Re: Lumin X1
I'm trying to figure out if the (very expensive) X1 will be on par or better than a U1 mini + any other DAC in the $10K-$12K range ? Or a U1 and any other DAC in the $8K range. I really like the sound of my D2 but am very ready to experiment with higher end digital input systems. I'm building a nice library of DSD classical files and would like to squeeze every bit of audio wonder out of my new system. It seems difficult to audition these expensive pieces, although my dealer is trying to get an X1 for me to demo at home. I don't like the idea of buying a $14K piece of equipment and then sending it back. What is the norm for demoing higher end stuff ?
My system:
Power: PS Audio P15 , dedicated 20amp circuits
Front End: MSB Discrete DAC with MSB renderer
Pre: Simaudio Moon 740P
Amp: McIntosh MC462
Speakers: B&W 802 D3
Interconnects: AQ Earth XLR and Stealth Metacarbon
Speaker Cable: AQ Type 4 (20 ft runs)

Re: Lumin X1
I wouldn't worry too much with the demo. It's not more complicated for the merchant than for a cheaper product. Moreover, the X1 is not more complicated to test than the D2.
If you have a lot of DSD files, it's even more interesting. But the first thing: In order to take advantage from a Hi Res Files collection on any Lumin, a NAS is crucial (Ex Synology 718+). The speed is downright tenfold and the quality wins. I do not recommend the USB input at all.
I don't know if the step between he D1 and the D2 is very high, but it's the case between the D1 and the X1. I'm particularly impressed with the 16 bit files re-sampling. The D1 is musical, but the X1 still more musical, very colorful. The imaging is the stongest upgrade. Obviously, it is more stable and much faster. I prefere the streamer and the DAC all integrated and isolated into one box. It's an high quality integration and I'm very satisfied. A "tic" noise between random resampled tracks has been remove with the new firmware version. I can't ask for more.

Thank you. Yes, I no longer use the USB as I am now using Roon (or Lumin app) to stream the DSD files. I keep wanting to hear more about the X1. I completly get your point about integration into one box.

Re: Lumin X1
If you are in the stage of discovery where you want to "experiment" with higher end DAC's I would buy the U1 Mini to use as the transport so you have less tied up in it. Another alternative to the U1's is the Aries G1 which is about the same price as the Mini and streamer only. Auralic has it's own "software based variation" of MQA based on their years as one of the original members of the MQA group. I have used both and honestly can't tell the difference but haven't put that much time into a dedicated comparison. All I know is that it unfolds the same titles to the same resolutions as the Bridge II and the D1.

Re: Lumin X1
Also if I remember correctly from your posts here and other forums pretty much all of your gear is brand new so if I was you I would wait until I had 250+ hours on this set up before I started looking to bring in other parts for comparison. If you have the option to run it all in 24/7 then it will only take a couple of weeks but if not could be well after the first of the year. Patience will save you a lot of money and aggravation.

Re: Lumin X1
From what I know of your current gear you seem to have a fairly balanced setup. The dominant factor, the B&W's, are slightly to the right(forward/detail) side of neutral and the Mc, Moon and Wolfson based Lumin are to the left(warm) side so when it is all broken in together you may find that your ears are happy even if your desire to experiment is not satisfied. The D Series Lumin's do nothing wrong. They sound great and just work plus as a bonus you get Peter to work out any issues you have. Be careful of the "upgrade bug" just because you can as most times it doesn't work out the way you thought it would. Also be wary of people who rave about new gear the moment they get it because the average Audiophile doesn't want to admit he made a mistake especially if he bragged about a purchase before he received it and hooked it up. He may very well list it quietly on Audiogon and move on and if you bought based on his recommendation then you are stuck trying to sell it too.

Re: Lumin X1
Thanks again ! If I follow my past patterns, I will get this system to a particular point and never touch it again. These are the first upgrades that I've done in 15-20 years and I'm old enough now that they are probably the last .
There are some reasons why I need to switch my attention permanently away from audiophile pursuits in the next few weeks. I never planned on it being a hobby. If I try a new Streamer/DAC combo and it demonstrably sounds price proportionately "better" (and just as warm or warmer), I'll keep it and be done.My system:

Re: Lumin X1 Flagship Roon Ready Network Player
I took the Lumin X1 home about a week ago after the Lampizator GA started producing a buzz. I’ve been listening to the Lumin X1 at home and I have to say, it’s a really terrific network streamer. I’m using Ethernet (not fiber) and really enjoying. It really is a big step up from the S1. It’s sweeter on top with great separation and just as musical.

