI's were imported into the US), and thought the poems were just part of the standard performance.

We heard Ian Bostridge sing Die Winterreise a few months ago, when he was visiting Berkeley, CA. He is quite famous for his Winterreise and has lectured at Oxford and other places about it. Interesting to see him perform, since he is quite tall and lanky and moves about the piano during the performance. He performed it straight through with no interval in the performance.

Here is a CD album with Bostridge singing all three of Schubert's song cycles - Winterreise, Schwanengesang and Die Schoene Muellerin.

He also has a book on Die Winterreise:

Here is the youtube lecture he gave at Oxford (from where he graduated) about Winterreise.

    It is a top performance.
However, I find the sound a bit dated, meaning: I do not like some of those early digital recordings very much.

I agree about the sound, an unfortunate era.

It would be intriguing to hear whether MQA would be able to sort out that mess. Have not seen a version though.

    Debussy - Quatuor & Danses
Caplet - Les Prières & Conte Fantastique
Quatuor Debussy - Marielle Nordmann - Françoise Masset - Yann Dubost
    via Qobuz

We just heard the Danses and the Conte Fantastique live, albeit with another string quartet, the Quatuor Zaïde, and for the harp pieces, with Anneleen Lenaerts, a Flemish harpist, soloist of the Wiener Philharmoniker (!).
They also played a piece from her brother Wouter Lenaerts, similar in style, Visions.
And a, splendidly played, Ravel String Quartet.
Lenaerts brought Claire de Lune, arrangement for harp, by herself.
All 5 young ladies were outstanding.

This album is very enjoyable too.
    Good recording.

By the way, Caplet is a composer that I didn't know before this concert, but that I am going to examine closer.
The work they played and that I'm listening to right now is very beautiful (Conte Fantastique, after a tale from Edgar Allen Poe).

Pierre on the harpsichord, his brother Marc on the traverse flute.
Pierre has played with Kuijken, Savall (Tous les matins du monde!), Minkowski. Marc with the same forces, also Leonhardt, and many others.
You really get the sensation these two deeply understand the composer.

    Schubert - Die schöne Müllerin

Standard performance of this so delicious masterpiece.
Fischer-Dieskau is technically as perfect as it can get.
He sings it in a sober, solemn way, and Moore is the perfect to accompany him.
The sound is very decent for a '62 recording.

    Schubert - Die schöne Müllerin

I listened twice to Fischer-Dieskau, and now again to this version.
This small comparison is hard work!

The sound is impeccable, it is of course a recording that is 55 years younger than the one above.
Gerhaher is equally very very good technically.
Huber also does a great job supporting this wonderful singer.
Fischer-Dieskau's voice maybe a little bit superior in absolute terms.
    But I prefer this version.
    It touches me more.
It provokes tears in my eyes more easily.
This goes right to my heart...

    What a delight!
Fantastic music, fantastic performance, wonderful recording.
I have the original SACD (same recording).
Good to see that PentaTone reissues multi-channel SACDs.

Based on the above comments I imported the SACD- very nice.

My impression is that the Julia outplays the orchestra at times which at times can be distant sounding compared to the closed miked violin.

    Jozua, you might be right.
We don't have that impression, as we usually have tickets for the 4th-5th row, so 8 feet from the solo violinist.
Which gives us about this sound.
    We're spoiled, I know.
