How often does your credit card number get stolen on the Internet

I buy virtually everything on the Internet, and at least once a year I get a fraud alert from B of A. I got one last night, and now I am waiting a week for a new card to arrive. This must be my fifth or sixth one in the last 5-6 years. So far, it hasn't cost me anything other than inconvenience, but it is a pain. I do have another card, but I mostly use that on Amazon. My B of A card is my Internet card.

For me, it’s always a merchant (gas station, restaurant, etc.). It’s a PITA because you have to wait several days for a new card.

Re: How often does your credit card number get stolen on the Internet

We have not had an issue with online purchases, but as Mike said it is usually at a merchant like a restaurant. Without fail it always seems to happen in Miami for some reason.
It is an inconvenience, but fortunately the fraud detection is quite good and never causes a personal financial loss.

I didn't have it happen in many years until I got a call on Tuesday when I was out to dinner. They sent the new credit card UPS and I got it Wednesday. I generally only use the credit card except for online or getting gas.

On the life of my first born (even though I don’t have any children) my wife just screamed out two minutes ago that we got hacked...again. Happens every 3/4/5 months.

I've only had it happen once and do a large number of internet transactions. I use PayPal for online payments whenever possible since it prevents the merchant from access to your CC details.

Re: How often does your credit card number get stolen on the Internet

I’ve been lucky in the past few years and not had any issues. Previously, once or twice a year there’d be weird charges so I’d report them and get new account numbers. I’ve seen more than my share of skimmers at gas stations and banks to make me worry. I use an app on my phone now to buy gas that activates the gas pump and charges the card on file. I even save a little money. Sometimes you can not stop someone with nefarious intentions from doing harm to you. It’s very sad.

Cash is still king. Im ol skool and carry a wad for gas and restaurants. besides, when I'm in K-town for Korean BBQ or little Saigon getting a combination 1hr massage, haircut and a bowl of Pho all for the low price of $30 (was 20) they don't take no stinking CCs. Maybe because of the new immigrant influence in So. California, I'm seeing more establishments going cash only.

On a recent trip to France and the UK I noted they're still heavily tied to cash vis a vis US practices.

Re: How often does your credit card number get stolen on the Internet

One way to help prevent bad charges and fraud is to have your CC company send you a text Everytime a charge is made to your CC. In my case, I have set a limit of $5 for text notification. If a charge in excess of $5 is made I immediately get a text indicating the amount and the vendor. That way I no longer have to wait a month to get a statement. If a fraudulent charge is made, I Know about it immediately.

What's cash? I would say 98% of everything we spend is charged or a EFT. I am surprised that you found the UK and France so cash dependent. When I lived in Belgium besides your normal credit card many people also carried reloadable cards for small purchases like bread, etc.

Re: How often does your credit card number get stolen on the Internet

It is true that US credit cards have far less electronic protection than cards in most European countries, where in addition to everything we use they add a PIN, and use mobile terminals in all restaurants.

We dedicate one card to Internet purchases, because we get hacked at least twice a year. Fortunately have never lost any money, and the only real inconvenience is resetting all the Auto-pays.

    Amex, next day.

Last time it happened (which isn’t often), they automatically reset the many recurring payments I charge to that card. I expected problems, and there were none.

Re: How often does your credit card number get stolen on the Internet

Once or twice a year. It’s happened at retailers, restaurants and gas stations. We do get e-mails from the card providers when transactions are made and, threrefore, move quickly to address any suspect transactions.

It is a royal PITA but our credit card providers have done a really nice job to support us and get us replacement cards overnight.

Re: How often does your credit card number get stolen on the Internet

We have only had one issue which is surprising with all of the international travel we do. I ordered my wife a new AMEX when she had a issue with her magnetic strip. We activated the card the day it arrived and within 90 minutes we had a call from fraud protection asking if we made a UK purchase. No, we let them know the problem was on their end as the card had never been out of the house nor had we time to change to the new card number on any sites we have set up for a AMEX purchase. That new card was cancelled and no issues since.
