How to measure voltage output of pre amp?
Hi Folks,
I have an Ayon S-10 streamer, dac, pre and I want to measure voltage output while playing various file types. Specifically, I want to measure various settings on the unit comparing redbook 16/44 files to DSD files.
Currently using SE RCA ICs as the output is 0db compared to XLR output which is +6db.
There is also a set of switches on the underside of the unit that can be set when using direct to amp mode and low output. One is 0 db and the other is -6db.
Why, because my DSD files are too loud and even at the lowest settings are still too loud, but not pcm. Usually for me it was the other way around on DSD.
Should I just unplug the IC from the amp and play various files while volt meter is hooked up. I would imagine positive would be hooked up to the IC and the ground to where?
Thanks for your help in advance.

Re: How to measure voltage output of pre amp?
never tried this measurement but, positive (+) volt-meter contact to the rca connector pin and negative (-) to the rca connector collar. be VERY careful to NOT let the two contacts touch, thereby, creating a short circuit.
if not already, you might check any playback software to see if there are any volume, eq. or other adjustments being made to one or the other formats which might be causing the playback difference.viking acoustics berlin r mk2 | almarro a318b + air tight atc-5 (phono) | clearaudio concept + virtuoso v2 MM | t+a dac8 dsd + diy transport + roon rock

Re: How to measure voltage output of pre amp?
The easiest method is to get a test CD that has pink noise track or 1kHz tone.
Then, install SPLnFFT app on an iPhone or iPad.
Simple and useful for a variety of audio system related stuff.
