This is a home run! I love this piece. Resolution, yet, smooth and analog sounding. Wonderful midrange bloom, sweet top end, great bass.

What I'd like to know is how its internal DAC sounds via the digital inputs, and what level of stand alone DAC would you compare it to? i.e. is the Luxman's internal DAC sound quality in the 'same league' as the PS Audio DSD, Lumin A1 or S1, Berkeley Reference Series 2, or any other points of reference? TIA!

Sweet. Smooth. Amazing separation. Instruments are placed in precise locations, with lots of air around them. 3D. Liquid, slightly bloom to the mids. Totally non-fatiguing.

    Thank you very much.

Do you know the Marantz SA7S1 CD player ? I search perhaps to change it...but I live in France. Price for the Luxman is near 15000 euros includes taxes.

I don't like listen music with USB DAC...I use it only in the plane with a cancel noise headphone.

Also look at the D-06u if only to be used as a disc player. About half the price and multiple rave reviews over the last couple of years.

It appears that the most you are likely to find even on the highest Luxman or Esoteric model disc players for DAC inputs are SPDIF and USB.

Since you like your current Marantz but are looking for an improvement, the newer Marantz SA-10 is reported to be a significant advance and would seem a logical candidate to consider. At least in the US at $7,000 retail it's less than half the price of the $15,000 Luxman D-08u. Hope this helps!

With AES and Clock, there are ESOTERIC GRANDIOSO ( 30000 Euros include taxes), and CEC TL2N ( 6000 euros) ...

The D-08u is so good, I’m keeping it at home and I just bought 35 new CD’s (I can’t remember the last time I bought CD’s!).

Audio.Bill nailed it with his original opinion of the D-08u:

Ha! Too funny. So to where are you feeding this signal to supply your Avantegarde speakers with this sound? Pray tell it wouldn't be through MSB...? Digitals only just started Mike!

It’s really improving. Just spinning CD’s, but will bring home an Aurender N10 to try the USB.

Would love to keep the MSB home, but it needs to be in the store for everyone to hear.

    Luxman D-08u

I’ve had the D-08u in my home system for over a week now and have been spinning discs nonstop. This piece in my system is truly transformational. This is, by far, the best CD/SACD Player I’ve ever had in my system at home. The synergy is just perfect. I swear, it sounds soooooo Analog. Meaty. Silky smooth. Not even an ounce of digititus. No edge or bite or hashy sounds - especially at high volumes and dynamic peeks. Smooth on top, even with what I know to be, sibilant recordings.

I’ve been spinning CD’s non-stop since I brought it home.

Not yet. I want to bring home an N10 to try it. It did make me buy 33 CD’s the other night (I haven’t bought a CD in months).

How close, in overall quality, does the Luxman get, with your best CD’s and Sacd’s, compared to your primary vinyl front end (the Kronos I presume) .......is it reasonably close to your analogue front end?

    Re: Luxman D-08u

Alright, it's time for me to fess up. As an analog source devotee I find it difficult to admit that when I first heard the Luxman D-08u at AXPONA I was completely fooled into thinking I was hearing a top shelf analog front end. When I entered the room I saw an esoteric high end turntable setup with a record spinning and assumed that's what I was listening to. The sound quality was truly exceptional and excelled at what I love about analog playback, with a captivating sense of space and natural harmonic decay. After listening for a while I approached the turntable and was shocked to see that the arm was actually lifted over the spinning record and it was the Luxman disc player that we were listening to. I asked about the disc being played assuming it was likely some special audiophile SACD and was further shocked when I was told it was just a normal well recorded CD. Rarely have I been similarly fooled by CD playback approaching the sound of a fine analog source but the D-08u certainly did it!

    Mike,
High praise indeed. How does it compare to a similarly priced Esoteric player?
    Thanks,

The Luxman is not feature rich like the others. It doesn’t have a plethora of filters, digital outputs and external clocking options. It does not have a completely separate section for analog and digital, requiring a power cord for each. Aesthetically, it’s sexy in its simplicity of design. Build quality is excellent, but certainly not “Tank Like”, like the T+A.

But what it does, it does sooooo well. It transforms CD and SACD listening into a difference experience. It also offers USB for anyone wanting to add an Aurender, etc. I’ll be honest, I almost never bought it. The Luxman USA rep kept telling me about this piece. I kept thinking, “Christ man, what the hell do I need with another CD player?” He kept saying, “this is my favorite piece that we make, it might just be the best piece we make. Mike, you really need one. Mike, this thing sounds so analog, you won’t believe it.” Of course, my thought was “sure, sure, heard that all before.” But then I googled the piece and found the write up from audio.bill on the D-08u. I thought, well, maybe there is something to it after all. So Bill, it’s all your fault (in a good way). Thank you Bill. You got a good set of ears on you man!