Re: Lumin X1
Just got an unexpected opportunity to loan an X1 as my dealer has become an Lumin dealer.......so today i was asking if it might be possible to get at loan on the X1 ( crazy as i am ) and his reply was , sure...
So went home listened a to some songs on my Lumin T1 , before making the change to the X1
And on with the songs.... waouu , that is really great in so many areas... did not expect that to be so much.
Better definition of soundstage as well as intrsuments and voices....bas is really good.
Now i already am considering how i can get this piece for me... likely not this year....maybe an upgrade over the S1 first !!
Has to say that the Lumin X1 to my knowledge has only a few hours on it at most...not sure how big a difference there will be with more hours on the unit.Flemming

only a few hours on it at most
For me, with my A1, the most gains were during the first 5 days.
It's definitely worth leaving it playing (with the amp volume off) 24/7 while you have it on loan.
Glad to hear that you are enjoying it![Associated with LUMIN]

Re: Lumin X1
I'm very curious to hear reports from actual users of the X1 after living with it for a while, particularly those who have upgraded from the A1.
I recently bought an A1 and am extremely impressed by its performance. It replaced a Chord DAVE/Blu 2 and I prefer the Lumin even though it is significantly cheaper and based on older (and simpler) DAC technology.
My dealer doesn't have a demo X1 to listen to but I am almost tempted to buy one just to satisfy my curiosity. The only thing stopping me is that I haven't particularly liked any of the Sabre based DACs that I have owned in the past over the long term, and the A1 sounds so good I am wary that the X1 will sound different but not necessarily better.

Re: Lumin X1
The DAVE/Blu 2 was initially impressive but over time I found I enjoyed it less. There is a slight dryness to the sound of the Chord DAC as well as a flatness to the soundstage. The A1 sounds more liquid, and has a more natural presentation of space. Surprisingly, I even thought it handled transients better than the DAVE/Blu 2. It also helps that I was able to reduce my box count from 5 (DAVE, Blu 2 and SOTM trifecta) to one and a bit (A1 and PSU).

Re: Lumin X1
The box count I understand and appreciate. But the DAVE’s claim to fame is its “3Dness”. So, that’s odd that you found it flat.
“In presenting Dave to a packed house, Watts then explained how he spent a considerable amount of time improving the noise shaper. With daily listening test conducted over a period of many months, Watts discovered how to increase Dave’s presentation of depth perception. (350db/48 bits).”
https://darko.audio/2015/05/chord-el...high-end-2015/
But glad you’re happy with the Lumin A1. Hey, I was the first to review it and I still love it. But the X1 is better IMO. I have one in the store for demo.

Re: Lumin X1
I kind of understand what Rob Watts means when he talks about depth perception and that 3D effect that people experience with the DAVE. The DAVE sounds bigger than the A1. The A1 sounds smaller and more compact by comparison. The images of the DAVE/Blu 2 are huge and full of detail, but it is like they are projected on to a giant screen. The image is big and has an illusion of depth, but ultimately when I listen to it, I see the flat screen, although I can understand how others see the big images.
If you weren't on the other side of the world, I would love to demo your X1!

Re: Lumin X1
Never mind....Factory reset on back and it seems to be good!
My new Lumin X1 arrived today. This is my 4th Lumin so it isn't unfamiliar. I have it connected to a Luxman L-509X via both XLR and RCA.
The Luxman is working fine via other devices going into the RCA on back but not when the X1 is connected. The X1 front display shows it is playing both from the Lumin App and from Roon as well as inside the apps themselves.
But I can't get any sound. I have power cycled all of it multiple times. I have looked over and over the X1 options. I can't see anything that might be amiss....but no sound.
Any thoughts......Peter.....anyone?

Re: Lumin X1
With X1 and T2, audio output needs to be chosen in the setup: analog, SPDIF or USB. As part of the QC process all output modes would be checked. Normally it would be reset back to analog before shipping, but this is complicated by the cached (delayed) nature of data saving. We have been taking steps to avoid this, and added the factory reset function in the Lumin app a few days ago.
Please create a playlist of different sample rates / PCM and DSD, play 7x24 in repeat mode for 2 weeks or more.
Note that connecting both XLR and RCA outputs will degrade the sound quality.Peter Lie

Re: Lumin X1
In my opinion, at least 400 hours. And because the X1 has a very high resolution and a very good stereophonic capability, you'll notice that everything you change / uprade is going to make a big impact on the soundstage, imaging and overall immersive experience: Cables, speaker position, tweaks and in my particular case: Tubes! Wow, so much difference from a tube to another. I bought the Westminster DC cord with the carbon fiber upgrade, but I think a good quality AC power cable has a bit more impact.
As an experimented Lumin user, you might know that a NAS provides speed and a better sound for local files playback.
Btw, the optical network connection is easy to set up and is a must: More soundstage, transparency and no fatigue at all. I highly recommend to use it as a bridge from your modem/router/optic switch electrical circuit to an independent electrical circuit dedicated to your Lumin and amp, avoiding any electric pollutants from the cable company or other devices such as a tv or a home teather receiver.
Enjoy!

Re: Lumin X1
i have a new X1 with the analog output going to a power amp. I need to use the USB output to drive a headphone amp with built-in DAC. I have the setup set for audio going to the analog output. Will the USB port produce the desired output (digital)? Will it be a fixed level?

Re: Lumin X1
If it's controlled by the volume control, that implies that there is only one active audio output at a time. Is that true? If it is I would have to go into settings and change it whenever I wanted to have the X1 support a different device. I was using the USB output port to drive Aurender Flow headphones from my Aurender N10 while being able to listen to music from my speakers at the same time. I didn't need to reconfigure anything.

