Line Magnetic 501ia tube rolling question
Any owners here? I may well purchase a s/h one of these today, if it's in top condition. This thing uses 480W.. will rolling in KT88's and rebiasing, will this have any affect on my electricity bill?

I highly doubt any tube changes will significantly affect your electrical consumption.

I’m sure the 501ia is a wonderful piece, enjoy it. Love the way it looks too.

Re: Line Magnetic 501ia tube rolling question
Listened to this amplifier on a couple of occasions and was impressed with how it looked and sounded. Yes, Joe is right, rolling tubes won't do much for power consumption. The power consumption cited at 480 watts seems excessive for a class AB design.

Re: Line Magnetic 501ia tube rolling question
I'm guessing its leaning towards class A, but then again it wouldnt be producing 100w per side if so. Bit of a mystery with just 4 kt120 tubes.. biasing perhaps?

Re: Line Magnetic 501ia tube rolling question
Yes, A bit of a mystery.
KT88's and KT120's are usually compatible* and can often be exchanged without any bias adjustments. THD @ 1KHz and continuous power output of both tubes is also very similar. KT120's can run hotter (higher plate dissipation etc.) for little or no increase in power.
I still don't understand the power consumption figure though. Running in Class A bias the output would be restricted to around 30W per channel. Class A efficiency is very low but still doesn’t account for 480 watts of power consumption.
*The KT120 is about 1/2" taller than a typical KT88 and draws more filament current from your amp's output transformer.Borresen Acoustics Loudspeakers, Borresen Model 01 Compact monitor loudspeakers with Ansuz Darkz T2s Supreme resonance control, Audio Video Manufaktur GmbH (AVM) Inspiration amplifier & streamer, Innuos Zen MKII music server, Ansuz Acoustics cables & accessories.