Back to the D-08u....The transport mechanism is entirely built by Luxman and they do not OEM it. Luxman spent an inordinate amount of time on the analog output stage. The Luxman engineers felt that this is where they could make huge strides in getting that magic sound. So yes, it sounds VERY analog because of the analog output stage. Makes sense to me.

I have not done a head to head shootout, but I know what I hear when I bring a piece home. My home system is very revealing and I know it well after so many years. Perhaps if I had another system, I would prefer something else in my system.

I think all of these things are so system dependent. For example, I think I actually prefer the T+A MP3100HV with filter 3 in the Magico M3 system. But again, I haven’t done a head to head.

As a side note, Luxman corporate is handling their own distribution now, lowered prices and have a different go to market strategy. Ditto for T+A. A trend I’m seeing in the industry.

And for those wondering, no, sadly, the Luxman D-08u doesn’t get even remotely close to the MSB Select II DAC I had in my home system for a few weeks. The Select II, as I said, requires its own source category. But the D-08u at $14,995, makes a compelling argument as a true “analog sounding” digital hub for any home system.

Thanks for taking the time to share all of that Mike. I ONLY do CD/SACD/HDCD/DVD-A/Bluray (I know I am in the minority) so am always appreciative of opinions/reviews on these players. Might just have to buy the LUX and the T+A eventually and enjoy the best that each one has to offer.

Mike, I take my hat off to you, at least you have compared & voiced a comparison to a component that even though not cheap, can be a great addition to a system in the digital realm where vinyl is not necessarily the last word.

    Re: Luxman D-08u

Thank you for the detailed sharing.
I am planning to purchase D-08u and a matching Luxman amp to go with my Marten Django L. I am still to decide between L-509x (which I haven't listened to, as local dealer is still waiting for it) and l-590ax II which performed wonderfully with my speakers in the showroom.
I am not a native English speaker and maybe I am missing something but I would be very much interested into a comparison between playing discs and USB input of the D-08u. I will be using an Aurender to stream files (currently own n100h and will be upgraded to N10).

Hey Mike - Have you had a chance to listen to the D-08u via its digital inputs sourced by the Aurender N10? It should be very interesting to see if its internal DAC performs at the same high level while maintaining the 'analog ease' that it exhibits with disc playback. I realize that you're a busy guy with a lot of gear on your plate to evaluate, but wanted to check if any progress has been made on this front. TIA!

I did Bill. I tried the Aurender N10 and the D-08u maintained that great analog sound through its USB input.

I do not want to abuse of your time but some more on the comparison between spinning discs and USB (or other digital inputs) on the D-08u would be great. Aside from analogue character of reproduction, I would love to hear more on detail (usually some detail gets lost when using a digital input or is perceived as such), stage and focus. Also, my main concern when using USB, is the perceived loss of coherence (at least, this was my experience with another producers CD/USB-DAC combo).

Of course, I could just wait until I will run the test myself, but my home demo is scheduled sometime in May..... only 31/2 months to go.

Well, I’m not sure how much I can add. I’ve done a lot of testing (pics below). The D-08u is a champ. I found it smoother, more analog than the Lampi Big 7. I know I’ll catch some sh!t for that, but that’s what I found.

I’m using the Shunyata Sigma XLR and USB and it’s just delicious sounding. The USB pulling from the NAS is as good as the transport.

    Thanks Mike,

It will be a veeeery long wait.
Still have to decide between 590ax II and 509x as well as between DA-06 (dac only) and the D-08u beast. For now, I just have to find the patience to wait for the new toys.

It seems that you have some strange biases regarding the use of CD transports vs digital file reproduction.

If I am not mistaken, we are compatriots. T+A is present in Bucharest, same dealer that carries Triangle, Luxman, Accuphase, etc.

I'm afraid this is not the case... The closest T+A distributor is Audiophyl Kft. from Budapest, Hungary (according to the official T+A site) and not HiFi Expert.

That's not the current Luxman D-80u, but rather a closeout deal on the previous D-08 model. Still a good deal on a solid player, but it doesn't sound the same as the D-08u!

    Re: Luxman D-08u

I just purchased a Luxman M800a, my dream amp. I already own an Esoteric
K-03x Anniversary Edition in Black, one of 5 in the US, and someone within 10 miles of me is selling D-08u. Talking to Bob Harley of TAS and he thought it would be more of a sideways trade if that. But man, I love Luxman gear. If anyone has heard the two, I’d love to hear your thoughts? Please advise, thanks.

The Luxman is more analog sounding. I think it’s a nice step up over the Esoteric.