Re: Lumin X1
Yes, in the Lumin app X1 options, you choose which output is active and only one is active at a time: analog, S/PDIF, or USB. Volume control affects all three outputs if you have enabled volume control.
Personally that works well for me because it lets me have multiple things hooked up at once but only have one output active, and to switch the active configuration from the Lumin app.Neko Audio

Re: Lumin X1
I turned the volume control off and I’ll use the volume control in my integrated amp. It has a remote and a headphone amp.
i suspect the reason Lumin limit the audio output is because everything goes through output transformers which probably can only deal with one device at a time.Bud<br>

Re: Lumin X1
That is true. For Lumin X1 and T2, only one output is active (analog, USB, or BNC-SPDIF) and needs to be chosen using Lumin app.
On our older products the analog and BNC-SPDIF were active at the same time, but this design causes confusion with raw DSD not output to SPDIF, DoP signal not output to analog, MQA full decoding not output to SPDIF, MQA core decoding not output to analog, etc.Peter Lie

Re: Lumin X1
I am considering going directly from the X1 to the input of the P.A.s through a high quality XLR I/O switch box that would allow the X1 to go to either the preamp or the poweramps and the power amps getting its inputs appropriately. What were your impressions of sound quality of the X1 with the volume control function engaged? I've heard that the sound quality changes but I am not sure how and I never did explore this possibility with my current S1.

Here's the latest review of the Lumin X1 from Stereo Magazine in Germany, where they award it a 100% in Sound Quality! The review begins on page 12.

Re: Lumin X1
I look forward to the review!
I just installed my X1 after updating my network infrastructure to a 10GbE fiber system with 1GbE SFPs on the Lumin. It fired up immediately, found an I.P. address and I've got a couple of hundred hours of music cued up to run even though the amplifier is currently off. I am expecting great things out of this machine and I think Lumin for providing the white gloves to treat the X1 with the respect it deserves.
One note of caution for those like me who are overly anxious to get the system installed: I inadvertently connected the male end of the power cable into the male power connector on the X1. NOT A GOOD THING! I only discovered my error when I tried to connect the female end of the power cable into the female connector on the power supply. Luckily no damage was done, no pins were bent, and I was able to make the appropriate connections and power up the system.
P.S. The footprint on the new power supply provided with the X1 is larger in width than the one on my S1 and I had to adjust things accordingly. Oh well..............
P.P.S. The review indicated that Lumin packed an SFP module in the box for making the optical connection. I did not receive an SFP module with mine. This may have been a courtesy to the reviewer however.

Re: Lumin X1
I have a question about the X1 and its power supply's physical positioning.
The horizontal space between the uprights in my rack were adequate to fit my old S1 and its power supply side by side. Not so with the X1 so I temporarily installed it onto the shelf above the X1. My question is twofold: Would it be okay "sonically" to install the X1's power supply on top of and in the middle of the X1? Most of me says "of course it would be okay" but then again who knows..... The second part of the question is are the feet on the X1's power supply "inert" and would not lead to depositing any sort of "gunk" onto the the brushed surface of the black X1 or otherwise lead to potential damage to the anodizing? I know, I know......... get a grip and don't go all OCD on us.

Re: Lumin X1
Thank you for the suggestion.
I will not stack them but am curious as to whether this is for sonic or other reasons? I remember seeing an X1 atop a Lumin Amp, probably on the Lumin website, and didn't know if that was an example of an operational setup or for the photo op only.
Also, and I am not sure if this is the most appropriate place to ask but I was watching network traffic over the fiber connection in and out of the X1 and it appeared that the network was idle for much of the time. It got me curious as to what really happens when you hit "play" on the Lumin iPad app. I may have the answer to this first question already: Is the entire playlist transferred to the X1's memory? Because I can shut down the iPad and music continues to happen I assume the play list is in the Lumin and it asks the server for more data when it needs it. Then I thought about how much music is being buffered into the X1 and can the X1 continue to play for a period of time if the network connection is severed, etc.
If the question is out of scope for the thread or would divulge commercially sensitive information no worries or if there is an article on the web I will try to find it in lieu of tying the forum up.

Re: Lumin X1
It is true that music playback continues even if the iPad is shut down - that's a design goal and has always been true since the introduction of the first Lumin at the end of 2012.
The (current) playlist metadata is relatively small and is inside the Lumin memory. So Lumin can ask the MinimServer on NAS to get the music data as needed without involving the iPad. The actual music content is adequately buffered in memory as well so you can have a short time of playback even if the network cable is disconnected, or a momentary interruption from internet streaming.Peter Lie

Re: Lumin X1
Thanks wklie!
Lumin seems to like MinimServer and has based a lot of its testing and development in large part on MinimServer. Also, QNAP has MinimServer built in which is an added bonus.
I have tried MinimServer and it works well but there is one aspect of it that is lacking and, therefore, have chosen JRiver MC instead. JRiver allows you to associate "tag" information to certain file types, WAV, etc., that MinimServer doesn't. Of course, MC is not entirely "clean" when paired with a Lumin but it is something I've learned to deal with.
Do you have any idea if MinimServer is looking into this a a potential future enhancement?
