Building a system around the S1mk2

    Hi guys,

Looking for advice base on experience for options to match with the S1mk2 speakers.

With use of a digital source (dedicated hifi optimized computer build).

I would lean towards more budget components of course not to a point where it won’t do justice to the speakers.

    Thanks!

Can be separates or integrated, a dac, perhaps a streamer, also if there are any recommendations for speaker cables it can be awesome.

When I had the S1 mk2's, they liked a little power. Can you perhaps give us an idea of total budget for amp/dac/cables?

Re: Building a system around the S1mk2

I used a Pass Int-60 integrated amp when I had my S1mk2 and it did a great job till I came down with a bad case of upgradeitis. I mention them since you are on a budget they can be had on the used market for less than 5K.
I compared the Diablo 120 with my Pass side by side and it was definitely a more resolving and realistic music presentation but there again the Diablo 120 is around 10K or twice the price. In the end I went for broke and got the Diablo 300.
If you can swing it the Diablos they really complement the Magicos sonically.

is there a particular sound signature you're looking for? the magicos are fairly neutral to my ears - just a touch of warmth in the upper bass and the farthest reaches of the treble resulting in a very subtle midrange bloom. what kind of music do you mostly listen to? any preference for tubes vs. solid state?

Obviously I would've suggested that you audition the Constellation Audio Inspiration Integrated 1.0 but since Mike opened with the Gryphon Diablo 120, I'd start there.

Either one! Mark (dealer in Toronto) says the Constellation integrated is superb on his Magico's.

Mike, any thoughts on the Luxman L-509x being a good match?

Yes! It’s wonderful. It doesn’t jump right at you like the Gryphon, but long term listening is so engaging.

Nothing particularly, at the moment I use with it a luxman 505u integrated but I guess it’s just temporary. I do enjoy it’s sound signature but I feel something is missing. In addition, I do like Lavardin sound signature as well and KR audio preamp sound and the old versions of sonic frontiers.
